Unfounded rumors on social media spread panic of shooter at Brighton High School
A major downside in social media would have to be bullying, rumors and worst of all the now spread of panic for a shooter at a high school. A student who does not go to Brighton High School posted a video of a gun commonly used for paintballing on Snapchat. The video traveled around social media and a threat that warned people to get out of Brighton High School was eventually added to the post, said Canyons School District spokesman Jeff Haney. Rumors that an active shooter was on campus flew among students at Brighton and nearby schools. Administrators at Brighton also began receiving calls from worried parents and students, Haney said. "We understand their concern in this day when things are happening across the country. There are many people who will panic when they hear of something that could happen at their school," Haney explained. "We want to be clear that there has been no threat against our school or any of our students." Police contacted the parents of the student who posted the original video and verified that he has no access to weapons and was at home at the time the video circulated, Haney said. Word on social media travels faster than any other words – that’s where social media has some good and mostly bad. Nothing good comes from rumors because they just grow in size. Although this situation was handled correctly because once it was noted that a student had a paintball gun and reported it to authorities to fix this problem. Negligence plays a big role as well but at least they will learn for next time – watch out for problematic students.

https://www.nbcnews.com/better/video/how-to-become-a-social-media-influencer-in-2018-1385038403770
How to become a social media influencer in 2018
In 2018 – the social media influencers are growing in numbers – more companies look to them to promote their business or products due to the number of followers they have. Influencer marketing has become one of the most effective channels to reach modern day consumers, whose interest and attention has become increasingly harder to capture. Interestingly, word-of-mouth is now perceived as one of the most effective advertising methods, as customers often prefer to research a brand on their own and only rely on feedback or recommendations from someone they trust. The impact of influencers on marketing campaigns continues to increase. They’re perceived as thought leaders, experts in their field, the most effective partners for sharing your brand’s messages and driving business your way. “Find your niche. Something you’re really interested in and you’re able to tell people something new, fresh and/or extraordinary. Be an expert here. Now pick two, three, or four (maximum) social media channels that you’ll cover. Are you good with videos or are you more written content-oriented? Think about the type of content you want and are able to create and publish. More Facebook (various of types of media)? Instagram (mainly pictures)? or YouTube (the most challenging but most promising if you feel you’re good at it)? Create a content strategy. What are your constant information priorities? Why will people be eager to follow you? It must have a value. Once you have a plan for two or three months out, prepare it and start publishing!”

https://www.digitaltrends.com/social-media/facebook-collections-share/
You can now share saved Facebook posts with a Pinterest – like collection tool
Having done my presentation on Pinterest I found this article to be very interesting in finding out that Facebook is once again piggybacking off of another social media site. Although, the update doesn’t currently allow for publicly sharing the collection with every follower but allows the user to select which Facebook users to share the list with. Those selected users also become contributors to the collection, which means along with seeing what you’ve already saved, they can add their own posts to the list as well. Collections that don’t have a contributor will remain under Facebook’s “only me” privacy setting. The article also states; Like the original option to save and organize Facebook posts, the update feels very Pinterest-like. While Facebook isn’t trying to share saved ideas with all your followers, Pinterest has long allowed users to create shared boards for collaborating with friends. While one new feature isn’t going to replace Pinterest’s multitude of search, sharing and privacy options, the update could help Facebook users share multiple ideas they spot on their news feed with a small group of people. These options will be available in the incoming future – we will see how this one plays out with Facebook Fans.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/ryanholmes/2018/10/29/are-facebook-groups-the-future-of-social-media-or-a-dead-end/
Are Facebook Groups the future of Social Media (or a dead end)?
I personally hate Facebook Groups – I believe I am one of the few people to be in no Facebook groups. Other than the occasional baby shower or birthday party which ends and closes out after the event completes – they have no use for me. As for some other people – they rely on Facebook Groups. Having someone to be there to post new content and keep you updated on new and exciting products is good – people also love to use Facebooks Groups and Forums to talk about the numerous problems they have with the company and get some sort of feedback. In this article it presents; “The Facebook Group is nothing new. Spaces for like-minded people to congregate and discuss specific subjects — from hobbies to pets and celebrities — date in one form or another to the platform’s earliest days. But for a combination of technical and cultural reasons, Groups are suddenly having their moment. (Apart from Facebook, LinkedIn revamped its own Groups offering this fall for its 500-plus million users, adding the ability to share pics and videos, as well as receive comment notifications.) In the past year alone, Facebook Group membership is up 40 percent, with 1.4 billion people — more than half of Facebook’s massive user base — now using Groups every month. Of those, 200 million people belong to so-called “meaningful Groups,” considered a vital part of users’ daily lives. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has said he’d like to see 1 billion users in “meaningful” Groups within five years.” Facebook Groups aren’t a ‘dead end’ but also won’t be the next Instagram story that goes viral – it has been around too long and aren’t being picked up by many large name companies with a vision to change social media. l brand.

https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/5-social-media-marketing-trends-that-will-dominate-2019/543477/
5 social media marketing trends that will dominate 2019
The world of social media is constantly changing, bringing new trends, ideas, and unspoken rules each year. As seen and spoken of in our Social Media Marketing class at CCSU. The list is as follows:
·       Social listening (monitoring) is the act of crawling the web and social media platforms to find all mentions of a brand (or any other keywords). This includes untagged brand mentions on social media, mentions of industry keywords that signal the interest to buy a product, mentions on blogs, forums, and news sites.
·       Video content; according to some experts, 80% of what we consume online will soon be video content. This is especially true for live videos. Having always been popular on YouTube, the trend has now taken over Facebook and Instagram, to the point when we get notified when someone is going live. The authentic and ephemeral nature of live videos seems to make them especially attractive and meaningful to social media users. Live videos increase the perceived trustworthiness and relevance of a brand, and it’s a trend that you don't want to ignore.
·       Micro-influencers; as opposed to major influencers, micro-influencers exist in every marketing niche. They have followings of fewer than 10 000 people, but most of their followers are genuinely interested in what they have to say. And they're very engaged - micro-influencers are often considered experts in their niche.
·       Personalization; as much as 96% of marketers believe that personalization advances customer relationship. Customers might worry about vague privacy risks, but they still appreciate the suggested product they’ve been looking for, as well as the notification of the sale in their favorite shop. Despite the concerns, personalization is clearly the way to go for marketers to boost campaign performance.
·       Timeliness; This is because social media never sleeps - customers continue to use your products, talk about them online, and buy new items at any given moment. This has been happening for a while, and finally, technology has caught up - we now have the tools to look for mentions of a brand in real time, tools that schedule content to be posted at any point, chatbots that offer immediate help.
“As a marketer, I can’t wait for these trends to come into more significant effect, and to change our lives for the better. As always, 2019 will prove to be challenging as marketers seek to adapt, but new tools and options will enhance the consumer process and provide new ways to connect and convert in real-time.”

Google offers new, free courses to help improve digital literacy
Google has announced a range of additions to the free courses it offers as part of its Google Digital Garage education initiative, while it's also added official certification to help add additional weight to the training. The new courses on offer include: Learn techniques for public speaking - Learn how to plan and deliver presentations that capture the attention of your listeners, whether it’s sharing a business plan or motivating your employees or colleagues. Communicate your ideas through storytelling and design - Ideas become more powerful when they’re shared. This course will help you discover simple tools like mind maps, storyboards and storytelling to help you engage people with ideas. Business communications - Learn how to craft clear, well-structured emails, presentations or reports. Effective networking - Whether you’re running a business, looking for a job, or ready for that next career move, learning how to network is key. In this course, we will introduce you to the principles of networking, to help you develop your professional brand. Now this is something to get excited about – Google is trying to help us in more ways than one. I am a big fan of Google and think everything they do as a company is spot on – I also believe that these training courses will not only be taken by so many individuals but will also create a big impact for a small business who does not have a lot of time or money to manage hiring someone to take care of social media mediums and frameworks. Go Google!

https://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/life-and-relationships/surrounding-ourselves-with-sycophants-on-social-media-is-not-healthy-20181204-p50k4f.html
Surrounding ourselves with ‘fans’ on social media is not healthy
I am not one that needs to have constant attention – my Instagram consists of my boyfriend and I, my dogs and the occasional selfie – nothing too thrilling or exciting. I have 700 + followers – most are probably fake account and my likes vary from 20 – 60. My Facebook on the other hand – I have 2,000 + friends but I never really post – I usually just share cute animal videos and or something political which seems to upset most of my friend groups resulting in maybe 3 or 4 likes and a comment from my grandmother. I believe that the more “power” you have in followers and likes – the more your head fills with beliefs that this is how you need to live. The depressing feeling of not having as many likes as before is a real feeling – not a feeling you should have in my opinion but does happen frequently. In the article it says “These days, we have our (relatively few) IRL friends, and a plethora of online friends and followers. Our IRL friends may still chat to us IRL, but our followers chat only "online", in comments available for other followers to read. And comments on social media are naturally polarized because most people are only moved to comment on a post when they strongly agree or disagree. "Love it", they write, or, "this is gold". "You’re a moron", they write, or, "what a load of bullshit". If a follower doesn’t care about our post, or doesn’t feel strongly one way or another, they simply won’t comment. They’ll move on to a more interesting post. As a result, we, the social media users, are left with the two extremes of commenters: the lovers and the haters. And, because we have the right to curate our own social media pages, we block the haters, and engage with the lovers. The lovers enjoy being appreciated and continue to post supportive comments. Soon the lovers become a Greek chorus of yes-men and women, who tell us how fabulous we are. Eventually, we don’t even have to block the haters (who are now "trolls"), because the sycophants turn on them for us. I see this dynamic play out constantly in my social media feed. There are benign examples, such as when the middle-aged style influencer posts a photo of herself in a deeply unflattering outfit, and no-one tells her. (Of course, we don’t. We’re not trolls! "Gorgeous", we write, and politely move on.) But there are toxic examples too, all over the internet.” People are overconsumed by this stereotype that if you don’t have a certain amount of people in your audience – you suck – quality over quantity!

Should you need to pass a social media check to get a gun?
As someone who already has their pistol permit, open carry and rifle license, as well as unafraid of repercussions from the various cat videos liked and shared on social media – this issue does not concern me personally. As for the rest of the community – it could save a lot of people. Not getting too into politics – I believe everyone should have the right to bear arms… with that said – there are of course exceptions. If someone let’s say his name is Mike – posts constantly about how if you ever came on his property he would shoot you dead. Someone like that would probably be less likely to receive their gun. In the article it says ““We certainly want to make sure we’re putting weapons in the hands of the right people and keeping them out of the hands of the wrong people,” said state Sen. Kevin Parker, a Brooklyn Democrat who added he was inspired to act after the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting suspect left social media rants that Jews were “children of Satan.” Free-speech watchdogs and even some gun-control advocates have already raised concerns about the bill, which would require handgun applicants to turn over login information to allow investigators to look at three years’ worth of Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram posts. Google, Yahoo and Bing searches over the previous year also would be checked.” I believe this is true – besides – if you have nothing to hide – who cares?

https://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/research-social-marketers-roi/
One of the biggest rewards is to make a profit. ROI remains marketers biggest challenge. I see it at my internship. They have monthly meetings with my our social media rep - KPI’s - social media outreach checkpoints. This is a major problem learning this - I assumed that with the digitalization of almost everything this would be a more uplifting article. As for information learned in my classes ... brand awareness is everything - especially when it is positive. But with the good comes the bad - “to accurately assess ROI, marketers need to define the primary objective and establish relevant KPIs that align with that goal” just as every business should look into from time to time. Learn what works and what does not. This article also mentions that a “re-alignment” of ROI measurement could be achieved with brand awareness rather social media floods.

Assignment 3 - blog #1
Reflecting on the past couple of weeks in MKT 350-02... I had no idea so many people were on social media. Facebook being the number one, then instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Pinterest, twitter, YouTube, google plus. The amount of social media aspects are endless. Between videos, photos and just random thought. I only use a hand full of the number of social media apps on my cell phone. The amount shared and connectiveness of the media community is unreal. I also did not know of what social media entailed - which zones are linked and utilized the most. As well as the percentage of usage between male and female. I am looking forward to learning more about how to market with social media and how to get customers to represent your brand without paying them beyond the obvious - have good products and customer service.
