(Marie X Rex Dangervest)

(SPOILERS)

Rex looked down at himself. He still hadn’t fully processed that he existed, with recent events, he thought he’d just be locked up without a chance to fully live. Now he existed AND had a perfect life...with the perfect girlfriend.

He looked beside himself, as his girlfriend still slept peacefully. She never was an early riser. Rex’s nightmares of his past problems, betrayal, and who he used to be always kept him from having a good night’s sleep.

After his problems with his ex-girlfriend Wyldstyle, he was set on living without a partner for the rest of his life...but this is what he needed, someone to love him again. Despite finding out his past flaws and his damaged mental state, Marie loved him. Truly LOVED him. Being the hero that saved the universe, and the villain who destroyed it was too overwhelming of a title, anyone would turn him away.

It’s an awfully petty thing to destroy the universe you once saved because your friends left you behind. Well, being alone for that long would drive anyone crazy.

Rex sighed, shifting to get out of bed. He felt a gentle hand tug at his pajama sleeve. He turned his gaze, seeing Marie move slightly closer to him.

“Not yet.” She muttered, still half asleep.

Rex smiled, “Want me to stay in bed longer?”

Marie nodded, “I need cuddles.”

Rex agreed, getting close to Marie, and holding her gently. He placed his chin on top of her head, as he intertwined their fingers. Their hands were perfect for each other, despite their obvious differences. Rex was actually scared he would break Marie on how fragile she was compared to him. His hands were strong enough to kill someone with a single punch.

“Rex.”

“Yeah, Babe?”

Marie smiled, “We really got to do something about those nightmares of yours.”

“Oh...you know about that.” Rex shifted his gaze, “I’m alright. It’s just something that happens. Ya know, because I...haven’t been Rex for that long. It hasn’t set in yet. When it does, I’m sure those nightmares about past memories will stop.”

“I’m sure it’s set in already, Rex.” Marie opened her eyes, “It just left a mark on you.”

No, Marie was right. Every time Rex closes his eyes he saw that dreaded dust planet, Undar was his prison for five years when he could have been saved. He still feels hatred, resentment, anger. He shouldn’t. He’s happy now.

He squeezed Marie’s hand lightly.

“Honey.” Marie sat up.

Rex retreated just hands, “Sorry...”

“No, it’s not that.” Marie grabbed his hands again, she kissed his cheek, looking into his eyes. He still had the same eyes...

“Rex, somehow fate brought you back, and for a reason. You being here with me is no accident. I know you went through a lot, but no one’s life should end without healing. You haven’t even lived half of it.”

“My life didn’t end, Marie. I just didn’t exist. My life here was fine, so why did-”

“Because there was a version of you out there that needed a happily ever after. The only difference is your life here was taken...by you.”

Rex showed a small smile, “But I got better than dumb old Lucy. Emmet doesn’t know what he’s missing. I wouldn’t let him have you anyway, you’re all mine.”

Marie chuckled, “Emmet’s not my type, though, his eyes are gorgeous.”

“Huh? What about mine?”

Marie chuckled again, touching his cheek. “You still have the same eyes, they haven’t changed one bit. I mean it, gorgeous.”

“Oh right.” Rex pushed his bangs aside.

Marie thought for a moment, “Tell you what, I wake up a bit early today, and I can make you waffles. Would you like that?”

Rex smiled, nodding.

“Good, it’s settled then. Homemade waffles for my prince.”

“I’ll never get used to that title.” Rex replied, “But if it’s for my princess, I’ll keep it.”
