Abstract/Nonrepresentational
My abstract/nonrepresentational art seems very simple and it is but it came to me very naturally once I thought about it. It was weird because when I read ahead, I could not think of anything to do for a subject or meaning. Then it came to me finally after a few days and after watching the videos about Jackson Pollack and reading about him. I really think those paint drippings are how he felt. So here is mine:
Tumblr media
The round circles of all the happy colors are me playing baseball since I was 4 years old and then up through high school and being really good at it. Tons of awards and recognition and on top of the world.
The black violent blocks are me my freshman year at Stetson University, I was not a big deal I questioned everything about why I was there and what was happening with baseball and did not how the first step to try and make it back to how it used to be.
The next set of circles and lines and dashes that are moving forward are me this past year at SCF, I started the fall hot and doing well and got my commitment to go to the University of Houston. Then I started the spring season with an injury that I played through and did fine but did not have the amazing season I thought I would.
The red lines diagonally heading upward are my next path to the University of Houston. I am staying positive and looking forward to working hard and being the best player I can be.

Ringling Museum - The Building of the Palace
“The Building of a Palace” was painted by an Italian apprentice named Piero di Cosimo from 1515-1520. It is a Renaissance oil painting on a wood panel and is about 30 ¼” tall by 77 ½” long.
Tumblr media
This piece of renaissance art is designed with the three characteristics that are prevelant for that time period. The first is the use of one point linear perspective. When you look at the the artwork your eye is immediately drawn to the center of the painting and is a 3D image not a flat piece of art. This is done in so many ways. The first way that I see it is that the center of the palace has a light colored floor that is wide with columns and behind it your eye goes to the green hedges that line the walkway to the sky’s horizon. Another way di Cosimo makes your eye go to the linear persepective is by having a person riding a horse right toward the person looking at the art, exact middle of the painting. Another way he has your eye go right to the center of the painting is by having other humans in the painting pointing to the center of the palace. The second element of renaissance is the use of real humans. The figures in the painting are people as people, “humanism”. The third element of renaissnce is the classical Greek and Roman details that are on the palace that is being built. There are Roman columns holding up the second floor that has a very detailed design in the beam that supports the upper floor. The windows all have pointed arches above them and represent a very distinct style of the Greeks and Romans in this time period. It is a very balanced piece of art. The large palace is the focal point and is perfectly centered and the people and animals and other object are dispersed perfectly in the front of the palace with the natural landscape behind the palace. “ The Building of a Palace” is very easy to look at and is very organized yet has a LOT going on. The element of unity and variety is very distinct, a lot going on but very organized and uniform. The proportion of the painting is very much in line. The palace and the people and animals are all very realistic in the sizing that di Cosimo used. He was a mathmetician so it would make sense that the objects he uses are proportionate.
The colors used are very typical of that time period. The palace is a whiteish grey like the limestone that was used to build in that time period. The landscape behind the palace is green and blue and lush with a perfectly rectangular hedge row and grey blue dark sky. The mountains to the right and left behind the palace are brown and green and kind of mysterious. The humans in the painting are dressed in mostly brown and white toga type dresses typical of that time period. Most of the humans are working, some with large timbers and others with big pieces of stone and large beams and columns. There are 2 large ox that are pulling a wagon with a big piece of stone and three humans. There are two horses in the front of the palace, the one I mentioned that was in the center as the focus and then one with two humans on it that look like a frail man and a woman that are just walking by on the horse and not working. When looking at the painting, on the right of the palace toward the back there are many horses all being ridden by humans. It gives the idea that maybe this site is going to be under attack. The look of the pack of horses being ridden by the humans is painted in a way that feels like they are being aggressive. On the left side of the palace there are more ox amd maybe donkeys that are just in a cluster and must be used for the work being done to build the palace. There are two things that are weird, one is that there is a small child playing in the dirt under one of the lifted timbers that two men are working on and the other is there is a large marble looking human just thrown in the dirt. Not sure what the meaning of those two things are other than a way to make you think something is funny or just does not belong.
This painting makes me feel like this, when I first walked up I was drawn to it because what I learned about myself this summer is that I liked the architecture chapter best. This painting showed a building being built and I liked that. As soon as I walked up I said, “this is a building being built”. Once I began looking at all that was going on I thought about the stories that the artist was trying to tell. Of course I have my own stories of what I see. One story is that the Romans are building a castle, which they are calling a palace. There are many people working and some much harder than others and some not at all. I also noticed the pack of horses to the right immediately and thought this construction site is going under attack. The artist does an amazing job with the space in between each “scene” within the painting and it gives me an easy understanding of what story to tell myself and what to feel. Another story is he shows a child playing under a piece of timber which is maybe funny maybe not, but it is something that is part of the scene and its own story. There is another section where there is a pile of large rectangular rocks and one guy is chizeling and the other guy is just sitting on the rock and watching with a tool in his hand, not helping at all. There is another scene that has a pile of timber and one is diagnol like a sea saw with one person up high and one down low. This is a crazy scene to me because it shows that toys and activities that we see in modern times came from a very long time ago. In summary the painting made me feel like I could look at it one hundred more times and find more stories within the big story of building a palace. Clearly di Cosimo had a big immagination and had many stories going on when he created this painting. It makes me feel like artists had deeper more meaningful thoughts in the renaissance time period than we do today and painted because they had stories to tell.
This painting was in the Emile Gavet collections in Paris and then owned by William Vanderbilt and then inherited by Mrs. Oliver Belmont. It was bought by John Ringling in 1928 and brought to Sarasota to the Ringling Museum in 1936. The painting is a representing a scene from the renaissance period. It has been told that perhaps the painting started out as an architectural design but there is not any evidence that this building has actually been built.
The coolest part of research that I found was that a lot of the architecture that is on the grounds at the Ringling Museum is based on the architecture from this painting. The “palace” details are throughout the buildings on the grounds of the property right here in Sarasota. I know this is not information from the internet or a book but in my opinion I think is says so much about this painting and the influence it had on John Ringling.
Without doing research a lot of the information I spoke about in describing the painting to someone that is blind and the explanation of how it makes me feel comes up in everything I read about it. The tour guide I had was very informative and helped me think about art without reading anything. I think this assignment being something that was in person taught me a lot about art appreciation and was a very good way to get other thoughts and ideas about the things we see everyday.

Chapter 4, The Principles of Design:
JOURNALING:
1.Unity and Variety in the principle of design is the use of consistent shapes or colors to create unity, the variety part of it creates more interest in the piece of art so it is interesting to look at and sparks enjoyment to the person who is looking at it. In my everyday life I see examples of this at my house. Our house has the same paint color on the walls in the main parts of the house(unity) and has colored pillows on the couch and shiny objects on the walls and above the fireplace(variety). Another example of Unity and Variety is the art piece Thirty by Wassily Kandinsky, seen below:
Tumblr media
This unity and variety in the piece above is achieved by the unity of the size of the rectangles and the black and white color used. The drawings are all different in each rectangle which creates the variety and interest.
2. Balance in the principles of design is exactly what it says. There simply steadiness in the design that someone is looking at. My house has a front porch with 2 steps to the front door. on each side of the front door there are two windows on the right side and two on the left. This is a balanced, steady look. Another form of balance is the ying and the yang:
Tumblr media
3. Emphasis and Subordination in the principles of design is there is a feature to look at and then supporting elements around the feature. For example, at our house we have a triple palm tree as the emphasis and then bushes around it as the subordination. The emphasis is the red umbrella, and the subordination is the black and white buildings and street.
Tumblr media
4. Directional Forces in principles of design is when a design has the ability to make us look at something in a definite direction, meaning right, left, up, down, vertical, any way that the piece is taking your eye. I have used my house in the past 3 examples and will use it again. We have flat tile roof on our house the consistency of the tiles and the width of the front of the house makes your eye look and the distinct lines from top to bottom. When I look at the roof at the front of the house, I always see top to bottom and never bottom to top. This design is very representative of a directional force. Another example of the directional force is a wave:
Tumblr media
A wave instinctually makes my eye go from the bottom to the top and ends with the curl. For me there is no other way to look at a wave.
5. Repetition and Rhythm in principles of design is use of similar objects in a pattern that is consistent throughout the design. Again at my house I think about the landscaping. The bushes around the triple palm tree are first green with orange flowers and then below those are these rows of bright green fluffy plants and then a row of small silvery green plants with light purple little flowers. This is repeatable and has rhythm. A checkboard pattern is an example of repetition and rhythm:
Tumblr media
6.Scale and Proportion in the principles of design be sure the design is sized correctly in relation to the space the design is being drawn in or displayed. At my house for example, we had a magnolia tree that grew so big it looked ridiculous and was starting to look like the size of the Christmas tree in New York so my parents had to get it cut down. It was way too big for the size of our house and it looked like it just did not belong there anymore. I also think that artists use the scale and proportion element to make a point. I found this sketch:
Tumblr media
I feel like the point the artist was trying to make was that the cat is in charge of the human. The artist used the element of scale and proportion to make himself very small compared to the cat on the chair.
2. WRITING AND LOOKING
Figure 4.7 Chapter 4 section 4.2 Balance
Damien Hirst, POSTERITY-THE HOLY PLACE
Tumblr media
This amazing painting is oil on canvas. I chose it because it looks like a stained-glass window in a church. The element of balance is done so well on this, and I like symmetry. The black background is colored in using royal blue as a dominant color which is distinct from the other dominant color of brown. The balanced positioning of these colors creates a fish when this is looked at from a distance. This image of a fish is also created with the black lines of separation between these repetitive distinct colors. The main colors are created using shapes from nature, butterflies and rocks. The repetition and rhythm element is very distinct. There are so many pieces that are mirrored and consistent and the piece is still very interesting.
3. CONNECTING ART TO YOUR WORLD
The color scheme of my life would be sky blue. Growing up in Florida my whole life has painted the picture of sunny skies and happy times for me sky blue is the palette of the majority of my life. It is a shade that most people are drawn to and feel good when the sky is blue. I have always had a great family and friends. I have been successful in school and baseball and have a lot of support with my family and friends. In contrast I have not dealt with too many grey gloomy days. The grey hue affected me this year and turned dark at times. It is a time I will never forget and will always be part of me. I am just so thankful that you can usually see happy blue skies to remind you, grey is just another color.

5. PHOTO/DESIGN (2. Layout Design):
Good Layout Design:
Tumblr media
The McDonald's " The Golden Arches" are easily understood. The McDonald's golden arches logo has been in use since 1968 and easily recognizable worldwide. If you are in the United States or in Europe "The Golden Arches" are the same. Logos that are graphically simple like this simple gold M can stand the test of time and create a look for the company that anyone can remember. Before I could even read, I knew where a McDonald's was because of the simple logo. McDonald's fulfilled its purpose and intent with this simple design, it is simple yet bold and can be seen and recognized by all, no matter what age you are or where you are you know what "The Golden Arches" stand for.
Bad Layout Design:
Tumblr media
The new Smucker's logo is not good. Smucker's is a jelly company that is known for being traditional and wholesome. The original logo that I showed on the top of this photo is classic and very simple and represents fruit. Jelly is made from fruit, and this symbolizes the traditional and wholesome brand of the company. This new logo which is the one on the bottom with the multi color symbol is just not representative of the wholesome and traditional way of making jelly from fruit. Honestly, I did not even know what this logo was until I looked it up. I have had strawberry peanut butter and jellies my whole life and I just know the jar always looked like the logo on the top with the strawberries. The new logo is very modern and does not work for the concept of the original Smucker's brand.

Whaam!
1. One little known fact about me is that my name is Christopher but not too many people call me by that or even know my real name. Most people know me as "Pip". Pip was a nickname given to me by my dad when I was an infant. My cousin could not say Christopher and would call me "Pipapher". My dad loves to give nicknames and started calling me Pipper because of that. The name stuck and has been something all of my friends, teammates, coaches and family have called me my whole life EXCEPT for my grandmother she will only call me Christopher.
2. I was assigned #14. My piece of art is a famous piece of Pop Art called, Whaam! by Roy Lichenstein.
Tumblr media
Roy Lichenstein was born in NY in 1928 and liked music and played in a jazz band in high school and served in the Army during World War 2.
The words on the art represent an American fighter plane launching a missile into an enemy plane.
Roy Lichenstein was an anti-war artist, and this was created during the Vietnam war.
This piece of Pop Art was first displayed in NY in the Leo Castelli Gallery in 1963, it is permanently displayed in the Tate Museum in London.
Lichenstein's Whaam! looks like a comic book or cartoon and most would think it was easily drawn and then simply colored in when actually the technique to create this art is his signature Benday dot method. This method was done by pushing oil paint through holes of a homemade stencil with a scrubbing brush.
A replica signed print of Whaam! sells for as much as $3,700.
Whaam! is a large piece of art, it is 5feet 7 inches X13 feet 4 inches.
3. The way I first looked at the art has definitely changed since I first looked at it. When I first looked at it my thoughts were okay good a cartoon, it looks like a comic book, and I relate to it. I also thought this reminds me of a video game with the words. "I pressed the fire control". Now that I have researched and read about Roy Lichenstein and Whaam! my thoughts are very different. I now see it as a piece of war history. I am impressed at how the artist came up with a lighter way to display his thoughts on the war and what was going on in a very violent time. I think it is really cool how he showed the violence in a comic book like manner rather than a bloody graphic scene that most would turn away from. This Pop Art is a very relatable way for an artist to convey his emotions and I just learned that I really like Pop Art.
Tumblr media
Art and Writing - This art hangs in my closet. I see it every day. I made this myself with markers and paper when I was 10 years old. It means A LOT to me and is art to me. I made this on my own one day when I was feeling down and was doubting myself. It serves a great use in my thoughts daily. I appear very confident yet have many insecurities and when I see this as I am grabbing a t-shirt to put on it reminds me that I Can and I Will. This is beautiful to me because I made it at such a young age not knowing how much it would mean to me in the years to come. It has actually inspired me very much recently.
Self Portrait/Baggage - I am a 20-year-old young man from Sarasota Florida. I am Italian and Hungarian and have a very fun passionate family. For fun I play baseball. I also golf and fish with my friends and dad and brother and like to watch movies with my family. I was on the SCF baseball team and will be heading to the University of Houston in August to be on the baseball there. I sometimes work baseball tournaments on weekends cleaning the fields. I am uniquely me because I am a young man that is sensitive and is very aware of the people and feelings that are going on around me. I have a long time to figure things out and am still learning to navigate all that goes on which is a lot.
Selfie - I am fascinated daily by the strength it takes to get along in the world today. The expectations are very high, sometimes unrealistic, and the criticism is sometimes harsh and given without any solution. Our world has become very unrealistically competitive if you don't dig in and grind everything out every day it is hard to succeed. Even with hard work, honesty and determination there will be people that simply want to block you no matter what. I won't let that happen to me.
Tumblr media
This selfie is ART to me and represents my past year at SCF. I took this top selfie of myself in Polk County after having a great game that included a home run and other hits, we won that game. This selfie means a lot and is art to me because my season was riddled with injuries which is something I have never experienced in my days of being an athlete. It taught me to dig in and play when and where I could. I learned to play first base and learned it well. I needed to send this selfie to my parents to let them know I am good and okay and to stop worrying. The rest of this art collage explains me well. The messed-up face happened in Gainesville on April 14th when I was hit in the side of the head and face with a pitch while batting and ultimately ended my season. I took finals with a concussion and an eyeball full of blood, I absolutely crushed most and bombed others. The third picture IS me - "I CAN AND I WILL". I cannot be stopped and will work through it all to reach my goals. If I could use the methods of Romare Bearden I would paint a picture of a young man and then add band aids and wraps and ice packs and Advil and I would also have a warrior in the background to show I will not give up. Art by definition is a visual self-expression of an idea or experience through use of a medium. Using this pic collage as my medium with selfies and a meme is an artful expression of my experience and my determination.
