‘ you really think so ? ’ in the absence of his father , polly would be the one the dark haired boy would chose to lay his faith in . her mystic intelligence and brave face , along with his father’s affections for her , left bonnie believing ( though he might not say it in so many words . . . ) she could handle anything. despite his talent and newly acquired championship , bonnie was just a boy. there was a hopefulness to his soul that made him both a danger to himself and others ; a naivety in his eyes that had yet to be shaken by failure ━━ never had he seen himself bleed in a way that would imply mortality , so the elder’s words to the contrary didn’t hit him with full force , and instead left him struggling with his want to trust and his belief in action to solve anything.

’ haven’t been hungry . ’ bonnie replied , giving an excuse rather than an answer. he hadn’t eaten , but there was nothing in particular that was eating at him . rather, a vague sense of stagnation . there were simply days where the wants and dreams of the young man felt less like an adrenaline burst of excitement , pushing him towards the next moment , and more like the wolf at his heels that was causing the fight or flight reflex to kick in, that any moment he might trip and pass on like so many forgotten ancestors . the usual demeanor of starry eyed , fast talking fighter faded like a photograph in the sun ( the image was still there , but the details were blurry now ; he smiled still , but it wasn’t the same ). give him a few good night’s rest to clear his head, or a fight to remind him he’s getting closer.

’ not as bad as it looks really. ’ the tone of his voice was chipper, seemingly unfazed — yet, he was rotating his lower jaw : testing the limits of the pain that rippled out from the shadow on the right side ( where a bruise would surely be the next day ), the blood coming from the cut on his cheekbone having been wiped away. he didn’t quite wince, but there was a slight twitch in his eye that gave away his secret to those who might be looking for it.
the fights were only half skill anyway, at least these days. the other half was showmanship. no one paid to see a clean knockout ( quick lunge, one punch, drop ). people wanted entertainment, and that meant making it look believable, taking the hit he would have dodged on the streets. ‘ it’s part of the job anyway. ’
