When we meet Wade in the show, he's talking to himself, trying really hard to hype himself up. Wade isn't oblivious to the way other people see him, and its taken a toll on his confidence.
So when this echidna appears out of nowhere, showing more faith in Wade than anyone else has, of course he jumps at the opportunity.
Wade tries so hard to make Knuckles proud, he even daydreams about rescuing him and receiving a hug in return. He's almost like a child wanting to impress his father.
Wade isn't the brightest but he's capable of doing great things when motivated (probably how he got so good at bowling in the first place). He just needed someone to believe in him.
But over time Wade becomes more of an uncle figure. He starts sharing things he and his father used to bond over with Knuckles, such as bowling and his old CDs. Wade even gives Knuckles the same advice he got from his dad about celebrating small victories.
I really loved the way Wade was written in the show, and his relationship with Knuckles.
