A trans man has been reported missing in New Jersey, USA. His name is Elliot Ganiel (though he was initially misgendered & deadnamed by police and the news). He is a 32-year-old White trans man, 4-foot-4, 140 pounds, with brown hair and eyes. He has been missing since February 28th, 2024. His car and belongings were found at Mullica River Canoe Landing within Wharton State Forest.

Anyone who has any information on Elliot should contact Detective Matthew Locotos at 609-641-3122 or the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection hotline at 1-877-927-6337.

Big survey shows that 94% of transgender Americans who have transitioned are happy with their choice

The National Center for Transgender Equality in the US published the results of a survey of 92,329 transgender Americans.

The survey shows that trans people who come out and start presenting and living as their true selves experience a vast improvement in their quality of life.

On transitioning

The U.S. Transgender Survey (USTS) reports:

Nearly all respondents (94%) who lived at least some of the time in a different gender than the one they were assigned at birth (“gender transition”) reported that they were either “a lot more satisfied” (79%) or “a little more satisfied” (15%) with their life. Three percent (3%) reported that transitioning gender made them “neither more nor less satisfied” with their life, 1% were “a little less satisfied”, and 2% were “a lot less satisfied” with their life.

The claim that a lot of trans people regret transitioning is clearly a lie.

On hormone treatment

Nearly all respondents (98%) receiving hormone treatment reported that this treatment made them either “a lot more satisfied” (84%) or “a little more satisfied” (14%) with their life.

On surgery

The similar numbers for gender-affirming surgery was 88% for "a lot more satisfied" or 9% for "a little more satisfied". Only 2 percent was some shade of "less satisfied".

On identity

Of the 84,170 adult respondents, 38% identified as nonbinary, 35% as transgender women, 25% as transgender men and 2% as crossdressers.

"Crossdresser" as a cultural category is clearly been replaced by terms like nonbinary and people coming out as trans.

Support from families

We are glad to see that the support trans people get from their families is getting better, although not as good as we could have hoped.

36% of adult respondents who said that some or all of their immediate family knew that they were transgender reported their family members were “supportive” of them being transgender, and 31% said they were “very supportive.”

Among 16- and 17-year-old respondents, 27% said their family members were “supportive”, and 17% “very supportive.” 

Young people (16-17) are facing the hardest resistance, with 29% reporting unsupportive family members. There is probably a selection bias here, as more of the older trans people who have transitioned have done so because they have gotten support from their families. Many continue to live in the closet out of fear of losing their loved ones. Older trans people are also more likely to have chosen important family members, like their partners, avoiding transphobes in the process.

"abinary people can be gay, lesbian, veldian & straight" & "orientations that are explicitly inclusive of abinary people need more visibility and to be taken more seriously" are two statements that can and should coexist.

i see way too much "abinary people can be lesbian etc." and not nearly enough people lifting up orientations that are more explicit in our genders or in people's attraction to us. tbh, this is true for midbinary genders too. there's way more "nonbinary people can use [orientation with binary connotations]" and not enough "look at these orientations that honour us".

trixic, toric, enbian and other mestric labels for specific genders deserve as much love as lesbian, sapphic, gay, achillean, veldian.

not to forget there are many people who are both! for some people, "gay" just doesn't tell the full story and they might identify as a toric gay specifically.

all abinary experiences of orientation deserve visibility.

Speaking of Bad Takes Havers and Stupid Arguments, scrolled by one that was effectively "trans guys who talk about transandrophobia should instead practice posting pictures of older passing trans men but they won't because of their fantasies of never passing"

And like. First of all. I do that. I've posted multiple older, passing trans men. I talk about my trans guy friends who pass perfectly all the time? I pass like 80-90% of the time nowadays?

But I also know trans men- binary trans men who are absolutely putting in the effort to pass as binary cis men- who do not pass and have been on T for significantly longer than I have been. I've been on T for a year and a half and I pass fairly well nowadays. I have a friend who has been on T for over 10 years who does not. I had more beard and more growth and more masculine features and frame pre-T than he does 10 years on T, post-op, medically transitioning far younger than me. That's... honestly one of the points? Not everyone is so lucky.

And not everyone desires my outcome, and it's *weird* seeing this argument over and over because honestly it just sounds like transmedicalism. The only valid trans guys are the ones that are binary male and pass perfectly for cis and have been on T for years and have done every single surgery possible. Sorry but that's not a lot of people's realities, and it's just plain not feasible for many people either. We're just going to leave these people behind because their journey doesn't match ours??? Really???

It's so bizarre to see someone constantly going "skill issue" when faced with someone else who does not pass. Some people are never going to pass. It doesn't make them any less trans or any less of whatever gender they say they are. How can you call yourself part of the trans community when you're spitting on people less fortunate or with different priorities than you?
