Masters of the Air characters as aesthetics
John 'Bucky' Egan
Tumblr media
Bucky was a golden hour, warm hues of gold and amber casting a soft, ethereal glow over everything. Giggles and banters over a sip of liquor. He was a low hum in a pub, filled with chatter and joy. Bucky was a worn sheepskin jacket, familiar and comforting. Waves crash against rugged cliffs, vivid colors pop against a backdrop of blue skiess. He was gentle and dominating, yet he asked to be taken care of behind closed doors. Back arching high against the bed sheet, hands pinned and left marks everywhere. He was a smoky jazz club alive with the sound of saxophones and clinking glasses, the sound of people laughing so loud until the stomach hurts. Grass stained knees. Running through the rain without an umbrella. He was classical music blasting from a cheap speaker. He was Apollo playing his instruments.
Gale 'Buck' Cleven
Tumblr media
Buck was a calm before a storm. A misty forest enveloped in fog, with towering trees draped in moss and winding paths leading to hidden glens and secret clearings. He was both silent movies and thunderstorms that you'd feel inside your chest. Raised eyebrows and cold hands, pinching the bridge of your nose. Watching a painting a bit too long before the gallery was closed. Long walks to the library. Winter winds and freezing hands, subtle glances across the room. He was soft murmur of reassurance and a gentle touch behind the doors. Consensual and always asked if it's okay. Dark red lipstick, chilled red wine. A quaint cottage nestled in the countryside with a thatched roof and ivy-covered walls, surrounded by a garden bursting with fragrant herbs and vibrant flowers. He was Hestia tending the sacred flames.
Harry 'Croz' Crosby
Tumblr media
Harry was the swirling feelings in your stomach night before a trip. A vintage typewriter sitting on a weathered wooden desk, surrounded by stacks of yellowing paper and antique books. The soft autumn sun. He was handwritten letters and cracked statues. Silver waves lapping at the shore and seashells scattered across the sand like scattered jewels. The rattling of rain against the window, messy and needed direction. He was scribbles and ink stains, messy notebooks, and the tea kettle whistling in the silent morning. He was urgent and hurry, but comforting afterwards. He was everything about pleasure behind closed doors. A disheveled bedroom with rumpled sheets and discarded clothing strewn across the floor, with posters peeling off the walls and sunlight filtering through grimy windows. He was Poseidon guarding with his trident.
Robert 'Rosie' Rosenthal
Tumblr media
Rosie was a vintage record player spinning vinyl records, filling the room with the warm crackle of music. He was sweet smiles and clear eyes. Paper planes. Overgrown rose bushes. That one song you always skipped but ended up loving it. He was tweed jackets and loose blouses. A field of wildflowers stretching out as far as the eye can see, with colorful blooms dancing in the breeze and the scent of earth and pollen filling the air. Gentle and nurturing, caring and soft behind the doors. He was a giver and always maintained satisfaction. He was pink-tinted blush. A pair of combat boots scuffed from countless adventures. Smiling at strangers on the street. He was all kind and modesty, but also Athena leading battles.

Taking Comfort (In Your Arms) - Chapter 3
June 9, 1943
After 26 days of Bucky talking about his boys, they were finally arriving and there was a buzz around the airfield as Addie made her way to her office. There were talks of the locals coming to welcome the Americans to the airfield and there were a few available women already tittering about what they should wear as a warm welcome. Addie merely laughed and shook her head, planning to tell Bucky that his boys didn't know what they were walking into.
As she let the door slam behind her, she narrowed her eyes to Josie sitting there with a bright grin on her face. “Oh Addie there you are.”
“It’s 0800 and I’m exactly where I usually am at that time, every weekday morning.” She gave her best friend a look. “What is going on?”
Josie pushed away from her desk, hurrying over to her, wrapping a hand around her arm and pulling her over to the window. “Major Egan was in here earlier looking for you. Colonel Baker pulled him into his office before I could find out what’s going on.”
Raising an eyebrow, Addie was at a loss of what John could want. Last night they had a drink at the pub. He was all excited at seeing his boys in the morning and her telling him about the prank the ground crew had attempted to pull on her father. He was a perfect gentleman as he walked her home and gave her a few kisses before leaving her. The nurses and Red Cross girls she was bunking with had fully interrogated her after the fact. They wanted to know all the details about how she had captivated Bucky Egan, the airfield’s biggest flirt, but she was mummed on the subject; the girls giving her hell for not divulging.
“I don’t know what that is about. Unless . . .” she trailed off, eyes wide. “Is it just Bucky and my father in that room or are there others?”
Josie shook her head, biting her lip. “I’m not sure. Your dad just saw him standing there and invited him into his office.”
Rolling her eyes upward, Addie sighed. “And how long ago was this?”
“Like 10 minutes, not very long at all.” Josie soothed her. “You don’t think . . .”
Raising an eyebrow, Addie motioned for her to finish the question. “You don’t think what?”
“That your father is giving him the “you hurt my little girl” speech?” Josie whispered, eyes wide at the thought.
Addie thought of her father - her strong, silent father who was always there for his children. He didn’t meddle in any of three children’s affairs, letting them make their own mistakes and learn from them. If he pulled Bucky into his office for the “talk” it would be a step away from his normal demeanor.
Just as she worked up the courage to storm into her father’s office, the door opened, causing the two girls to turn and watch the two men laugh as they walked out, shaking hands. Colonel Baker looked at his daughter and Josie, pausing, knowing he was interrupting something between the two of them. “Addie, today’s going to be a very busy day - might need you on the tarmac later this afternoon when the boys arrive.”
“Whatever you need, Colonel.” She replied, giving him a look. He gave his daughter another look, trying to read her, not doing as well as he had in previous years, before he turned back to re-enter his office, leaving Bucky with the two girls.
Hearing the door close, she raised an eyebrow at Bucky, waiting for him to spill the beans. Crossing one ankle over the other, Bucky leaned against her desk with a know it all smirk on his face, staring down Addie, without a care in the world. Over the last few weeks, their staredowns had become legendary around the base. Others have learned to ignore them until one of them breaks their gazes.
“There’s nothing to worry about regarding that meeting, Addie.” Bucky’s teasing voice broke the quietness that had fallen in the room. “The Colonel was just making sure I had everything I needed prior to the boys landing.”
The teasing tone to his voice made her doubt his words but she knew it well enough that there was some truth laced in. “Okay then. What time do your boys arrive?”
“They’ll be touching down around 1300. Will you be on the tarmac welcoming them?” Bucky asked, pushing off her desk, coming closer to her.
Shrugging, she pushed away from the window, meeting him halfway. “You heard the Colonel, I’m sure I’ll be out there eventually. You know the locals are all coming to welcome your boys - was that your doing?”
“Possibly. I might have dropped a few hints the last couple of nights at the pub.” The mischievous glint in his eyes caused her to roll her eyes. He stopped in front of her, his hand caressing her jaw. “You know they’re all excited that the Americans are descending.”
Looking up at him, she met his eyes as she giggled. “Uh huh, sure. I think you’re more excited than all of East Anglia. Your Buck arrives today.”
“And I cannot wait for you two to meet.” He leaned down, placing a sweet kiss on her lips. Pulling back, he looked at her, dropping his voice. “Your father isn’t very happy with me dating his daughter and told me to keep our affairs on the downlow but that’s the last thing I want to do. I want to take you to the town and show you off.”
“Oh we’re dating now? Hard to date someone without you even asking me?” She teased, raising an eyebrow.
Bucky squeezed her sides before giving her a look. “Go out with me Captain Baker, you know officially?”
“How can I refuse such an offer?” She smirked, leaning in, standing on her tiptoes, pressing a kiss to his lips.
He returned the kiss before reaching behind her desk, pulling out a bouquet of poppies and baby’s breath. “Will these make up for my lack of romance?”
Pulling the bouquet closer to her, she inhaled their sweet smell, her jaw dropping at the romantic aspect of it. His voice dropped to a whisper, tilting her head up to meet her eyes. “Be my girl, officially, Adelaide Baker?”
“Yes.” The confirmation was off her lips before she could even think about it. “Yes, John Egan, I’ll be your girl officially.”
Kissing her once more, this one with a bit of heat behind it, he pulled back, giving her a wink as he prepared to leave. “I need to find out your middle name.”
“That’s the most pressing matter right now?” She teased.
He smirked, chuckling. “It is indeed. Spill Bluebird.”
“Marie. Unoriginal I know.” She grinned.
“Adelaide Marie Baker, I’ll see you later?” She loved how it rolled off his tongue.
“If not on the tarmac, then at the mess for dinner.” She winked at him, watching him walk away before calling. “It’s going to be a great day, Bucky.”
“You know it, Bluebird.” He called back, the slamming of the door the only sound as he made his way out.
Taking a seat at her desk, she willed her heart to calm down. His kisses were some kind of magic and she savored each of them, memorizing them. She had a list of kisses that she could recall - big bird kisses, office kisses, stair kisses, field kisses (those were the more passionate ones), and see you later kisses. And now they were officially a couple.
A clearing throat pulled her from her memories. Looking up, she saw Josie grinning at her from her own desk. “And what was that?”
“What?” Addie played dumb, giving her best friend a smirk. “This isn’t a big secret that I’ve kept from you. You have known since he first kissed me.”
Josie shook her head. “But to do it at your desk, where anyone could see you? Bold, Captain Baker.”
“For all to see?” Addie scoffed, wide-eyed at her best friend. “We know Huglin is on rounds currently and my father is tucked safely in his office. Bucky knew you wouldn’t say a damn word - c’mon Josie, what’s this really about?”
Josie walked over to Addie’s desk, leaning over, dropping her voice to a whisper. “The last thing any of us want is for you to be transferred to another base. Just a reminder to keep a good distance from him in public, Captain.”
“Has there been any whispers?” The panic was evident in her voice as she took in her best friend’s serious face.
Josie shook her head. “Not yet but it’s only a matter of time. Might want to tell Lemmons to keep a tight grip on his crews - the busybodies and gossips they are. Also, you might want to tell your Major to keep his boys from gossipping too much - you know how quickly word spreads around here.”
She quickly two fingered salute Josie, before grabbing a pile of papers, appearing to look busy in case anyone should enter the room. “Aye aye Captain. Thanks for the heads up.”
“I don’t want you or the Major to go anywhere. It has been nice to see you giddy as you have been these last few weeks, Addie. Don’t want that to disappear anytime soon.” Josie gave her a wink, going back over to her desk.
Addie sighed, leaning back in her chair. Another thing to add to her to do list, right underneath kissing Bucky Egan again.
1300 - tarmac
Leaning against the parked jeep, she slid her aviators on as she watched the crews prepare for the eight B-17s to make their appearance. The locals had come out in stunning numbers, all ready to welcome the boys from the 100th to East Anglia.
Meanwhile, her eyes kept sweeping the airfield, looking for one man in particular, who had yet to make his appearance. She rolled her eyes at herself - she had literally just seen him 40 minutes ago in the mess as they had lunch together, along with 40 other personnel. Not exactly the romantic luncheon he whispered he wished it was. But that was the enigma that was Bucky Egan - leaving her wanting so much more of him.
The familiar rumble of B-17s caught her ear as she looked skyward. “Here they come.” Her father muttered as she looked from the sky to him, hearing something off in his voice. “You okay?”
He sighed. “The worst part of the job - putting these boys up in these aircrafts, not knowing if or when they’ll be home. There’s 80 men coming today with another 300 coming over the next few days. It’s the unforgivable aspect of war, Addie.”
“You have to believe they’ll come home and train them to do their jobs.” Addie looked at her father, a serious tone in her voice. “Where’s my strong, silent father that has been a guiding light all of my life? Don’t fail me now.”
Pulling her into a side hug, Colonel Baker chuckled. “Always the strong one, Addie. I’m sure you’re keeping Major Egan on his toes.”
“You don’t know half of it.” She arched an eyebrow at him. “Want to tell me what the meeting was about this morning?”
The Colonel’s eyes went wide as he looked at his daughter. “What did he tell you?”
“He was very tight-lipped about it - wouldn’t mention anything you two talked about, which makes me think it was about mine and his affairs.” She gave him her best upset face but her heart wasn’t fully into it.
The Colonel sighed. “I just want to make sure that you’re not transferred due to unseemingly affairs, Addie, that’s all. I just reminded him that he’s a Major, leading boys into a war where things can turn on a dime. Just wanted to remind him why he’s here and not to let distractions get in the way of that. I’m just not sure he’s the best man for you right now.”
“So I’m a distraction now?” She gave her father an angry look. “John Egan not being the best man for me? He is a good man, taking care of me and the only one keeping me level headed and sane day to day. And for the record, I’m not distracting him. We both know what our jobs are and that’s to get home alive.”
He sighed. He was never good at explaining things to his daughters. Elizabeth always had a level-headedness to her while Adelaide was more likely to fly off the handle at things; though she had gotten better with time, especially during her times with the ATAs. The last few months had seemed to undo a lot of that.
“I didn’t mean you’re a distraction, Adelaide. Don’t twist my words. I just reminded him that you both have a job to do and it’s important to remember what that job is so you both can continue to live your lives.” He sighed, pulling her into a side hug and a kiss on the forehead. “I just want you to be happy. I may not like that he’s taking a liking to my daughter - give me some time and I could come around. Just be careful as there are others watching the coming and going around the base.”
Nodding, she tightened her hold on her dad before releasing him. “Sorry to yell but I understood, Colonel. Josie already warned me to talk with Lemmons about the gossiping biddies of the crew members and get Bucky to get his men in the same order. Just promise me that you’ll get to know John outside of Bucky.”
“Wouldn’t hurt at all for you to have that talk with Lemmons. And I promise to get to know John Egan and not fall back on the Bucky Egan I know.” The Colonel smiled. “Let’s go and welcome these boys to the base.”
Hopping into the jeep, she felt the warm sunshine on her face as the jeep rolled down the tarmac. Pulling into one of the hard stands, Addie stayed back, watching her father welcome the men as they stumbled out of their forts. As the boys passed, bright smiles on their faces, they tilted their hats in her direction.
Sighing, she ran a hand through her hair. She knew Bucky would be happy having his friends around him but what these boys would see in the coming days, would change them forever. And that hurt more than she could ever admit.
When her dad was back in the jeep, she gave him a look. “Am I needed out here?”
“I thought you were looking forward to welcoming the boys with me.” Her father raised an eyebrow, knowing something was up.
She gave him a half smile. “Just thinking about our conversation earlier and I’m not in a very welcoming mood.”
He placed a hand on her shoulder and squeezed. “Want me to drive you back to the tower?”
“No, the walk will do me good.” She attempted a smile but her heart wasn’t in it. “I’m going to have dinner on base tonight but I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Love you Addie.”
“Love you too dad.” Getting out of the jeep, she started down the quieter tarmac as all the forts were parked in their hard stands. Seven had landed; there were supposed to be eight but that was for the Air Exec to figure out.
She was stuck in her head, thinking of the conversation with her father, and failed to hear a jeep horn beep. It was until it was almost directly behind her did she jump, startled out of her thoughts. Looking over her shoulder, she shook her head at Bucky who was wildly laughing at scaring her. “Look who it is.”
“Pain in my butt, Air Exec.” She called back, just as the jeep came to a stop.
Bucky clutched his chest in mock pain while his passenger chuckled. “You don’t mean that. Damn Bluebird, you know how to hurt a man.”
“What man? I don’t see any men around here.” She smirked as the passenger laughed louder as Bucky pouted, slugging his passenger in the arm.
Bucky’s eyes rose as he looked at her. “Continue to be mean to me, Bluebird. Won’t give you what I was going to give you.”
“Hmmm something tells me I’ll survive.” Winking at him, she held her hand out for the passenger. “Since Bucky’s being rude, I’m Captain Adelaide Baker, but you can call me Addie. Receptionist, rule breaker and all around know it all around base - anything you need, just ask.”
The passenger grinned, shaking her hand. “Gale Cleven, ma’am. This one has dubbed me Buck and it’s so nice to meet you. This one has stopped talking about you since I landed 20 minutes ago.”
“Well for the last 26 days it’s been all about you, so I guess this is payback?” She shrugged. “But it's nice to put a face with the name, Buck. Or do you prefer Gale?”
“I’ll answer to either.” He smiled.
Nodding, Addie turned her attention to the other man, the one who was quickly grabbing hold of her heart and not letting go. Bucky reached forward and laced his fingers with hers, giving them a squeeze, as he looked up at her through his aviators. “I have been meaning to talk to you - I have been told by two different people that you need to get ahead of your boys joining the gossip on base.”
“I’m not sure I’m following, Bluebird.” Bucky raised an eyebrow, attempting to follow where she was going with the conversation.
Sighing, Addie leaned closer to the jeep. “The gossip about what the boys might see between you and me.” She pointed her finger between the two of them. “Josie and the Colonel both warned me. I’m also going to have the same conversation with Lemmons about the gossipping biddies on the crew and their need to squawk.”
“Consider it done, Captain.” Buck chimed in, knowing that Bucky would slowly come around to what she was saying but he picked it up rather quickly. “We’ll make sure the men don’t spread unnecessary gossip.”
Addie grinned brightly. “Thank you Majors. Appreciate it.”
“I’d rather we let the rumors spread but I hear what you’re saying.” Bucky agreed, sighing in defeat as his best friend and his girl ganged up on him, leaving him no choice. He tugged her closer to the jeep, causing her knees to jar into the metal.
Leaning in closer, she quickly pecked Bucky’s awaiting lips, giggling at the scoff when she pulled away too quickly for his liking. “I will see you both later. Nice to meet you, Buck. Bye Bucky, don’t cause too much trouble now that your boys are here.” Giving him a look, she smiled as they sped away. She felt a bit better after that interaction but she still had a long afternoon in front of her.
As she continued her walk, her mood picked up a bit and before she knew it, she was back at her desk, the pile of papers in front of her a daunting task. Sighing, she flipped on the radio and went to work.
2200 Hours
Sitting in the middle of the tarmac on a blanket, she leaned her head back, wind ruffling her hair as she watched the sun lazily set after a long day. The sky was filled with vibrant hues of pinks, purples, and oranges as the sunset was painted out on the horizon.
The evening had been loud and deemed a roaring success. The officer’s club was brimming with new men, all eager for drinks, dancing and getting to know the young ladies of the base. She had stood at the bar with Buck and Bucky, eagerly hearing stories of their training. Buck had quickly become a friend as he recalled stories of Bucky to her. Bucky had stolen plenty of kisses and the boys had ribbed him for being a completely different man than they had seen stateside.
But now, she wanted quiet. The tiredness of the day hadn’t caught up to her yet and her mind was racing a thousand miles a minute. Taking refuge on the tarmac, she was hoping the quietness would tire her out.
Heavy footsteps caught her attention as she looked over her shoulder. A person, definitely male, was walking towards her. She squinted, positive it wasn’t Bucky but she couldn’t see from the distance. Before she could call out a greeting, a Husky came running at her, pacing around her excitedly. Holding out her hand, she cooed at it as it sniffed her before wiggling eagerly, licking her face as her fingers scratched at its coat. “Hope you don’t mind that Meatball and I are interrupting your quiet time?”
She smiled, seeing Buck had made his way closer to them. “Not at all. Meatball?”
“Benny DeMarco, my co-pilot, won him in a game of craps. He howled the entire way here from Greenland and yet I’m soft on him.” Buck said, coming to stop behind her, watching her enthusiastically pet the dog.
Looking back at him, she tilted her head to the blanket. “Come have a seat, Major. Did you lose your sidekick?”
“He was starting to sing so I quickly got out of there. DeMarco asked me to take Meatball out so we did some exploring and happened upon you.” Buck sat down grinning. “Have you had the pleasure of hearing Bucky sing yet, Captain?”
She raised an eyebrow, curiosity laced in her voice. “Do you mean while he’s driving or in front of an audience?”
“I mean full blown singing in front of an audience.” Buck chuckled, shaking his head at his best friend.
Shaking her head, Addie was a little weary to find out what that all entailed. “Can’t say I have, Buck. Should I be nervous when I do see it in person?”
“It’s a sight to behold, that’s for sure. And one I’m not sure you’ll be quick to forget that experience.” He ran a hand through Meatball’s fur as she giggled.
A comfortable silence hovered over the two of them, each lost in their own thoughts. Night was quickly descending on them as a chill swept in the air. Meatball flopped on the blanket with a sigh. “I can’t say that I’m glad you’re here, Buck. But I’m happy that I got to meet you and I know Bucky is ecstatic that you’re in England.”
“Mixed emotions, Addie?” He asked, as she leaned back on her hands, trying to get comfortable on the concrete.
Shrugging, she eyed him. “It’s different over here, and not just because we’re in a war. It’s hard to explain but you’ll understand soon enough. Bucky’s awfully proud of you and the boys, Buck, you know that right?”
“I do.” His gravelly voice agreed. “But you know that he’s awfully proud of you too, Addie.”
Her eyes went wide. “He is? He only knows a little bit about me.”
“From what I understand, while you were an ATA, you got into a handful of skirmishes that you managed to get out of.” Buck chuckled at her panicked look. “Relax, one of the Brits was telling stories after you left tonight. It made Bucky pretty proud to know you.”
She shook her head and mumbled a cuss word under her breath. Gale laughed at that. “You know, when he wrote to me and said that he met someone, I held my breath. I wasn’t sure what that meant but from what I’ve seen so far and after meeting you, I think you’re good for him Addie. Give him something to come home to.”
“Damn Brits and not knowing when to keep their mouths shut. He has you, Buck. He doesn’t need anything else.” She spoke softly. Buck quickly shook his head at that.
“Bucky has been a lone ranger for a long time. He’s dedicated for sure but the Air Force has always dictated his next move and yes, he has fun along the way. But someone to live for, he hasn’t had that in a long time and I think he’s met his match. I think you two are good for one other - someone to lean on when times get tough” Buck spoke quietly.
She let the words tumble in her mind as the quietness came back. “My ATA life is gone and never to return. Those hopes and dreams have vanished. I have to figure out what’s next.”
“From what I heard, once a fly girl, always a fly girl.” Buck chuckled. “For the record, Bucky can’t keep a secret for anything so don’t trust him with anything you don’t want getting out.”
“Noted.” She giggled. “You know he’s publicly going to hate that we’re friends but privately, he’s going to be all excited.”
Buck threw his head back and laughed. “You’ve got him pegged already, Addie. To the start of a beautiful friendship and driving Bucky crazy up a wall. And if you’re willing to share, I’d love to hear more about your time with the ATAs.”
“I’d love to share, Buck. It’s just difficult to talk about it sometimes.” She let the emotion swirl through her words as he put a hand on her shoulder and gave it a squeeze.
“The hard parts always are but I’m here if you ever need a listening ear.” He smiled, dropping his hand as Meatball whined for attention. She watched him card a hand through the thick fur in a soothing motion.
“Same goes for you Buck. There’s a reason you’re moseying around at night when you had a long day of traveling. Thoughts keeping you up?” She arched an eyebrow, curiosity brimming at what brought him out so late.
“Unfamiliar place - have to get to know it before I can settle for the night. It’s been that way through childhood and needing to really see a place before my mind settles. Though I suppose I’ll be familiar with it soon enough.” He mused, more to himself than her.
Humming, she agreed. “It’ll feel like home in a weird way sooner than you expect. It took me just over a week to call this place home and actually know where I was going instead of being turned around all the time. It’ll be the same for you too, I bet.”
“How long have you been out here?”
“Just over three months. When I had the riot act read to me from the ATAs, they didn’t know what to do with me. My options were to go home or set up a new base for a bunch of Americans, obviously you know which one I picked. But I soon came to love East Anglia like it was home. For a time, my sister was stationed here and my dad is here now so it has a homelike feeling to it.” She smiled.
Buck’s eyes went wide at the information. “Colonel Baker is your father?”
“Uh huh. He hasn’t been too hard on you boys yet has he?” She grinned, knowing her father could be tough, especially with a new batch of boys on base.
Buck shook his head, rubbing his jaw. “I have only met him once and he was cordial. I’m sure that’ll change over the weeks but Bucky told me it’s not Colonel Baker that I have to worry about - he said Colonel Huglin is much worse.”
“Only because Huglin doesn’t like Bucky - he believes the rumors about him a bit too much.” Addie sighed. “He’s a hardass son of a bitch.”
He threw his head back, laughing loudly into the night sky. Bucky had warned him that his girl had a bit of a potty mouth but to see it in person was completely different and entertaining. “Bucky mentioned that you said that about him. Best not to let him hear about it.”
“Nah, Huglin and I had words when I first got here. Huglin wasn’t a fan of having a washed up ATA on his base as a secretary.” She winked, giggling. “But I think I’ve grown on him - he hasn’t been this stellar with the brass his entire career and he has me to thank for that.”
Buck chuckled. “Does Bucky know what he’s gotten into with you?”
“I don’t believe so but it won’t take him long to figure it out, especially if you don’t keep your mouth shut. You’ve learned a lot of valuable information tonight, Cleven.” She raised an eyebrow at him.
Holding up his hands innocently, Buck smirked. “Your secrets are safe with me.”
She eyed him wearily, knowing how utterly persuasive John Egan could be, especially when he got a hint of someone knowing something important. She nodded, opting to believe his promise. “Okay then.”
“I’m sure the punishment for spilling secrets will be deadly enough.” Buck whispered as she giggled. “As long as the secrets aren’t spilled, then you won’t find out.”
A comfortable silence settled over the two of them. She was just going to suggest heading back to the barracks when a noise caught her attention.
“Of course you two would be found in the middle of the tarmac shooting the shit.” The loud voice of Bucky Egan broke the quietness enveloped the two.
“Finally realized I left you alone?” Buck called back as Bucky came closer to the two.
Meatball jumped up to meet him as Bucky stumbled closer to the pair. “It may have taken me a bit to notice you had left but I figured it out. Figured you’d be exploring the new place.”
“I was until I stumbled upon your girl. Meatball and I interrupted her quiet time.” Buck admitted as Bucky sat down beside them on the blanket.
Bucky smirked, pressing a sloppy kiss on her cheek. “Surprised she wasn’t up in one of the forts you boys brought in today.”
Eyeing him, she gave him a look. “That’s only for when I want to throw a temper tantrum. No need for one tonight.”
“That sounds like a story for another night.” Buck mused. “Meatball and I are calling it a night. Don’t stay out too late, Bucky.”
Giving Buck a two finger salute, Addie and Bucky watched him walk away, Meatball never leaving his side. “You two have a good conversation?”
“Getting to know one another, just like you wanted.” She grinned innocently. Bucky pressed a kiss to her lips. “Want to walk me home?”
He was shaky as he got to his feet, she grinning at him as he offered her a hand. “Are you going to be okay walking me home, Major?”
“Never better, Captain.” She shook her head, grabbing the blanket before looping her arm through his as they made their way down the tarmac. Bucky started singing under his breath as they moseyed along.
Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies

Feb. 3, 1945 BERLIN: Rosenthal and his crew bailed out after bombs away over Berlin. Rosenthal landed just east of the Oder River among Russian ground forces, and was transported to Moscow. Upon return to England in late March, he requested return to Flight Operations, but 100th BG Commander refused - Rosie had to quit at 52 missions. (source / source)

Taking Comfort (In Your Arms) - Chapter 2
Two Weeks Later - May 28, 1943
The last two weeks Bucky Egan had been on base were ones that were unlike the previous 8 weeks Addie had been in East Anglia. The base seemed to be flipped upside down just by his presence alone.
She usually found him nightly in a local pub, singing alongside the locals as he made ridiculous bets and talked crap. She watched in fascination as he charmed the locals, with stories and tales of his past life in America. There were at least three girls chasing him, by her count, all enamored by the American.
And Addie tried to keep him out of her mind but it was becoming more and more difficult, especially between him randomly showing up to her office and Josie’s constant chatter about him.
“I’m telling you, Ads, you should just ask him out.” Josie called out, interrupting Addie’s mid-morning mind wandering session.
Scoffing, she paused on the report she was reading and looked up at Josie. “It’s not right for a girl to ask a guy out. Besides, he has charmed half of East Anglia and I’m sure his social calendar has all filled up.”
“Who is this mysterious man you’re talking about? And I very much doubt his social calendar is all filled. I’m sure he has a spot for you waiting for you, love.” Speaking of the devil, he shall arrive, causing both Josie and Addie both to yelp in surprise.
Looking behind her, Addie’s eyes narrowed at the very man Josie was referencing. “Jesus, wear a bell or something. At least let people know you’re lurking around.”
“Not my fault you didn’t hear the door slam. I mean I wasn’t exactly quiet.” Bucky grinned looking at the two women. “Now who’s the mystery man Addie should ask out? By the way, I think it’s great if a girl asks a guy out - takes the pressure off the fella.”
Rolling her eyes, she shook her head. “You’re going to have to work harder than that to find out Bucky. Now how can I help you?”
Taking a seat in the chair in front of her deck, he crossed his right leg over his left and plopped his hat down giving her a look, sighing. “I need your help. I’m getting nowhere with the Brits loaning us masks and parachutes so I was hoping you could help?”
Josie snickered as Addie sighed. They both had a love-hate relationship with the nearby British base. “I will warn you, depending on the day they might hate me too.”
“They couldn’t hate a beautiful girl if they tried, Captain.” Addie snorted this time as Josie laughed out loud. “What am I missing?”
Josie pipped up before Addie could. “They can when our girl flat out turns one of them down spectacularly in the local pub, Major.”
“That’s a story I look forward to hearing, Captain.” Bucky chuckled, scratching his jaw. “Can you help a poor guy out who’s boys land in two weeks?”
She sighing, giving him a calculated look. “I need numbers, Major. How many masks and parachutes do you need before your men arrive?”
Watching Bucky run numbers in his mind, was a sight to behold. His teeth had hold of his bottom lip as she could see the gears moving behind his eyelids. His concentrated look wasn’t one Addie saw very often on his face, but she added it to her growing list of favorite Bucky looks. “We’ve gotten 200 of the 1000 that were sent. If we could get an additional 300 before my guys arrive, we’ll be in good shape while we wait for our stuff to arrive, hopefully a few days after the boys arrive.”
Looking at the pouty face of Major Bucky Egan, Addie couldn’t help but melt at his face. He hadn’t figured it out yet, but she was a sucker for a pouty face on a man. It tested her resolve and before she knew it she was picking up the phone to make a call.
She watched Bucky lean back into his chair as she attempted to work her magic. Doodling on a spare piece of paper that was always present on her desk, she waited for the line to connect, hoping it wasn’t the Lieutenant she turned down answering the phone. An older voice came on the line as she grinned. “Colonel Masters, this is Captain Adelaide Baker calling from Thorpe Abbotts. I was hoping you could assist me with a request from Colonel Baker.”
She listened to the man wax on about her father and the great things he had heard. Rolling her eyes, she sat back in her chair, getting comfortable. “Colonel, we need 300 masks and parachutes for the Americans that are set to land in two weeks. Their equipment hasn’t arrived yet.”
Grumbling, the man on the other side of the phone said a few words before agreeing to have the equipment sent over by the end of the week. She wished him a good day and hung up the phone with a grin on her face. “Easy peasy, lemon squeezy, Major. Everything will be here by the end of the week.”
“Just like that - drop your father’s name and all is right in the world.” Bucky whistled, sitting up in his chair, giving her a surprised look. “Impressive, Addie.”
Making a note on her desk calendar, Addie grinned. “All in a day's work. Anything else you need help with, Major?”
“Meet me at the officer’s club later?” He raised an eyebrow in challenge.
Shaking her head, she met his sad eyes. “I have a date with one of the big birds tonight. Unfortunately I won’t be able to make it to the club tonight.” Gathering papers, she pushed back from her desk and stood. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a meeting I can’t be late for. I’ll see you later, Bucky.”
Watching her walk off, Bucky narrowed his eyes on Josie who sat at her desk with a smirk. “Is there something I’m missing, Josie?”
“Every other Friday night or so, Addie goes to one of the birds and reminisces on her time in the sky. Tonight is one of those nights.” Josie smiled sympathetically.
Bucky turned her words over in his mind. “Would she be terribly pissed if I interrupted that time?”
“She’ll probably scream at you for a few minutes but I think you’ll be a welcomed guest after that.” Josie smiled, at the man clearly smitten with her best friend.
John plopped his hat back on his head, tilting it in her direction. “Does she have a particular favorite bird by chance?”
“Our Baby is a favorite if it’s here and as luck would have it, it will be landing later this afternoon. I’d start there.” Josie winked as John laughed.
He started towards the door, pausing looking at Josie. “Is there anything else I should know before tonight Josie?”
“Don’t break my best friend’s heart, Major. That girl has been through the wringer these last few months and she doesn’t deserve any other heartbreak.” Josie gave him a look, a mix that she meant business and not to piss her off.
Giving a two finger salute, John gave her a silent promise not to do so before leaving the tower and heading towards his jeep. He had a few things to think about before he had a date with a big bird and a pretty girl.
2000 hours
Tipping the flask to her mouth, she muttered a cuss when nothing flowed out. She was laid out in the nose of “Our Baby”, the last fort she delivered before she was demoted. Scoffing, she shook her head, not wanting to go down that dangerous path tonight. There was a lot of anger built up on how that went down. Throwing her head back, she screamed at the unfairness of the entire situation and that her past came roaring back.
Choking back a sob, she hit the side of the fort in frustration. She didn’t want to spend her evening sobbing in the fort - she had already had enough of those nights. All she wanted to be was up in the air but because of jackasses and rules, she was sidelined. She was lucky they didn’t send her home, though her father was the likely cause of that not happening.
A noise caught her attention as she attempted to sit up. Her eyes widened hearing the hatch of the fort open and a voice call up, “permission to climb aboard?”
Muttering a cuss under her breath, she shook her head, wishing her brain wasn't so fuzzy. “This isn’t a boat, Major but permission granted.”
She winced as it sounded like a bull in a China shop as he made his way through the fort. Mentally tracking his path from the hatch, she smiled as she heard his footsteps directly above her while his voice carried. “Where the hell are you, Addie?”
“In the nose Bucky.” Her voice sounded rough as she shook her head away attempting to clear the cobwebs.
Before she knew it, she saw his boots before his entire torso came into view. He chuckled seeing her sitting there. “So this is what you do when you’re not in the pub?”
“Sometimes. Other times I’m laying in a field looking at the stars. Depends on my mood and how pissed off I am at the world.” She shrugged. “The pubs weren’t keeping your attention tonight, Major?”
Shaking his head, he sat down across from her attempting to stretch out his long legs. “Nah, heard there was a rager happening at one of the forts and decided to come check it out.”
“Sorry to disappoint but it was a rager for one, until you decided to crash.” She let a half smile push across her lips.
“Do you want me to leave?” He offered, picking up on the sadness in her voice.
She quickly shook her head. That was the last thing she wanted. “Just know that it’s not exactly a happy mood tonight.”
“Wanna talk about it?” He asked, looking at her with sad eyes. “My buddy Buck tells me that I’m an excellent listener.”
Holding up a hand, she snickered. “Wait, your buddy is Buck and you’re Bucky? Did you really nickname your best friend after you?”
“I was Bucky first and when I met him at basic, he looked just like a buddy of mine back in Wisconsin named Buck so Gale became Buck and that’s quickly became what the guys call him.” Bucky defended, holding out a hand in innocence. “We gotta come up with a nickname for you, Addie.”
“Addie is my nickname.” She replied, eyeing him closely. “You’re not what all the rumors said you were like.”
Bucky laughed. “Glad getting to know me has changed your mind.”
“I’ve had my mind changed a lot these last few weeks.” She mused, tilting her head back to look up.
He shifted, looking at her, concern evident in his eyes, reaching into his sheepskin jacket and pulled something out - his trusty flask. “Offer still stands - do you want to talk about it? You’re obviously upset and sad about something and like I said, I’m a good listener.”
“I don’t even know where to begin.” She sighed.
Bucky took a sip out of his flask before offering it to her. She accepted, titling it into her mouth, the sting of the whiskey rough as it burned down her throat. “When did you fall in love with flying?”
“I’ve always loved it. My dad took me up when I was a baby; he said it was the only time I was quiet. I flew my first plane when I was 13, a Tiger Moth and I instantly fell in love with the freedom of it.  My first job was doing the crop dusting in the local fields - I had five farms that I would spend the days swooping in and out of the clouds and I was so happy.” She grinned. “A family friend passed my name to Jacqueline Cochran and I was in the running to come over here.  I went to Canada, the first time I had left the country, and managed to survive the grueling quest she put us through before being officially accepted to come over here in March 1942 and I’ve been here ever since.”
Bucky chuckled. “I think that’s the most I’ve ever heard you speak in one breath.”
“Shut up; that just means you’re not asking the right questions.” She shrugged.
He took another swig of the flask, steadying himself for the question he was about to ask. “When did it all turn to shit?”
Sighing loudly, she wiggled her fingers for the flask. He promptly handed it over to her as she took a swig. “February. This may not make sense but bear with me. When I left in December 1941, I was 23 years old and engaged to be married.  My fiance didn’t have the same ideas I did - I wanted to fly and do my part in the war effort and he wanted me home and tied to the house as his perfect wife. Well, that was the last thing I wanted to do so when Jackie called, I was on the first train to Canada. I couldn’t get away from Michigan fast enough.”
She ran her hand over her face, avoiding Bucky’s eyes as she sighed. “Well, little did I know, he had done a “welfare” check on the house I was staying in and found out that my roommates hadn’t seen me in a few weeks. He was pissed they didn’t report me missing, and they refused to tell him where I was.  He was on good terms with the local police and requested a welfare warrant be sent out for me in the States. The authorities were looking in the US so it took them a bit to track me down. My promotion from Lieutenant to Captain made the papers back home and the big guns came calling in February. This fort was the last one I had ferried to Rattlesden. My father and CO along with the Air Force big guns were all waiting to read me the riot act. They couldn’t have a pilot and woman who wasn’t as upstanding as they were led to believe and who had skirted her duties back home, blah blah blah; bunch of bullshit to be honest. I ended up being grounded for five weeks while they tried to figure out what to do with me. I was given the option of going home or coming here to set up the base for other Americans. And the rest is history.”
“Is this the Wisconsin man you referenced during our first meeting?” Bucky asked, clenching his jaw.
Nodding, she smirked. “The very one and the same. Don’t worry, I got my revenge. Now everyone in Michigan and Wisconsin knows how awful of a lover he truly was and is.”
“Remind me never to piss you off.” Bucky chuckled, shaking his head. “But you’re so strong - surviving that and finding a new purpose.”
“Well I wasn’t the hell going back to the US, back to him after he ruined my career.” She scoffed, giggling to herself. “I wrote him a strongly worded letter that our engagement was over and I never wanted to see or talk to him again. There might have been a bonfire a few weeks ago where I burned all of his things I had - letters, poems, his favorite sweater.”
A comfortable silence fell within the fort, the two of them content. “I can see you have more questions, Major. Might as well ask them since we’re on such a roll.”
“Can you still fly or did they tear up your pilots license?” He asked, rolling his head to hold her eyes.
Nodding, she smirked, her face turned excited at the question. “There’s a Tiger Moth not too far from here that I take up on the weekends to just keep up my flying - I couldn’t quit completely cold turkey. But I miss flying these big birds, they were my favorite to fly. It never got old when I stepped out of the fort to see the shocked faces of the men when they realized I was a female and could handle the big girls.”
“I would agree, there’s something about these big gals.” He smiled wistfully, knocking his knuckles against the side. “I heard you scream earlier. I can’t imagine the frustration and anger you feel.”
Shaking her head, she chuckled woefully. “You have no idea. At least you can still go up on observation missions. It’ll be a cold day in hell by the time I get to fly officially again.”
“Are the B-17s your favorite plane to fly, Sassy?” He tried out, smirking when she shrieked.
“Sassy, tell me that’s not my new nickname, Bucky!” She gave him a look that just made him laugh instead. “It’s a toss up between the B-17s and the Spitfires. Spitfires are fun because they are so responsive to turns and they’re fast.”
Bucky grinned, seeing her eyes light up at the mention of planes. “Sassy’s not an appropriate nickname but I will be testing a few out before I settle on an official one. Never flown a Spitfire before so I’ll have to take your word for it.”
“Maybe one day I’ll take you up in one. P-51s are also fun.” She grinned, watching his eyes widened as she dropped that little tidbit.
He bit his lip in thought. “You mentioned a brother and sister fighting. I know Elizabeth is in France but what about your brother? And your mom?”
“My brother, Charlie, is currently in North Africa, doing God knows what. He writes when he can, which is about every ten weeks or so. And mom passed away just before I left to go to Canada, another reason to flee as fast as I could.” She bit her lip holding in her tears. “My entire family is in the godforsaken war and I’m just trying to hold on by a thread.”
Before she knew what happened, Bucky was pulling her in for an awkward hug. She was so surprised by the movement that a few tears had escaped and before she could wipe them away, a rough calloused finger caught them. She looked up, entranced in a spicy mix of sweat and aftershave, into the deep blue eyes of Bucky Egan. Trying to steady her heartbeat, all thoughts that she had wanted to say were gone. “I’m sorry, Addie. Josie mentioned that you had had a rough couple of months but I’d say you had a rough couple of years.”
“It’s life - it keeps moving on its own so just buckle up and hold on.” A weak smile graced her lips.
Bucky scoffed, removing his arms from around her and scooting back a little to his side of the plane. “I think you have the best outlook for life, Spitfire.”
“Spitfire - that’s a lazy nickname, Bucky. Do better.” She cocked an eyebrow at him, immediately missing the warmth of his arms around her. She wanted another hug from Bucky. “And I got that outlook from my mom - she would always say that line about buckle up and hold on whenever I was complaining about whatever. She was right - you can’t change half of what’s going on so just buckle up and enjoy the ride.”
Bucky laughed, knowing full well having her in his life would keep him on his toes. “Will do, Addie. I’ve been having all the fun with the questions. Got any for me?”
“What about your family back in Wisconsin?” She asked, a chill from the night ran up her back.
“You cold Bluebird?” He questioned, titling the flask in his mouth for another gulp.
She paused, raising an eyebrow in his direction.  “Bluebird, that’s an interesting nickname. And yes, these forts aren’t exactly insulated, you would know taking them above 10,000 feet.”
“So not opposed to Bluebird, noted.” He reached behind him and grabbed a blanket, throwing it in her direction. “And family - mother, father and two sisters awaiting me back in the states.”
“When’s your birthday?” She wrapped the blanket around her, wishing it was a tad thicker. “And how old are you?”
Chuckling, Bucky shook his head. “That’s your grand question, Bluebird? September 8 and 27. You?”
“July 6 and almost 26.” She paused. “Why bluebird?”
He hummed, raising his eyes to meet hers. “Because you remind me of a bird who always needs to be flying to feel free. And bluebirds sing the sweetest songs. Do you sing, Bluebird?”
“Absolutely not, cannot carry a tune to save my life.” A not so lady-like snort sounded from her as she laughed, shaking her head. “You Major?”
Bucky laughed loudly, his laugh echoing off the metal that surrounded them. “I’m no good either but I’m loud. And if you commit with enough enthusiasm then it doesn’t really matter.”
“Well I’m sure it’s a sight to behold, Major. Can’t wait to see that.” She giggled. “What’s your favorite song?”
“Blue Skies - it’s a classic and it’s usually played at least three times in the officer’s club on any given night.” Bucky’s excitement was palpable while his eyes lit up at the prospect of singing in front of her. “Though, I may get a bit nervous singing in front of you.”
A flush crept across her cheeks as she ducked her head in embarrassment. His voice dropped as he took her in. “Awww Bluebird don’t blush.  Kinda wanna kiss you if I’m being completely honest.”
She looked up at him as he scratched the back of his neck as his checks reddened. “What’s stopping you?”
“This is a get to know you session, Blue.” He rushed to get the words out as she laughed.
“Wouldn’t that be another way to get to know you?” She challenged, making him laugh.
Scooting closer, he smiled at her. “Trying to show you I’m a gentleman, Addie.”
Scooting closer to him, she reached up and rubbed her thumb along the soft skin of his cheek. She looked into his blue eyes before tilting her head to capture his lips in a soft kiss. He deepened the kiss, pulling her close, silencing a gasp that just managed to escape. Pulling away slightly, his hand cupped her jaw, his thumb running soothingly up and down before kissing her again.
Time passed as they continued kissing in the belly of Our Baby. Pulling back, she laid a hand on Bucky’s chest pushing him back. “Slow down, Major. My brain is all fuzzy and I should probably head to bed.”
Bucky laughed and couldn’t deny her. Pushing himself off the belly, he offered her a hand, making sure she was steady before making his way up. “I had a good time talking with you, Blue.”
“Same, Bucky, same.” She murmured as a yawn escaped her mouth. “I usually am out here every other Friday, sometimes more often.”
Keeping a steady hand on her back as she stumbled through the plane to the open hatch, Bucky watched her with concentration. “Noted Bluebird. Let me go down first to catch you.”
“You think I can’t make my way through the hatch. Bucky? You know how many times I’ve done this?” She put her hands on her hips and gave him a look that did too many unmentionable things to him.
“A few?” He guessed as she cursed then shook her head. “But how many times have you done it with a flask and half gone down the hatch?”
She paused, giving him a look. “Alright, I’ll let you go first in case you need to catch me.”
Watching him slip through the hatch, she heard his boots hit the pavement before she heard his voice. “Let’s go Bluebird.”
Grumbling to she lowered herself down before slipping through the hatch, his hand steadying her as her feet hit the ground. “Want me to walk you back to the barracks?”
Holding out his elbow, she slipped her arm through his as he guided her across the tarmac. And if she let him steal a kiss or two or three as they stumbled back to the barracks, that was between her, him, the bright stars and moon that lit their path home.
Feedback as always is much appreciated. I’m working on the next few parts, so if there anything you’d like to see, just let me know. Thank you for reading!

Taking Comfort (In Your Arms) - Chapter 1
May 14, 1943
Adelaide Baker knew it was going to be a good day, maybe even a great day as she climbed the steps to Clearup Tower. The sun was actually shining out in merry ole England today and she was actually in a good mood. Her hair was actually cooperating with her today and she had her favorite breakfast, waffles this morning.
Humming along to “Blue Skies”, she pulled open the heavy door, quickly made her way inside, pausing to tap her fingers against Josie, her best friend’s desk as she passed. Josie looked up and shot her a wink before getting back to work. She and Josie had been best friends since they were children and when she was transferred to Thorpe Abbotts, Josie made the trek with her and now they worked together daily, side by side.
As she neared her own desk, she noticed an older, tall gentleman standing near her desk, reading a report, awaiting her arrival. Dropping her purse on her desk, she gave him a curious look. “Colonel, what do I owe the pleasure of seeing you here at my desk so early this morning?” A bright smile on her face, she slipped off her coat, placing it on the back of her chair.
Taking a sip of coffee, the Colonel grinned seeing the bright eyed lady standing in front of him. “I need you to do something for me, Captain. We have a new Air Exec coming in from Greenland today before his men arrive in a few weeks. Can you show him around and help him adjust to the lay of the land around here?”
“And you’re asking me to show him around? A step up in the man’s world huh, Colonel?” She smirked, shaking her head. “What time does he land?”
Placing the coffee cup on her desk, he flipped through the papers in his hand, studying them intently before looking at her. “He’s due to arrive at 1300 at hardstand 4. My recommendation would be to first stop at the mess before making the rounds.”
“Noted.” She made herself a note, scribbling on a spare piece of paper. “Anything else?”
A full belly laugh escaped her father’s mouth as he shook his head and broke through the military facade. “Major Egan won’t know what hit him when he meets you, Ads. You'll handle all of his requests?”
“Of course. I’ll make sure the boy has everything he needs to be the best Air Exec he can be. Any chance you have any reading material on him?” Cocking an eyebrow, Addie gave her father a look.
“Want to know what you’re getting yourself into Adelaide?” Nudging around some papers on her desk, he held up a folder with a photograph paper clipped to the front. “I’m sure this is what you’re looking for. Remember 1300.”
“Just want to know what he’s about before I spend a few hours with him. I’ll be on the tarmac at 1250 sharp eagerly awaiting his arrival.” The sarcasm dripped off her tongue as her father shook his head.
He leaned over and pressed a kiss to her forehead. “Behave Adelaide and I’ll see you later for dinner. Have a good day, you as well Josie.” Mock saluting him, she took a seat, watching him walk back to his own office.
“Well that’s an exciting way to start the day.” Josie’s amused voice called as she looked over at her.
Rolling her eyes, Addie shook her head. “Have you heard what everyone is saying about the Major?”
“Yes and they’re just rumors. No one has met the man, including your own father. I’d wait to meet him before you start believing rumors.” Josie shrugged. “Who knows, you might just fall in love with him.”
Scoffing, Addie’s eyes went wide before adamantly shaking her head. “No, no, no. After the catastrophe in Wisconsin, this heart is locked away.”
“You are allowed to have some fun, Addie. No one is telling you to stay guarded and locked hearted. You’re young, and after the last year, you should cut loose and have some fun. All we want for you is to be happy, however that looks.” Josie smiled sympathetically at her best friend.
Sighing, Addie took in her best friend’s words. The last year had been hell and her dreams were gone in an instant, leaving her with an unexpected future. She thought she would fly the big birds until the war was over and before she knew it, her hopes and dreams went up in smoke.
Addie looked at her watch, it was just after 0900 and she had a pile of papers in front of her that weren’t going to file themselves. She gave Josie a bright smile before getting to work, pushing the Major out of her mind until she actually needed to worry about him.
After being pulled into a few unexpected meetings, the morning passed by quickly for Addie. Before she knew it it was 1245. She quickly grabbed the paperwork necessary and a set of keys that were left on her desk. Hearing the door slam behind her, she quickly made her way down the tower steps, tilting her head back enjoying the sunshine on her face before making her way to the awaiting jeep. Jumping the engine, she grinned hearing the jeep roar to life before pulling out and speeding down the tarmac.
Pulling to a stop on the grass adjacent to the hardstand, she took a deep breath, feeling the light breeze ruffle her hair. She watched the ground crew prep the hardstand for the impending bird’s arrival.
“Miss Addie, you’re a sight for sore eyes.” Lemmons called out, as there were a few wolf whistles from the crew around him.
When she first arrived on base, she was happy to see some familiar faces, including Lemmons who was one that she had seen at Rattlesden when she would deliver planes there. The two had formed a friendship and she was excited to see him when she landed at Thorpe Abbotts.
Laughing, she stepped out of the jeep, thankful she wore flats today. “You tell that to all the pretty girls, Lemmons. You keeping these boys in line?”
“Trying to - it’s a hard task that someone has to do.” He replied back laughing as all the guys around him protested.
She heard the familiar roar of a B-17 as it approached. Shielding her eyes from the sun, she looked up following its path as it made a smooth landing. Watching as the bird, Saving Grace, came to a stop, she smiled. She had always loved the big birds and loved flying them.
Pushing off the jeep, she watched as the hatch opened, several gentlemen stumbling out attempting to get their balance after being in the air for so long. She instantly recognized Major Egan from his photograph and walked over to him, calling, “Major Egan.”
He whirled around hearing his name called, not expecting a pretty girl to be the one calling his name. He had to stop his jaw from dropping when he took her in. “Yes? And you can call me Bucky.”
“Bucky? Well, I’m Captain Adelaide Baker and I’m here to show you around.” She held out her hand as he gripped it, giving it a shake. Bucky was a rather odd nickname but she didn’t think much of it as she’d definitely heard odder nicknames during her time with the ATAs. “Do you have everything?”
“I’m a light packer.” She motioned for him to follow her to the awaiting jeep, him getting in before giving her a look. “Didn’t know I was special enough for an escort?”
She laughed, shaking her head. “Bucky, the brass wanted to make sure you felt a warm welcome to Thorpe Abbotts. Something about not wanting to scare you away before your men come over.”
“Well, so far I feel really welcome.” He chuckled as a flush crossed her cheeks. “And what does the welcoming tour entail?”
Putting the jeep in gear, she hit the gas as they flew down the tarmac towards the mess. “First stop, by recommendation, is the mess where you can get some grub then I’ll show you the barracks and the tower, where your office will be located.”
“Can you tell me a bit more about Thorpe Abbotts?” He asked, as she glanced over at him.
Shrugging, she geared down, slowing the jeep down as they neared the mess hall. “I’ve only been here for 8 weeks so there’s not much to tell. The US has only had the base for the last 12 weeks. Men come and go and the world keeps turning.”
“Eight weeks? That’s not very long.” He commented as she stopped the jeep and made to get out, he followed behind her.
Shaking her head, she opened the door, motioning him to go before her. “I was transferred here recently. It wasn’t my choice to be here but we do what we must.”
He heard the remorse and heaviness in her voice as he walked through the door. The mess was loud and rambunctious with officers scattered around. He followed her as she set her stuff down at a table. “Grab some grub and we’ll discuss what the afternoon will look like.”
“Are you getting any?” The concern was evident in his voice as she shook her head.
“Already ate before you came.” She sat down at the table, flipping through the papers, making some notes along the way as he disappeared to join the line. Addie smiled at some of the men that were scattered around as they caught her eye.
Soon a tray was dropped onto the table, knocking her back into the present. She plastered a smile on her face as Major Egan dropped into his seat and started eating. “This afternoon, you’ll have a meeting with Colonel Huglin and Colonel Baker. They’ll meet with you on expectations and what the next few weeks look like. Any questions so far?”
“All my questions are about you and not the base.” He smirked. “But can I reserve the right to ask some along the way?”
She chuckled. “Ask away, Bucky. Anything I don’t want to answer, I won’t.”
“You mentioned that it wasn’t your choice to come to Thorpe Abbotts, yet you’re here. Why?” He asked, shoveling another bite into his mouth.
She shook her head, giving him a look. “You’re going to have to get me drunk before I start discussing those secrets. Next question?”
“Challenge accepted, Captain. So can I take you out sometime?” He raised an eyebrow in challenge.
Addie giggled. “You haven’t been on the ground for an hour yet you are already asking me out. My, my Major don’t you move fast? I don’t even know where you’re from or your first name.”
“Manitowoc, Wisconsin and John, ma’am.” He showed her the million watt smile that usually got him his way.
Scoffing, she shook her head. “Of course you’re a Wisconsin man. Charm never fails you, does it?”
“What’s wrong with Wisconsin, Adelaide?” Leaning forward, John failed to see the issue with his home state.
She paused hearing her full name come from his lips, a smirk tugging on her own lips. “You can call me Addie. And nothing is wrong with it - I spent part of my summers growing up in Northern Wisconsin, a gorgeous state. You're exactly like the charming man I met in my past life who is from Wisconsin.”
“And where are you from, Addie?” He asked, turning the question back on her.
Pushing aside the papers, she folded her hands, looking at him. “Grew up on the Selfridge Air National Guard Base, just north of Detroit, Michigan. My dad has been in the military since I was a baby so we made our home there. My older sister and younger brother are both doing their part in the war effort currently.”
“Did you move around a lot as a child?” John asked, pushing his tray away and leaning back in his chair.
Shaking her head, Addie smiled. “Thankfully no. We moved once from the westside of Michigan to Selfridge on the eastside right after I was born and stayed there until I came over for the war, just before Pearl Harbor. I was part of the ATAs when Jaqueline Cochran brought a group over and never left. Where does the nickname Bucky come from?”
“Childhood nickname, don’t quite remember how it started. So you’re a fly girl?” His eyes widened, impressed with her as he looked at the woman in front of him.
She stood, grabbing her paper, giving him a look. “A former one, yes. Come along Major. We have places to be.”
“But I have so many more questions.” The whine was evident in his voice as he followed her through the mess hall.
Shaking her head, she pushed open the door, holding it for him to follow. “If you’re lucky, you might find me at the officers club tonight. But until then, your tour awaits.”
Climbing back into the jeep, she slowed in front of the infirmary. “Beware of the nurses in there. Some of them aren’t nice.”
“Speaking from experience?” John grinned, looking at her through his aviator sunglasses.
She smirked. “When you come home with a head wound that’s needing stitches, they tend to kick up a fuss and aren’t very gentle. It was Elizabeth, my own sister that did that. But she’s gone now.”
“Gone?” The concern was back in his voice as Addie smiled softly.
“She got transferred to Suippes, France last I heard. But that was three weeks ago so who knows.” She sighed. “That’s what she gets for being so damn good at her job.”
Gunning the engine, Addie continued on pointing out other buildings before coming to a stop at the barracks. “Head in, Major. Lieutenant Davis should be awaiting you to show you your bunk. I’ll wait here before taking you over to the tower to meet with the Colonels.”
He nodded, grabbing his bags before getting out of the jeep. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry your Elizabeth is so close to the action. That can’t be easy.”
“We all do what we must, Major. This is just part of war.” She gave him a tight smile, watching him walk away.
As Addie waited, she had just one question on her mind - what the hell had she gotten herself into?
———————————————————
Fifteen minutes after she watched him walk into the barracks, he was walking out through the door once more. Climbing back into the jeep, he adjusted his hat before giving her a look. “Onward?”
Nodding, she shifted the jeep, pressing the gas pedal as they sped forward. “Who am I meeting with again?”
His voice broke the comfortable silence that had settled between them. “Colonel Huglin and Colonel Baker. They’ll set expectations for you for the upcoming weeks while we await your boys to land.”
“Any relation to you?” Bucky asked, as she snorted, chuckling.
“Took you long enough to ask.” She pulled to a stop in front of the tower. “And yes, that’s my father. He was reassigned here four weeks ago.”
Bucky’s eyes went wide. “And the fear factor just went up a bit.”
“Awww Major, don’t be scared of Colonel Baker.” She dropped her voice and winked. “The one you need to be scared of is Huglin. He’s a hard ass son of a bitch. And will probably whip you and your boys into shape in no time.”
Bucky threw his head back and laughed. He had never heard a girl with a mouth like hers and he couldn’t say he disliked it. “Damn Baker. You got a mouth on you.”
“Sorry.” She blushed. “When you grow up on a military base, you hear your fair share of words.”
Bucky quickly shook his head. “I didn’t say I didn’t like it. Just took me by surprise as you have been a perfect lady up until this point.”
“Looks can be deceiving, Major. Best to remember that.” She smirked, getting out of the jeep and motioning him to follow her. “Put on your military hat, Major. Your English military career starts now.”
He two fingered salute her before following her up the tower steps, stepping into the tower right behind her. “Major, welcome to Clearup Tower. This is where you’ll be stationed and awaiting news on your boys’ return. Both Colonels’ offices along with mine and your offices are located here as well.”
A throat clearing caught her attention as she smirked. “Ahh Major Egan, this is Josephine Adams, also known as my best friend. Josie, this is Major Egan, who just flew in today.”
“Pleasure to meet you Josie.” Bucky tipped his hat in her direction as he caught movement from behind him.
Addie came to attention as both Colonels shuffled in behind them. John quickly followed suit before the younger of the two called out “at ease.”
“Thank you Captain for showing Major Egan around. Major Egan, welcome to Thorpe Abbotts. I’m Colonel Huglin and this is Colonel Baker.” Huglin introduced himself, before looking in Addie’s direction. “You’re dismissed Captain Baker.”
Nodding to the men, Addie winked in Bucky’s direction before shuffling over to her desk. Taking a seat, she quickly flipped through the papers left on her desk as the men took their leave.
“Successful afternoon?” Josie whispered as the door to Huglin’s office closed.
Looking from the office to her best friend’s grin, Addie slowly nodded. “I believe so.”
“Well if there’s any consultation, that man couldn’t keep his eyes off of you, Adelaide.” Josie snickered. “So whatever you did earlier, keep doing it. Something has his attention.”
Ducking her face down, Addie felt her cheeks heat at Josie’s words. She didn’t do anything special, she thought. Just showed him around the base and answered his questions.
A million and one questions screamed in her head but one was louder than the rest - just what did Bucky Egan want with a girl like her?
What do you think? Feedback and comments would be most appreciated.
