daytime television had been filled with so-called reality shows about hoarders, survivalists, preppers and coupon hunters ... the latter two being a match made in heaven; one to build the bunker and pack the grab bags, the other to fill a bunker and food store with change to spare.

little had they all known just how useful those scoffed at skills would be, or how close the world had been teetering to collapse.

this marked down the most they'd spoken since reno had discovered the relationship between the hunter and his mother had changed. he still didn't know how to feel about the whole thing, but selena's words had given him food for thought ...  i think your mum just wants to see you happy too reno. if this keeps making you angry, then she’ll stop - even if it means she’ll be lonely or unhappy. she’s just going to want you and your little brother happy.

he could be a shit, there was no doubt there - at times reno enjoyed being a prick, but he couldn't be so petty as to wish his mother to be unhappy.

Dave thought the same too, but it would'a always been taken with a pinch o' salt cos the boy was living in his house an' it'd be seen as some kinda nepitism. Least this way, he'd earned the chance t'cut his teeth on a hunt. I retrospect, Reno should'a taken part of a hunt in Leide first, like all other new recruits; the varmints an' dangers of the Vesperpool were stronger than the weaverwilds.

"Things are different here, but y'gotta hear me when I say yain't gotta be the same role ya were back in the other place." He could be a hunter teenager here, not a spy operative. "- what I say goes on this hunt, understand?"

mistake number three: ... well, if he was to list all the mistakes, then it'd take too fucking long. he knew how to watch the more junior recruits, how to spot the little yellow flags - not quite red just yet, but little warning signs that said they were wobbling after a another shitshow of an assignment.

if he saw one of those recruits doing tit for tat what he was doin', he'd pull them on it. but he'd never been the type to follow his own advice; do as i say, not as i do.

so that brought him to mistake number ... four? five?

fuck it.

he'd lost count long before rude had tracked him down and dragged him out of the bar. mistake number whatever-number he was one now was also not taking his partner's offer of crashing on his couch and insisting on heading back to his own apartment.

She broke out into a big smile when the Cap said he show her a collection of books. And then it dawned on Carmina that he said 'collection. They had maybe a couple of dozen books at Prosperity's main building, at best.

She liked to scavenge through old settlements and bunkers to find new ones; each one had a new world and story to tell.

Blinking at Reno's next question, she picked at the grain of the table again and bit the inside of her cheek as she nodded her head. "Don't mention to him about the books please, he's proud."

Which was a very fitting word for Enok, she had come to realise over the last few months. He was rough around the edges, but still proud and he wouldn't like her telling others about things he found more difficult than others.

"His settlement took the bombs as a literal new beginning. Before the bombs they spent ages getting ready for the end of the world."

The Turk didn't like this conversation. That much was sure. Though he was hard to read - very hard. And Glenn not good enough at that to figure him out. But either Reno was a full on psychopath or he cared about his family deeply and just knew how to hide it well.

Glenn seriously hoped it was the latter.
