The Beano's Dennis, Gnasher and Walter Join Minecraft
The Beano's Dennis, Gnasher and Walter join Minecraft By Emily Thomas Newsbeat reporter
Minecraft players need to watch out for "softy" Walter and his stinky pants.
You can now add Walter, Dennis, the Menace, and Gnasher from The Beano to the PC version of the game.
Gnasher can be turned into a sausage by players and all of Dennis the tricks, including catapults and stink bombs are a possibility to use.
It's part of the Beano's larger plans to expand into digital media and its mod has come from a collaboration between the show and Frima Studios, a Canadian multiplatform game developer.
Mark Cotton, who is responsible for digital changes at Beano Mark Cotton, who is the head of digital at Beano Newsbeat that Minecraft is "their biggest passion and their most cherished love"
Mark says the game is an "extension" of The Beano comic and an attempt to make The Beano "a more overall experience" for kids.
"Roughly 32,000 comics are sold each week at the Beano which is an extremely healthy amount," he says.
However, it's a lot less than the two million magazines sold during the peak of the magazines.
Mark says, "We are very conscious that today's kids are passionate about digital."
"We must make The Beano a 360 brand, where Dennis and Gnasher are everywhere the kids are, rather than expecting them to visit our store.
"So we're currently working on a variety of initiatives over the next three to six months."
Some of these initiatives include puzzle-based apps, an interactive comic, and an "action 3D game for children".
The Beano's publisher DC Thompson has already extended the brand's reach to a television show, a photo-sharing application and YouTube channel.
Grand Theft Auto?
The comic has been around since 1938 and has a lot of adult fans. The Beano characters could also make an appearances in adult games, such as Dennis the Menace in Grand Theft Auto.
"No. It's not something we'd be focusing on at the moment," says Mark.
"We're focused on the 7-11-year-old digital product - for the moment, digital for us is about really engaging with children and understanding their passions."
They've been working with 10 Minecraft and Beano enthusiasts aged 7-11 during the development process.
Minnie the Minx?
"We basically asked children"If Beano were to be in Minecraft, what would it look like?
"This was the first step in imagining what they wanted. Their imaginations can stretch way beyond what we can do today. Minecraftservers.life
"But they wanted Pranks They wanted Walter they wanted Gnasher, they wanted to dress up as Dennis and that's exactly the thing we've given them.
"We'll continue to communicate with them. We'd like to extend this and to build Beanotown and let children be creative.
"Minecraft is so popular because it gives kids the power. If we try to restrict the children and tell them what they should do, they'd reject it."
Are there any other characters who could be allowed to participate in?
"We definitely want to extend it," says Mark.
"Minnie the Minx is the obvious character and the one that the kids have been asking about so that's what I'd probably take a look at next."
