Super 8mm film inspiration
I went to the MONA museum in Hobart in April this year. This museum has shown all kinds of art forms. What attracts me most is this following picture.
Tumblr media
This picture actually is an installation art, which will show different moulds of private parts of women. As far as I am concerned, the artist designed this, which means that he wants to through this to stimulate people's infinite reverie about the private parts of the human body.
After I saw this gallery, I had an idea, why not show some private parts of men, therefore i borrowed my friend’s super 8mm film camera, after i got my friend’s permission , I shot 4 private parts of my friends, and I made a super 8mm film.
Here is a screenshot of a super 8mm film.
Tumblr media
Sex always be a mysterious topic in the human development history, people always feel shamed or embarrassed to talk about this, but actually this part is much more virtual relate to our life. I think we need to face this topic more and more naturally, and even build more related subjects to dig into that in the future.

16mm film exhibition  by Rowena and Virginia
Rowena and Virginia were holding an exhibition at Articulate Space on Parramatta road in Sydney in 2020, which i was lucky to have a look at that time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I majored in Master of Moving Image at the University of Sydney. Virginia and Rowena are our main teachers.
This exhibition was divided into three parts, 16mm experimental films, stop motion pictures and Installation arts. The 16mm experimental films are the most interesting part, they took the projector in front of the door, and the image would show on the door, whether you were in the indoor or outdoor, you could see it either.
The topic about the experimental film was how Covid-19 impacted our life in 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic was so cruel, it restricted our life in all kinds of ways, we could not do film production activities in normal days, every part about that should have had some strict rules that needed to be followed, which made some huge film companies bankrupt. Therefore, this disaster had put a question, what could filmmakers do in this special duration? These 16mm experimental films probably were the best answer for this question. These films have divided time into different intervals, which would tell us the time can be controlled. Whatever the pandemic is, how terrible it is to influence our life, we still can break through that to create something fun.
This was my first time to watch and close contact 16mm films, which would inspire me a lot of ideas about how to take advantage this technique to create some really abstract and postmodern film, i was really great full our teachers could give me this chance to learn this, it was an wonderful experience in my film life!

Rhythm Project
After week1-week5 study, cuz i have not received the 16mm film pocket, I need to choose the project form between stop motion and zoetrope. I start to do some research. when i see this following stop motion film, it inspires me a lot, which i decided to make a stop motion film for this project.
youtube
I think the most difficult part of creating a stop motion film is thinking a good theme. After watching this stop motion film, this LEGO character makes me wanna create a original character for my project. So i use 3D Maya to create a original character, you can see in this following picture. And i also design their appearances, and make it to become stickers, and put these stickers into their bodies. These characters will become acrobats, which will be my protagonist in this project.
Tumblr media
After i finish 3D printing my characters, i can start to do the photography. But before i show that, i just want to give your guys a simple explanation about why i want to design this character, cuz when i start to think my theme of this project, i just want to know if there have some art can represent my country or represent my own culture, which will be so meaningful ! The acrobatic will be the one , so i got this idea and start to design, cuz this is not only a traditional Chinese art form, but also few people know that especially for the foreigners.
Then i start to photography. This process will take a little bit longer, it needs to shot suitable and continuous photos, it costs me hundred times.
Tumblr media
The last step is put these photos into the stop motion app, and starts editing. Finding some suitable sound effect to do some soundtrack.
Tumblr media
Then upload it. It is my first time to do the stop motion film, it is a very interesting experience!
Here is this stop motion film! Hope you like it!

The difference between film and video
1. Box
Film needs to put some darkness places such us cinema or some private rooms. But the video seems not necessary to do that. Film may needs some ambient light to make the surrounding more cinematic, but video also seems not.
2. Image
Film colors has more fullness and saturation than video colors; For example, as for me, when i shot a film, i may use a Black-magic 6K camera or a RED mini camera,  both these cameras can shot 4-2-2 16bit, which means they have more color range to do the post-production, but when i shot a video, i probably use a Sony A7R3 camera is enough, this camera only can shot 4-2-0 10bit, which means has less color range to edit. By the way, when you shot a film, especially for the DOP, they may have their own shot style, but for the video, maybe not as that serious.
3. Light
Film light is a continuous, quickly-projected, of still images. But video not the same. For the mise on scene, film light will need to suit the tone of the whole movie, but for the video, the light is using to adjust the exposure.
4.Movement
Film use more complex camera movement than video, cuz film needs more visual effect among some cool camera movement, some camera movement just show 1s or 3s, but cost a lot, which will need some complex mechanism, but for video, it is not deserve to spend a lot of money to just finish some cool shot. For video, the most important part is its content.
5. Frame
Film has its special film frame, for video, the frame is a not important part. for me i prefer use 2.35:1 to shot a film.
In a word, we are filmmaker, we want to make films, cuz there has less chance to make dreams, but film can. Film is a art, it is the crystallization of imagination, creativity and perception.

Camera-less film i like
THE THIEVING HAND
by *CINÉASTE INCONNU·E - UNKNOWN FILMMAKER*
1907 / 35mm / b&w / sound / 1S / 6' 34
Firstly, LIGHTCONE is a good film website, which I was recommended by our teacher, where i can scan so many Camara-less films. To be honest, before i searched for that, i did not even know how wonderful Camera-less film could be. In my opinion, film always needed to be shot and use digital technique to edit to become the final one, but after i scan this i know film can be so colorful and can be any form. This really make me want to make some Camera-less film which can convey some abstract and postmodern idea in that.
Ok. Back to this topic, the film's narrative features make me unnaturally think of Derrida's "The Bike Stealer." But it's also about the thief, and the film is more surreal, with the "hands of thieves" relying on a broken-armer to complete the theft, making the people who own the thieves' hands a very funny theatrical conflict with the thieves. And the film's final "hands of thieves" when the thieves in prison, he succeeded in introducing the "hands of thieves" to others, which makes me think of Jim Jamusch's "the extralegial." Although the film is short, but the theme is clear, the drama conflicts constantly, at the same time has a strong irony, I like it very much!
