What is sterling silver?
When we talk about sterling silver, we talk about silver that is not pure in jewelry, cutlery, and accessories. It is an alloy with metals such as copper that ensures the durability and resistance of the pieces. The first silver alloys made in Europe were in the 12th century in Germany and were used for commerce.
New material was not created as such; in the case of bronze, what was made was a new silver, which followed the official standards, adding a small part of another metal to the base that gave it the desired consistency. Suppose we go to percentage, 92.5% silver, and 7.5% copper. Germanium, zinc, and platinum are also sometimes used.

It is one of the reasons why silver jewelry we find on the market lasts so long and the main reason why some maintenance is needed. The properties that other metals provide, beyond their hardness, may cause a gradual disappearance of the natural shine and some oxidation so that it is almost necessary to give it a luster.
In its history, we have been able to find various proportions of metals, about the twelfth century in England. However, almost certainly, they come from much earlier, so there are several sterling silver, depending on the guidelines that each one follows.
We should know that the one that has become a standard is the one that takes its name from a derivation of Old English and some small coins, minted in silver and that have a star printed on each side.
When it comes to sterling silver, the most common is to find an inscription made by the master jeweler where the number 925, the letter that, a double that, or the word sterling can be seen.
This guarantee can be found by looking at the inside of the object when it is a ring or on some inconspicuous side if it is a necklace, or on the back if it is a bracelet or earrings. We hope it has been clear to you.
