Mid 90s, marking Hill's directorial debut, dives deep into the culture of skateboarding, showcasing not only the physical escapades associated with the sport but also the emotional distress that comes with young relationships. The story follows Stevie, played impeccably by Sunny Suljic, following his navigation through family turmoil and finding his place as a young boy. Jonah Hill's direction is subtle and effective, with beautiful cinematography captured completely by 16mm film. The gritty quality complements the period perfectly and is only enhanced musically by 90s hip-hop and punk rock. The dialogue is exactly what it needs to be, using distinctive slang without feeling too forced. The interactions built by Hill are filled with humor and heartache authentically executed by the cast. Hill's first attempt can be written as a success in how well-orchestrated all pieces of this movie are. Rating: 8.0

I think I can speak for a large sum of people in saying when you see a cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie, you understand it's going to be great. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is a Quentin Tarantino masterpiece with a riveting plot and script. A fictional story using 1960s real events, the film follows Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff (Pitt) in their chase to return to Hollywood Glory. The duo of these Mount Rushmore quality actors creates a buddy movie vibe surrounding a gripping tale. The balance of comedy and drama is perfectly weighed by Tarantino's genius. If you are going to watch this movie, it is more than one you can just throw on in the background. Full attention is recommended to capture all aspects being jumbled together. Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate delves into another level of Hollywood fame, while also covering the development of Charles Manson's plan. Tarantino's famous gory scenes make another appearance as an element of this exhilarating story. If you have the time during the day, it is definitely worth the watch. Rating: 8.4/10

Leave the World Behind is eerily fantastic. Dystopian, end-of-the-world films do not fall under my favorite films to watch, but the reality and uncomfortable truth of this movie grabbed my attention. When I started it (without looking at the description) it seemed like a nice movie where a sweet family goes on vacation. Once a specific boat scene occurred, I knew I was not in for the ride I expected. Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke do well together to create a serious tone around the events that happen while slipping in comedic moments we all think we would do at the end of the world. There is no right way to deal with the events that happened in this movie, and they prove exactly this in the insanity that takes place. Mahershala Ali and Myha'la contain a mysterious energy I could not stand throughout the film (I mean it was too good). With every sentence they spoke, I could not tell if they were meant to be genuinely good people or if they were serial killers in hiding. Bizarre twists in conflict keep you on your toes for the entire film, leaving you afterward thinking "Maybe I should install a bunker at my house". Rating: 8.1

I took a step back from watching Whiplash and could say aloud, "Woah". From start to finish, you are hooked to this story praying for the success of a young drummer in a cut-throat music scene. Miles Teller delivers a unanimously compelling performance in his role as this drummer. His intensity paired with a sincere, youthful chase for success resonated with me deeply in the position I am in. I often look at this story for inspiration in the dedication it takes to become great at what you love. J.K. Simmons hangs among the all-time greats in his versatility and genuine nature as someone who loves film. He seems to understand his way around a scene and script like no other person in the industry. His passion and attention to detail place him in the top tier of acting talent. The dynamic between the two is impeccably crafted to display how iron sharpens iron, or how when the best goes against the best, it only benefits them both. I love this film not only as a reviewer but personally. Rating: 8.8

When searching for a film for movie night, you may stumble upon a combination you've never imagined before. Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel were not what I expected to be watching, but I was so happy I did. End of the Tour depicts the story of David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel) right after the release of his acclaimed novel Infinite Jest; David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) follows him across the country for a book tour of turning events. Yet another story that you don't consider until watching, the duo captures so much emotion in their storytelling. It is interesting to see the dynamic between the two actors as I found they complement each other quite well. Jason Segel is entertaining no matter what role he is in, but this time he finds a balance of honest distress and pulls the emotions from the audience. The scenes of blanketing snow accompanied by the duo and Wallace's dog stick in my mind as the embodiment of what this film is. A beautiful story in something seemingly uninteresting at first glance. Some stories, you never wonder about until you see them on the big screen. I found Air to be one of those movies. A killer cast of Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Viola Davis, and many more found a way to make what seems to be a dull business move into something the audience can be invested in. Viola Davis is undeniably excellent in the role of Deloris Jordan, displaying the passion a mother can have for her children and the strength required to be a figure like she was. The dynamic between Damon, Affleck, and Jason Bateman proved to be both comedic and powerful in a story to don't expect to be told. I like the creative twist Damon and Affleck put on such a behind-the-scenes transaction. The film did seem to rush in its storytelling which made me pull my attention away in moments (I do understand it must be difficult to write a script about this story). The duality of this film can classify it as a movie night essential or a background noise ambiance, depending on what the viewer wishes. I enjoyed the ride this took me on, and I for one would watch it again. Rating: 6.5/10

If there was ever a movie to make you feel like a main character by association, it's Cool Hand Luke. Paul Newman unbelievably epitomizes this role. Before watching, I had a preconceived bias that this film was just another oldie people used to rave about. Upon watching it, I was willing to be locked up in jail down south just to be a sliver of how cool Luke was. The film was entertaining the entire time with no lulls in the story. Obviously one of the most recognized parts was the egg-eating contest, which remains a highlight of my watching experience. Dragline (George Kennedy) has a heartwarming arch from the initial impression of Luke. While I love Luke's character, Dragline is an enjoyable feature of the film, bringing another level of emotion to the plot. Rating: 7.9

Wes Anderson competes, in my mind, as a top director and creative mind. The cinematography, quick-witted scripts, and attention to detail contribute to an orchestrated masterpiece that is Moonrise Kingdom. While a star-studded cast propels this movie as an all-time great in my eyes, I think the way characters are cued to speak, their tone, and their depth carries my mind into Anderson's fascinating world. His emphasis on the conflict surrounding young, fragile love paired with seemingly familiar New England settings creates a fairytale-like movie. I personally loved watching Bruce Willis in the role he was cast in because of the ability it showcased he has. Each character was so carefully crafted to fit in the story and done perfectly. An underrated classic. Rating: 8.8

Dead Poets Society should be a movie you plan a night around. It is a truly comforting, heartbreaking, and insightful film about youth and "carpe diem". Robin Williams' performance is enshrined to me as an example of what acting means to this world. It can make us feel seen and heard in ways we haven't thought. The wonderful cast in tandem with a beautiful script combines for a film that will tear your heart out. In some way, they make you feel like a part of their group, hiding away in a cave, truly expressing what it is you have to say. It may seem naive to say these things about a film, but this film gives the audience their own unique takeaway of what they saw. What I may write down in this blog may be completely different as to how you may perceive it, which is so important to discourse between different ideas. I truly love this movie and wish I could watch it for the first time again. Rating: 8.9/10

Summer is in the air. Baseball games, barbecues, and late-night rides seem to happen every day. Arguably my favorite movie of all time, Dazed and Confused will get you ready for a carefree season of sunshine and good times. While the plot doesn't have a major conflict, I think this is what makes it so attractive as a film. The audience is brought along the journey of these young kids making dumb decisions, immersing them in the story. In a time where there may be so much worry and stress surrounding our lives, it is nice to have a comfortable movie that entertains you the entire time. The casting for this film is undeniably iconic with scenes that stick with you months after watching the movie. Since the first time I watched this movie, I haven't stopped saying "Watch the leather, man" every time I get into my car. This movie is not revolutionary. It does not reinvent the wheel. What it does, though, is capture exactly what it means to be young and dumb. It transports its viewers to a time when things were a little more simple. And in the end, it reminds us to just keep livin', L-I-V-I-N. Rating: 9.3/10
