“In 1965, Bob Dylan and I were discussing the state of the music scene. He said The Byrds, who had made a hit of “Mr. Tambourine Man,” were the only thing happening musically at that point in time. Perhaps an exaggeration, but certainly a tribute to the stellar musicians who formed the budding monster groups of the years to come like The Byrds and CSNY.
David Crosby was among the monster group icons who continued a solo career with the kind of success reserved for great musicians. And he could sing the hell out of a harmony.
He was also a friend to me. He was always, I repeat, always present for me, to defend my character and politics, and often included over the top (sometimes unwarranted) praise. He was funny, clever, and refreshing to be around. And I was honored that he chose my portrait of him as his last album cover.
He will be missed by millions, including myself. Sending my love to Jan and his family.”—Joan Baez

Nooo i just saw a TikTok of someone calling their mom a hoarder cause she has a CD collection and going "i can play these faster on an app" and telling her to throw them away BITE BITE BITE BITE KILL KILL KILL KILL if someone said that to me i would rip them apart with my teeth i would burn them alive the violence that would take place would be unimaginable i would be an unleashed demon hungry for blood and meat. unimaginable horrors. death and destruction. killing. maiming. no one could survive that. it would be a nuclear apocalypse. leave the fucking CDs alone
The Tori Amos piano grinding discourse is literally the most sexist thing ever. No one asks mick jagger, Elvis, Robert plant… if they ejaculate while moving their hips on stage? tori is just doing the female version of male rock tradition, but people are so patronizing and gross about it…plus she said it helps her sing better. I find it weird that male music journalists insist on not thinking about this perspective. The press objectified tori Amos much, but when she expressed what it was really like in her body (TMJ, difficulties from world tours…), they just did not care.
Tori's record label listed one of her strengths as "sexual magnetism," but I don't think they understood why or to who. She's singing songs like "Crucify" and "Past the Mission" - really vulnerable and heart-wrenching songs… so that complexities any simplistic idea of some kind of ingenue. it's empowering as a woman to see someone sing vulnerable songs while being so free in their body, just really embodied when society tells women to tamp themselves down and resist being "too much."
i absolutely love anaïs mitchell and jefferson hamer’s rendition of tam lin but uh
if there were “four and twenty ladies fair” and ALSO “four and twenty gentlemen” in whatever scottish palace hall or wherever this was going down. there were at LEAST 48 bystanders watching janet’s dad try to awkwardly broach the subject like “hey….. my darling daughter……… you seem to be…… preggers” and janet loudly answering “yeah and the dude was a proper ride not like your 24 entirely unfuckable mates" LIKE….. WHAT?
This was an impromptu song played a handful of times in 1999. This particular version was played on March 10 1999 at Cow Palace in California.
Bless me father
I have sinned
I haven’t sold out
I just bought in
Didn’t know what I did wrong
And then one day I heard that song
Bless me father I have sinned
I bought into the corporate experience
Bless me father I’m fuckin’ dead
I’m going to hell now and I will wait
Bless me father I have sinned
I didn’t sell out, I just bought in
And I know not what I’ve done
Bless me father I was once young
Hear me white, hear me black
Hear me scream cause I can’t go back
Hey you know what?
Ani DiFranco, is right.
