“Bibingkang Hipon” We all know that “bibingka” is a type of baked good made from rice flour It is usually topped with either salted egg, coconut meat or cheese or even brushed with butter. However, when it comes to Paete, Laguna the bibingka has a twist and which they call “bibingkang hipon” it is well known as the Paeteños favorite dish. The ingredients of bibingkang hipon can be easily be located in Paete. (Kamyas, gumaan, kamatis at hipon, dahon ng saging, sinamay at hurnohan. Pinaglagariang kahoy at bao ng niyog.)
Bibingka is served as snacks but with the addition of shrimp, it can be served as a dish. The advantage of Bibingkang Hipon is that it can be served as is or it can go with rice. It may sound unusual to people outside of Paete as it is not a custom for us to add shrimp to our bibingka but as a snack becoming well-known and liked by the people, it is surely a must-try dish for people with an adventurous palette for new flavors.

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna -- The Buhayani Festival, in honor of the life and works of Dr. Jose P. Rizal and the lives of everyday heroes, officially kicks off every year.
Themed “Buhay ng Bayani, Buhay na Bayani", the festival's start coincides with the city’s celebration of the Philippine Independence Day at the city hall lobby.
The City Cultural Affairs, Tourism, and Sports Development Division (CATSDD) said events and ceremonies are lined up for the week-long festival, in keeping with the ideals and teachings of the Calambeño compatriot and national hero.
The festival runs from June 12 to June 19, Rizal’s 157th birth anniversary.
The week-long festivities come between the two important dates for Filipinos. June 19 is a special non-working holiday in Calamba City, based on Proclamation No. 471 issued by Malacañang Palace.
Laguna 2nd District Rep. Joaquin M. Chipeco Jr., who graced the opening rites, told city officials and multi-sector groups that the “Buhayani Festival” officially begins during the city’s observance of Independence Day, "an occasion that reflects the supreme sacrifice and unequalled love of country by our heroes, among them Calambeño compatriot and National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal, in their own difficult ways to bring us freedom that all of us now enjoy”.
Chipeco described the annual celebration as “distinct". He said a review on Rizal’s life and works would reveal that the national hero never advocated a bloody fight, but a peaceful path towards justice and equal rights for all Filipinos.
“We in government have a lot to learn from Rizal’s life, views, idealism, and works, which could be applied in our time--the auspicious time for change. That as we tread the path for development, it is important that our collective wisdom and decisions are based on justice for all and the general welfare for all constituents,” he declared. He said if Rizal believed in the unity and solidarity among Filipinos to address the pangs of foreign subjugation and oppression, the same spirit of cooperation should guide Filipinos at present to advance the government’s programs and achieve development for all.

At Paete, we celebrate Paet-Taka Festival which was a recent invention and institutionalisation, following the country’s trend of creating festivals. Paete’s festival started in 2002 with the first Ukit-Taka Festival, held in mid-February, but this lasted a few years. Then, another festival was created in 2013, the Paet-Taka Festival, focusing on two traditions or crafts the town is famous for—wood craving and papier-mâché crafts.
The last two days of the Festival were mostly the major events. On Saturday night, a beauty pageant was mounted at the town plaza. Beauty pageants are fixtures in any Philippine fiesta or festival. The highlight of the Paet-Taka Festival, as with any festival, was the street dancing parade and competition. All of the barangays has their own entry. The vehicle was dressed to serve as carriages traditionally for religious images, using paper mache showing the town’s cultural icons. The event continued into the night that even rain could not dampen the spirit and colors of Paete.

Hambujan Festival Hambujan Festival is celebrated annually in the Municipality of Dolores, Quezon. This is celebrated every month of April. This festival was named after the place called Sitio Hambujan. The place is now called Sta. Lucia. Hambujan came form the word hambo which means “basaan”.
There are many events that is made in order to celebrate it. There is cultural night where senior citizens, and youths showcase their talents. On that night, there’s also a portion where they award “Natatanging Mamamayan ng Dolores”. On the next days, there will be street dancing, ritual dance, and pageant for male, female, and LGBTQ++. The last day I think is the happiest because there will be a street party wherein you’ll be able to socialize to other Doloresins. All of them are open to have a conversation with you. Ofcourse this party is safe because there are many police around the arena where the street party is happening.
Many people think that Hambujan is just about “basaan” but this festival is celebrated and also has a ceremony wherein we accept tourists who came from other places to celebrate the festival. This became the bridge or an act showing that we value their presence and this will strengthen the unity between us.

One of the oldest and most visited church here in the Philippines is the Saint John the Baptist Church here in Calamba, Laguna or commonly known as Calamba Church even though it’s not the only church here in Calamba. So, this church being called as Calamba Church says a lot.
Not many people would know but this church that was built in 1859, has been destroyed on February 12, 1945 during the Second World War. The reconstruction of the church of Calamba was headed by Father Eliseo Dimaculangan. The original altar was burned in 1862 but immediately rebuilt by Father Leoncio Lopez. You would see these facts once you visit the church itself as they would like people to know the history of the said church. The next information that I would write would also blow your mind.
I would say that this church is an old witness of the Philippines history. The house of our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal was just across the street. The church baptistery, where Rizal was baptized on June 22, 1861 by the then parish priest of Calamba Father Rufino Collantes and his godfather Father Pedro Casanas is a recognized National Historical Landmark. The declaration was made by virtue of Resolution No. 2 of the Philippine Historical Commission (now National Historical Commission of the Philippines) on August 19, 1976. A transcript of Rizal's existing baptismal record is displayed on the left side of the baptistery entrance. The original baptismal records including the canonical books were lost on September 28, 1862 when Calamba Church was burned during the World War II. Interesting, right?
Aside from these facts, going to St. John the Baptist Church is super accessible and the restaurants outside the church have been the attraction to many people to spend their Sunday blast in the family. My boyfriend’s family often go here almost every Sunday and I would suggest for you guys to attend the mass in the morning so you’ll also be able to see the beauty of this historical church. In the photos below, you’ll see how vintage looking the church is as well how taken cared of it was by the community.

As a resident of Paete, a town in the fourth district of the Province of Laguna, I’ve witnessed a flabbergasting place; The Saint James Apostle Parish Church, which was first built in 1646, and was re-established because of  earthquakes in the year 1717, 1880, and 1930.
The Church was named after the Patron, Saint James the Apostle and he celebrates his feast every 25th day of July. It is usual that Patrons and Saints have their Feasts, we all know that, specially if you’re a Catholic.
The Church was made of Adobe bricks, a mixture of egg white, and other native materials. The church has an elaborate baroque style with a fusion of oriental artistry. Inside the church, you will see old century wood paintings which was made by the natives, among them were Bartolome Palatino and Francisco Macahumpan.
Paete is also a pilgrimage site. One of the primary products of the town’s woodcarving industry are carving of pu-on or images of saints, and other creative handicrafts that can only be seen in their town.
St. Anthony the Abbot is a secondary patron of the town and his feast is celebrated by the townsfolk every January 17. The patron has a stone chapel locally known as Ermita as a shrine dedicated to him. There is a town legend related to the saint where a town native sneaked in the chapel during a conflagration and took a statue the St. Anthony to bathe it in the river. Following this, it began to rain and the fire was extinguished, an event considered as a miracle by the townsfolk.
The Catholic Church celebrates many traditions. Like the Lenten and the Holy Week. At Paete, the owners of privately owned religious images that were handed down from generations put up an exhibit of their religious icons on the church’s hall. The collection of images is one of the largest collection of images depicting the passion of Christ, and this exhibit usually ran from Ash Wednesday up to Holy Monday. They also have procession of their poon around the town from Holy Wednesday up to Good Friday.
People practiced these traditions and was passed by generations. Everyone has a part. Everything matters. You may not see it now but someday that’s gonna leave a mark.

The National Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows is located at the foot of Mt. Banahaw. This is a popular religious site among the residents of Quezon Province. The first church was made with sand, lime, stones, and egg whites. The first church was burned down during the Filipino-American war but the brick and stone walls survived. As time passed by, this church has many improvements. In year 1999, a museum was established at the right side of the church. There were many colorful vestments of Blessed Virgin Mary, relics, and antique chalices.
As time passed by, Our Lady of Sorrows shrine became the place where there pilgrims really visit. Because of this and the improvements, Our Lady of Sorrows Shrine was declared as a national shrine on 2017. This was oficially declared by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President named Archbishop Socrates B. Villegas with the Dioces of Lucena Bishop Emilio Z. Marquez and also joined to other 20 bishops. This last September 15 was this Shrine's feast day and the people that joined Turumba de Dolores was really many compared to the other years. This shrine also helped the tourism of the town of Dolores. Many restaurants and shops have been built near the church because there are many pilgrims that visits there.
