Gaming and Virtual Reality in the 2020s and beyond
Virtual reality is becoming… a reality. The newest headsets available now are amazing enough to scare people away from playing titles like Resident Evil, the immersive experience has proven to be something people want, but how can we improve the experience? and what is the result of the end-user expectation?
The result is, of course, the Holodeck. The show has set the standard for what will one day be the kind of game we might be playing, but not necessarily with replicators, rather with shades and other accessories. If every new generation of virtual reality introduces one more innovation to the table, there could be no limit to how immersive the experience could get, as soon as we succeed in developing a suit and a way to encapsulate running movements within a small area, it will open the floodgate to all industries to start investing.
Corporate training programs, dangerous jobs, military applications, gaming, and sex. Five industries that will no doubt invest billions into VR programs once the technology is available and ready. The end result is an ever-growing field that demands better and better hardware and software in order to maximize job efficiency and personal pleasure. Sony and Microsoft are in a great position to corner this market, as well as many other PC companies.
We could one day face a scenario where all jobs could be performed either by AI powered machines and robots, or someone at home whose equipment works just as well if not better by wearing a suit and operating an android remotely. The possible military applications are downright scary: Drones and soldiers potentially fighting against other nations with similar technology; robot wars.
The applications are coming, but how long will it take? My prediction is that by 2025 we will have 8k immersive environments using smaller Virtual Reality headsets than the ones we see today, and by 2030 we will start to see some primitive form of suit-with-sensors and/or self contained environments that support movements from all limbs. I don’t know about you but that is an extremely exciting future, we will virtually be able to create anything we want, and do anything we want!
