im getting a lot of mileage out of saying things like "they pay me for my words you know" after saying some really atrocious words irl. also out of saying that i have to go "write the great american novel" when i have to go write the great american novel. anyway. what were we talking about. right. yeah nothing in my life has changed except for all the things that have changed.

Sorry, the original EuroNews link seems to have gone away. Here's a CNN one instead.
...The EU AI Act outlaws social scoring systems powered by AI and any biometric-based tools used to guess a person’s race, political leanings or sexual orientation. It bans the use of AI to interpret the emotions of people in schools and workplaces, as well as some types of automated profiling intended to predict a person’s likelihood of committing future crimes. Meanwhile, the law outlines a separate category of “high-risk” uses of AI, particularly for education, hiring and access to government services, and imposes a separate set of transparency and other obligations on them. Companies such as OpenAI that produce powerful, complex and widely used AI models will also be subject to new disclosure requirements under the law. It also requires all AI-generated deepfakes to be clearly labeled, targeting concerns about manipulated media that could lead to disinformation and election meddling.

When Is a Small Press a Good Fit?
Tumblr media
When it comes to publishing, many writers will think about big publishers first. However, there are a lot of different publishing options out there to explore. NaNo participant and author, Clara Ward, talks about their experience publishing with a small press and gives you questions to consider while you think through your publishing options!
NaNoWriMo inspired me to write. Signing with a small press gave me the support I needed to publish a book I love.
I’d published books before—starting with NaNoWriMo sponsor deals in the early days of online publishing—but I never had the right skill set to promote those books. As a result, they never truly found their audience.
In November of 2020, I poured my heart into a genre-blurring near-future tale of sailing across the Pacific and building a neurodiverse, queer, and possibly magical chosen family. In 2021, I titled it Be the Sea and asked myself: What am I going to do with that?
1. Are you looking for fame or family?
Small presses are as varied as the people who form them. If you read widely, you may already have a treasured book on your shelf from your publisher-to-be. Try asking NaNoWriMo friends who share your interests if they’ve discovered any surprising or emerging sources for great reads. (At the very least, you may find books you’ll love in unexpected places!)
Admittedly, a small press doesn’t have a fortune to spend on paving your path to fame. But I have never felt as seen as when my soon-to-be publisher, E.D.E. Bell at Atthis Arts, wrote back, “I’m really in love with what you are doing and would like to talk about it.”
2. Do you have the bandwidth for working with others?
Even with the most supportive small press, you may have to push outside your comfort zone. I know authors who love the absolute control and freedom of self-publishing. For a time, I felt very comfortable just posting my NaNoWriMo fanfiction novels on Archive of Our Own. At most, I had one or two beta readers to offer feedback on those works. Whereas E.D.E. told me in one of our earliest conversations that in addition to our three rounds of editing we’d need “a good number of betas” to cover the range of topics we were working on together.
I was delighted! I knew what I’d written was ambitious, and I welcomed all the feedback I could get. But it turns out, each extra person in a process adds new challenges and delays. I had to stretch my empathy as well as my publishing timeline because, to quote E.D.E. again: “It’s a lot of emotion (as well as brain cycles) to go through...” Outside perspectives will only improve your writing if you are willing to work with them, to truly listen and learn.
3. Can you handle the two-way commitment?
No form of publishing is easy. The myth that authors write while others handle business and promotion is not true at the top, and certainly not with small presses. In my experience, working with Atthis Arts was like joining a team or chosen family. Beyond certain paid tasks, such as editing and sensitivity reading, I discovered a community of authors who freely offered coaching before my first public reading, social media boosting, tips for author webpages, and an extra pair of eyes on letters requesting bookshop readings or other events. While not all small presses work the same way, this supportive culture proved to be an excellent fit for me. Naturally, I wanted to give back whenever possible.
Small presses can only succeed with community. This month, as I promote the launch of Be the Sea at bookshops in Mountain View, Davis, and Sacramento, I will be introducing many Californians to my Michigan-based small publisher, Atthis Arts. When I stand up as a panelist at Norwescon in Washington state or at various science, library, or Pride event later in the year, I’ll be promoting more than Be the Sea by Clara Ward. I’ll give back by sharing my appreciation for small presses, the supportive and inclusive practices they can normalize, and the opportunities they open up for future writers and readers.
Tumblr media
Clara Ward lives in Silicon Valley on the border between reality and speculative fiction. Their latest novel, Be the Sea, features a near-future ocean voyage, chosen family, and sea creature perspectives, while delving into our oceans, our selves, and how all futures intertwine. Their short fiction has appeared in Strange Horizons, Decoded Pride, Small Wonders, and as a postcard from Thinking Ink Press. When not using words to teach or tell stories, Clara uses wood, fiber, and glass to make practical or completely impractical objects. listen, i'm not one for confrontation, but a few of my friends and i have been receiving really mean-spirited, entitled messages for creating the fandom art we want to create at the pace we want to create it and i'm honestly so sick of it. so, a couple of reminders:
fandom is meant to be fun for everyone, so don't be a dick. it's just that easy.
fandom creators, especially writers, are often creating art for free. they are sharing it with you, not creating it for you. they're under no obligation to update to your time schedule, only create within the sphere of things you personally like, or only create for your fandom.
if you feel there's not enough of what you like in fandom, go out and make it! it's the easiest way to get fandom stuff that caters directly to your tastes. it's far more effective than harassing creators for creating what they want to create.
honestly, some people make fandom so exhausting and it really doesn't have to be.

I used to be a really passionate writer and really enjoyed crafting language but it's been years since I've written anything that's not for school. I really want to start writing again but I don't have any story ideas that I'm excited about. What should I do to start writing again?
When you want to start writing again, but aren’t sure how to start:
1. Read a variety of books.
Various authors, various genres, the more you expand your examples the better because it means exposure to more ideas. Don’t be afraid to take up books you may not like since there’s a great deal of learning to be found in why you dislike something, and the depth it gets you thinking can help contribute to your own ideas. The “spite write” is also a thing, where you hate something, or some part of a thing, so much that you go off and do it yourself.
2. Engage with a writing community.
Every writer likes a different level of engagement, but writing communities can be extra helpful at providing idea discussion. It’s also okay if it takes a while for you to find the right one. Some writers are happy with the ones that are for pure fun and keep away from real critique whereas others want detailed critiques and a push to be better. The community you’re part of needs to align with your goals for writing.
3. Write what you know… so know interesting things.
Blatantly stolen from my own TbaBW post, but if you think your life is too boring for inspiration or you want to write about something but don’t know how, then get yourself out there and learn. Find new experiences, ask willing people about their lives, try new things even if you aren’t sure about them, research new subjects; increase your inspiration and well of knowledge so you can write what you know. You’re limited by your own knowledge and creativity, so work hard to make sure that limit does not exist.
4. Find prompts or guided writing exercises.
A lot of writers use prompts or guided exercises to get their writer's muscles moving. Aside from providing the base idea for you, they don’t require commitment and are just a form of practice, but can be turned into more polished stories if it really works out. The best use of these isn’t just reading them and deciding if you instantly like it or not, but taking some time to really think about how they can unfold.
5. Brainstorm.
While there are times when ideas just come to you, it’s common for creative people to have to brainstorm and put real effort into coming up with decent ideas. Brainstorming activities can look like, but aren’t limited to:
Inspiration from music. Some songs tell stories, some paint a scene, some capture a mood, and some are just good background music. Listening to music can be a good source of inspiration for writing.
Talk it out. Ask your friend and family what kind of stories they like to hear and why, or ask them anything about stories that you think will get them to talk. You may not want to write those exact things, but the dialogue can get some ideas thrown out there.
Inspiration from art. Similar to music, take a look at paintings, sketches, or maybe even dances that can provide something. Especially pay attention to the details and what the artist could potentially by trying to convey.
Ways to Develop Plot Ideas (link embedded) covers more idea generation!
6. Productivity can be worked on.
Most writers naturally go through a cycle of interest and disinterest in their projects or even writing in general. I have these linked posts for general info on increasing productivity:

Tips for Improving Writing Productivity, Pt 2
Tips for Improving Writing Productivity, Pt 3
Tips for Improving Writing Productivity, Pt 4
You may also want to check out the Motivation and Discipline tag since there’s a lot of info related to productivity and getting back into writing, especially when you aren’t feeling so great about it.
7. Don’t be afraid of not being great.
It’s been a while since you’ve written and it’s normal for skills to get rusty. Your skills before may not even have been where you wanted to be, but all you can do is compare yourself to where you once were rather than other writers. Writing is personal journey and can be a tough skill to build, so don’t beat yourself up if you have trouble. You have to be bad at something before you’re good at it.
Good luck with your writing!

It somewhat annoys me a little that when democrats talk about voting in the primaries they only talk about Biden. It doesn't matter as much if you're criticizing him or asking others to not vote for him, if you're only talking about him and using his name then you're doing the same thing news channels did in 2016 with Trump, giving him more attention and prominence. I do think if the Democrats want a chance for another to win in the primaries we need to talk about other people's policies. A political party can't win on the promise of not supporting someone
For example, as far as I can tell, Dean Phillips is the only Democrat that is for a ceasefire? That feels like he would be an important option to consider when voting in the primaries to stop a genocide.
I could be wrong in that there would be a better candidate to vote for in the primaries, but I do think over focusing on Biden might be the wrong play.
This might get me a lot of hate, but as the primaries are opening up in various U.S. states, I would like to remind you of what I learned from another Tumblr user whose URL I can't remember to credit:
"Vote your favorites in the primaries; vote damage control in the election."
I'm speaking to the left-leaning folks here: The primaries are your time to tell the party you want someone other than Biden. I completely understand not wanting to vote for Biden for his handling of the Palestinian genocide and complete deafness to how so much of his constituency wanted him to stop it.
If Biden wins the primary, and you vote a third party or Republican in the general election because you don't want to vote for Biden, we're going to have a Trump presidency. Do you think Trump, whose voter-base is fanatical, always votes, and includes a lot of evangelical Christians, will stop the genocide in Palestine? My guess is no. But he will help Republicans continue rolling back the rights of women and LGBTQ+ people. So the way I see it, if the federal election ends up being Trump vs. Biden, the options we, as left-leaning voters, have are:
Vote for Biden, who will not end the Palestinian genocide, but will not attack the rights of women and minorities in the U.S.
Vote for Trump, who will not end the Palestinian genocide, but very likely will attack the rights of women and minorities while escalating hate crimes by empowering bigots.
Vote for a third party candidate, which will likely just take votes away from the Democrats and hand the election to Trump.
I do not love this system we've culturally locked ourselves into where a vote for a third party candidate is basically throwing your vote away, but enough people believe that to make it true. I do not love that we're constantly voting for the lesser of two evils. I recognize that voting will not solve much, but please: Use the little power given to you (voting), and use it well. Think about the practical results of your vote in this coming election. If we can't get someone other than Biden as the Democratic candidate via primary voting, the U.S. ending complicity with the genocide in Palestine is off the table. Any choice you make after will result in the continuation of the genocide, BUT one of the two major candidates is likely to also go after women and minorities using the Republican power that has been consolidated in the Supreme Court and could spread to Congress since congressional elections happen every two years, meaning one will occur during the 2024-2028 presidency.
I am not Biden lover. I have sent him and the DNC messages begging to have him voluntarily step down so that he will not be the primary candidate and potentially split the Democratic vote between people voting to keep Trump out of office and people who can't bring themselves to vote for him out of outrage. But I am also going to get on here and beg the left-leaning public not to split that vote and give the election to a hate-mongering bigot who was able to convince hundreds of people to commit treason.

Right, considering the current state of corporate politics on this site, and that it seems that only those affected seem to be actively speaking on the matter, it is up to I, the only fucking cishet on tumblr, to drag this out to a wider audience.

I had a tattoo client ask if I ever used AI to design tattoos for me. Man I spent the better part of a decade doing shitty bit work as a graphic designer and now that I have the space to do whatever I want, I'm gonna let the computer generate random garbage for me? What next should I have a computer that eats my dinner and fucks my wife?

in light of israel's looming invasion on rafah, south africa implored the icj to call for the protection of palestinians with new preliminary orders. the icj denied this request, insisting that its january orders would be sufficient enough in ensuring the safety of people residing in rafah.
we have all seen how israel responded to the icj verdict earlier this month. they have all but intensified their attacks on palestinians, their favorite of whom seem to be children. this will end in a bloodbath. palestinians, already malnourished and living in literal tents, will be bombarded, they will be shot, they will be slaughtered. and when i say palestinians, a lot of them are actual toddlers. the videos coming out of this are proof enough.
at this point, it has been made amply clear that palestinians will never experience safety in their own homeland. a lot of the families in gaza are trying to raise funds to get out of it, because there's nowhere left to go.
there is nowhere left to go. if these people don't get the funds necessary to escape, they will die.
it's vital that you go to operation olive branch's spreadsheet, choose a family that resonates with you, and donate as much as you can to their gofundme. every last dollar counts. one dollar could be the difference between life and death for a family. please don't fall victim to the bystander effect. your contribution counts, however little it may be. and whether you're able to donate or not, spread this to as many people as you can. each second we stay silent is a second an entire family is brutally massacred.
