Leap of Fear…….. "Just Kidding!"
Still remember the day somewhere Jun’15, sitting in a “Nitro Ride” at the Imagica with my brother, we are discussing who is more fearful me or him?” Who can let it go? Who can take Leap of Fear? Yes, Leap of Fear that’s what we named Bungee Jumping… With no reference points for my bungee jump: perhaps the only experience i had of jumping off was from small trees as a kid. We reached our final destination of Bungee Jump– the mystic Rishikesh, the highest point in India 83 meters (272.ft) during Oct’15. Here we are ready to check who can let it go? And who can take leap of Fear? Luckily for me, i got chance to wear my new Superman t-shirt which seemed to be best while flying off!!! You think I’m nuts? Yeah, me too. And then the conversation with my brain starts: My brain – what if I don’t Jump wearing Superman t-shirt???? Me – hmmmm… maybe there is a possibility…. My brain – Wear simple tshirt…. After all it’s a Leap of Fear not Faith.. Me – I agree… Yep, you guessed it right, changed myself into simple t-shirt. My brother laughed at my t-shirt confusion. Anyways, we reached the point of our Bungee Jump… and when I saw the Jumping point, suddenly I started humming the famous song.. “This is it, Here I stand…. I'm the light of the world….I'll feel grand” by Michael Jackson. And I stopped talking to myself the feeling of fear before the jump began to disappear. Rarely did I lose control over myself; I avoid things which can make me lose my control. So after checking in, signing my life away, getting suited up and harnessed up ready to lose control, I then sat and waited for my time to jump. My bungee Jumper Matt from New Zealand, summed his long bungee Jumping career beautifully – “Rajni, I have lost count of how many times I have jumped, but let me tell you, the experience today you will have, you can never repeat this next time. Because next time when you jump you will exactly know how you are going feel. So relax, empty you mind, and Just take a Leap of Faith…………….” It was terrifying standing at the edge of the cage, leaning out, seeing down and here it goes, me and my brain started again….. My brain - its “Leap of Fear” and not “Leap of Faith” Me – Matt, looks happy and confidant after so many Jumps My brain – You don’t know Matt to decide and take leap of Faith; which is actually a Leap of Fear Me - " It's OK, I've got this bungee cord . We'll be ok." My brain – “I don't see a bungee cord. I see a huge fall" Me – 3-2—1… Bungeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee My Brain – Shuts Down… Matt shouts "3---2---1--bungee!", and I let go. Standing there was the worst part. As my body sensed me fall, I silently wailed and swung my arms/legs in a pathetic attempt to grab something. My body also entered a state of shock for a split second. As the fall continued I felt free from any physical connection to the world. Almost detached from reality. I was surprised by this and, laughing,: “this ain’t so bad!”. As I fell, no thought of the bungee rope snapping or the ground racing towards me was a concern. The moment I surrendered myself to the feeling of fear and letting go for trying to control the situation I felt a feeling of absolute peace. There were no thoughts in my mind, just the experience of what is happening. At that moment, my survival became less important than my enjoyment of the experience, on some level I realise I’m not pumped full of adrenaline in the way I’d expected, but happily calm. At the end of the jump I met and high-fived the guy who helped me out of my harnesses and they hand over to me my badge – “I have got the Guts” As soon as I saw my brother who had leapt before me. We shared our experience and hugged and were both beaming with awesome energy. And my brother says “Sis, you did let it go… and you have a lot of guts”. Five Strategies for Overcoming Fear: 1.) Leap of faith - If your life feels like it’s stuck then one of the best things you can do is to challenge something that scares you and take a leap. 2.) Be Mindful - All fear exists in the future. Keeping the focus in the present moment is an effective way to keep you in control 3.) Past Experiences - When you face fear you’ll create a reference point of how you handled yourself in past. 4.) The Split Second Game - The moment you face your fear, you move through a split second of uncertainty and into a point of self-understanding. 5.) Positive Outlook - If you live in fear, you’ll spend a life quietly dying. When you face fear the only parts of you that’ll die from the experience are the parts that you no longer needed because you have outgrown them.
