I miss writing reviews

a freshly cooked meal is best but fast food or a plain cracker is better than nothing. a full skincare routine is great but a splash of water and moisturiser is better than nothing. 8 hours sleep is ideal but 4 or 2 is better than nothing. cleaning the entire room is fantastic but just wiping the mirror or throwing clothes in a basket is better than nothing. a shower is great but a face and arm wash or a wipe is better than nothing. changing your bedding once a week is best but swapping just the pillows or washing only once a month is better than nothing. a 5k run is fabulous but a walk around the block or touching your toes in bed is better than nothing. being your "best self" and thriving is amazing but if you are trying and conserving the energy you have and taking baby steps every day and surviving then that is wonderful too.

Sometimes when I go hundreds pages deep into people’s Tumblr archives, I find really funny posts and I weigh the pros and cons of liking/reblogging them.

Pros: I’ll have access to them later because they’re fucking hilarious

Cons: They might think I’m creepy. Despite the fact that it’s public and on the Internet, it is not socially acceptable to let anyone know the extent that you creeped their archives.

Also! You can use shapes for freckles, I have some with sharp edges, some that are rounded, and some that are in-between! Freckles are very VERY diverse shapes!

hey uh, if you don't mind me asking, but i got curious about how you do freckles and all those really cool effects you do (i got specifically curious about how you do freckles. they're honestly difficult and i can't seem to figure them out). like uh, how do you do your art if you don't mind sharing any tips with a fellow artist. if you already have a blog that explains some stuff, you can just link that instead! ack, sorry to be a bother ^^; (i really love your art btw)

You are definitely no bother and neither is anyone who comes into the ol inbox to request a tutorial! I have many many many that need answering as well but I thought this one was quick and easy enough to do!

It’s no secret I enjoy drawing/giving characters freckles - even ones that don’t technically haven them or not as many. Freckles are cute! I’m ginger and very fair-skinned so I always have a sort of reference on hand with my own copious amounts of  freckles LOL

It should be noted that the way I do them is heavily stylized and this is in no way a perfect tutorial!

There is no one way to do freckles and everyones is different! Technically I’m no expert on freckles or how to apply them to art but I’m happy to share what I know! - It all really depends on the person in question. I have many freckles, but the majority of mine are subtle and are slowly becoming a more even color with my skin tone. My BROTHER on the other hand has probably twice as many as I do and his are even darker and blotchy-er than mine. (the boy REFUSED to wear sunscreen as a kid)- It’s good to remember which areas of the skin get the most freckles. They sprout up everywhere. EVERYWHERE. Some bunch together more in other places the bridge of the nose, shoulders, arms, ect. Just depends on what places got the most sun. -Freckles are about as randomly placed as stars are. They’re messy. They come in different sizes and color. They often blend together. In animation (especially 2d) freckles are usually a handful of a few dots in a specific pattern. I’m sure it’d be a nightmare to have to animate natural looking freckles in 2d animation fhjdjdjd. It’s much easier in illustration.

In a quick step-by-step, here’s my usual process. I’m gonna use Cherri as a base (even though she has very little freckles in actuality I’ll be giving her more here)

1) I start by getting a darker color closer to the base skin tone and go ham on random splotches to represent older freckles that are fading away and are bluring together. It gives it a kind of organic feel, I think. It all depends on your style! You might even want to just stop here if you wanted something simple.

2) Sometimes I like my freckles to have a peppery sort of look? I’ll go with an even darker color and go to town with different shapes. I might even lock the layer and airbrush in a different color so they arent all the same. OPTIONALLY you can use a blending too to blend some of the harsher edges out.
