Privacy and Data Ownership

This week’s topic really opened my eyes to the terms that we unknowingly agree on when being online users. It mind-boggles me to know how simple it is for us to overlook the terms of service agreements that are required when signing up for platforms online. I took the initiative to look over Tumblr’s TOS prior to signing up and I was surprised (in a good way) to see that this platform respects content created by users and allows us to maintain ownership of the content we create. Sadly, this is unlikely with other platforms which is why it’s extremely important to understand what it is that we are agreeing to when signing up. Many times, users do not get to keep ownership of their content, and even upon deletion of accounts the content stays online and is still owned by that platform. We must create a better culture of being aware of TOS.
