Virtual Sketchbook #4 Abstract/Nonrepresentational Painting
Tumblr media
This painting  was inspired by my earlier childhood when my grandpa and I would go to this place we called Peter Pan island which was a small beach hidden behind the woods. The process of this was that I started off my drawing a little girl crouched in the water, with her hands in a moving action of playing in it. Besides her is her grandfather, or any male figure wading in the water, I only included the waist and down for him because the main focus is the little girl. Behind them is the rest of the ocean and the sunset. Once that was completely I quickly put in the colors with Oil paints and then used my hands to smear it all around to create that abstract look.

Virtual Sketchbook #4 Pollock
" How did Jackson Pollock go from studying with Thomas Hart Benton and using abstract imagery in his paintings to removing all imagery in his famous “drip” paintings?"
I believe that Pollock was overpowered by his use of drinking. Pollock became an alcoholic after Benton left to further his art career which begun his interest in abstract art thus, since Pollock lacked the discipline and skill to create figurative murals like Benton, he in rage, slung paint on canvas creating a swirling action, etc. He wanted to create great and heroic paintings for America in a way he knew he was capable of; “A method of a painting is a natural growth out of a need, I want to express my feelings rather than illustrate them.” Moving away from home, Pollock tried to quit drinking which was successful for about 2-3 years where its stated he had his biggest impression on many and the work he created was spectacular, ““People that saw Pollock work state that when he was making a painting, he entered a kind of trance. He put the canvas down on the floor, and then he would encircle it, like a kind of shaman’s dance, spattering, flinging, spilling, dribbling, and dripping, completely oblivious to those watching, completely oblivious to the outside world.” With Pollock now sober and able to self-regulate, I think he was able to unlock his inner self, his inner talents. When he created art, he wasn’t just making it but he was in it, apart of the process. After those years of being sober, he broke, and therefore art like that wasn’t the same anymore. It was said he was fighting to be free, to find his own dissonant voice, and for a moment he did.

Virtual Sketchbook #3 Visual Analysis
Tumblr media
Title: Bust of a Woman
Date: 1875
Artist: Federico Gaetano Villa
Media: Marble Sculpture
Federico Villa was well known for his large sculptures and portrait busts, although this specific bust has no identification that I can find. As I was walking around the Ringling Museum, this creation caught my eye due to its extremely white and smooth look. Not only does this bust remind me of a Greek goddess, the overall detail and look to the woman is just astonishing. Villa uses marble to carve this portrait using tools to create texture, smooth skin, and other smaller details. If you look closely, you can see he even included the folds in the woman’s clothes and the faint flowers designed on her outfit. Villa presented this bust in two different places such as the Philadelphia Centennial in 1876 and the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878 to which many that perceived materialistic value sat as audiences. If I were to describe the piece, I would say that it has a noticeable composition, with the woman’s head being slightly tilted, Villa included a tilt in her shoulders as well to bring a sort of movement and life to the sculpture. Each feature has its own unique texture such as her hair which involves an impressive number of ridges and lines to give it that curly look; the ruffles on her dress, the folds in her overtop, and the slight ridges in her skin. Another detail I noticed is the fine lines to create hair in her eyebrows and the way the light reflects off her features. The woman’s expression gives me a feeling of authority, that she holds power, hardheaded and admired by others for her confidence and beauty. As a woman, this sculpture gives me a sort of confidence and had me thinking of how beautiful all our difference features are and to always be yourself, to never change for anyone and to always be strong. Overall, when walking around the room, this was the piece that shined amongst the others with its rich and powerful look.

Virtual Sketchbook #2 Writing and Looking
Tumblr media
I chose Winslow Homer's "Boys Wading" Fig 7.2 on page 4 as my painting. Homer uses watercolor to create this piece, gouache for detail, highlights, eye catching colors, opacity, different brush strokes such as horizontal, and a focal point.

Virtual Sketchbook #2 Still Life
Tumblr media
What it is: This is an arrangement of flowers and colors that were then exploded.
Why I included this: I found this to be a very beautiful image from the colors, to the way the flower petals arrange themselves in a time of such destruction.
What is the message: Marcel Christ was inspired by his chemical engineering studies. He wanted to push boundaries of special effects and photographic techniques, so therefore he gave life to inanimate objects by sharing only the commonality of unpredictability and surprise.

Who: Brittany Hollis taken by Jeff Tse
What it tells about the person: I believe the eye catching colors on this model give her a creative personality. That fashion and art can be made out of anything and can even go against society's norms. Creativity has no limits.
