Confirmation on Yuki’s MC Status & That Scene (Handshake) - Furuba Spoilers
Tumblr media
I’m so glad that we have this text from Fruits Basket Another Volume 4 (English Translation). It’s from the note that Takaya-sensei wrote for Season 1 Volume 2 of the DVD/BDs. The transcript is as follows:
When it comes to covers, Tohru-kun comes first, and it’s fair to say that Yuki-kun will always be second. I did that on purpose, because Yuki-kun is the other main character carrying the theme of Fruits Basket on his shoulders…or that’s one reason.
Another big reason is that the first scene I thought of when I came up with Fruits Basket is the scene at the end with Tohru-kun and Yuki-kun. But of course every character is the main character of something.
I hop you’ll watch over Yuki-kun as he fumbles around, reclaiming his real self one step at a time, and learns to grow. Congratulations on the release of Volume 2!
Even though a lot of this information has been said before about Yuki, it’s nice to see it all here in one spot. It makes it really convenient when someone tries to argue otherwise or tries to pull the whole “Yuki’s bond with Tohru was romantic, but then Takaya-sensei decided to go a platonic route instead” kinda stuff. Now we have it stated very cleanly, clearly, and blankly that that isn’t the case, along with confirmation that she does, indeed, see him as the other main character.

Just a heads up, there’s a good possibility I’ll be reblogging or posting things from season 3 of His Dark Materials in the coming days and weeks. They won’t be spoiler free. If you’re trying to avoid spoilers (or just the show), I’ll be tagging those with #His Dark Materials. This is a series I have loved for a very long time, so I’m excited about the final season of the adaptation.

Okay, so I was watching the newest reaction (S1, E9) by the youtuber A Goodwin TV, and I was thinking about how Tohru never really “helped” Haru. Yuki was the one that helped Haru, and this makes sense, because Haru is a very similar character to Tohru. Rin often compares the two to each other, and Haru is more so a character for *Yuki’s* side of the story, rather than Tohru’s side. The same goes for Ayame, right, he is more for Yuki’s side of the story, though there is some more crossover there, since Tohru helps him. But, Ayame is also “family,” being Yuki’s brother, so that makes for an interesting connection and difference there.
Other characters that Tohru never helps are: Momiji (he helps her), Kisa (I feel Yuki is the one that really helps Kisa, Tohru’s words do help and Kisa does reach out to her, but I feel Tohru’s words and advice help Kisa’s *mother* more so than Kisa), and Shigure (instead, he uses her). The roles that these characters (Haru, Momiji, Kisa, and Shigure) play are rather interesting too.
Haru is more for Yuki’s story, as stated. He’s already gotten his “help” from Yuki and had feelings for Yuki. Yuki was Haru’s first love, like how Tohru is Momiji’s first love. And Momiji is shown helping Tohru out in the way that we see Haru doing for Yuki throughout the series.
Kisa, meanwhile, is like a mixture of Yuki and Tohru. Both Yuki and Tohru see a part of themselves in Kisa. Both Hiro and Kisa kinda represent the future potential that comes when breaking a cycle of abuse. Yes, they did both experience trauma, but they are also the only two in the series that end up getting to experience high school without any limitations due to the Curse. Since Kisa is like a mix of a mini version of both Yuki and Tohru, it then makes sense why it requires the help of both Tohru (giving advice to Kisa’s mother) and Yuki (giving advice directly to Kisa) in order for her to start healing.
Then, lastly, we have Shigure, who uses Tohru, and is the love interest of Akito, who is Tohru’s foil - the darkness to Tohru’s light, right. So it makes sense then that Tohru really wouldn’t be able to help Shigure (in the way of like helping him to “heal” like the others). She does end up helping him, but in a way that he had sorta kinda planned and in a way that was still on his terms. He takes advantage. But, like I stated, this fits with his role as the love interest for Akito and Tohru’s foil. Akito and Shigure exemplify selfishness (Akito always asking for the mooon, Shigure wanting Akito all to himself) while Torhu and her love interest, Kyo, exemplify selflessness (Tohru never asking for the moon, Kyo telling Tohru that he would support her if she found a boyfriend that - that wasn’t him).
This post all stemmed from me realizing that both Momiji and Haru (who are also both a year younger and in the same class at school too) play similar roles in Tohru and Yuki’s stories. Then it kinda grew from there adding in Kisa and then Shigure. Those two weren’t originally planned, lol. But, I gotta wrap this up in general (not only because it is starting to lose focus, but also because I have to start getting ready for work). If you have anything you want to add to this though, please feel free to do so! :D

Me over here still wondering why this was in the first ending of the first season and not the second ending of the second season. I have been questioning this since the first episode aired. They really just snuck that scene in from the get go.

“Yuki’s hands are so clumsy that he can’t even fold paper cranes.“ (Fruits Basket Fan Book: Cat) -headcanon: Yuki’s paperflowers were terrible.
I was practising with a simpler style this time.

Note
Ace culture is wishing people would take a step back from "this character doesn't show interest in a romantic/sexual relationship with the opposite sex (but also hasn't ever shown interest in the same sex) so they're obviously gay and anyone who says otherwise is a homophobe". Guys, it's great to have headcanons about characters (especially if they have canon queer subtext), but someone not agreeing with those headcanons isn't automatically a homophobe - especially if the not agreeing is to hc the character as another queer identity that the evidence points to just as well as gay.
