it's kinda comforting to me when my friends are a little annoying or longwinded or abrasive or tired and inarticulate, or they don't do the exact politest thing in every interaction, and stuff, because I know I'm sometimes annoying, or take up a more than my share of conversational space, or forget to ask them questions, etc etc, and... like, I'm always working to be nice to my friends and to get better and better at friend-ing, but it just makes me feel more human about it :}

anyway I love you friends plz know I'm not counting, in fact I feel great affection toward you even (especially) when conversations go less than Perfectly Ideal

#never ever for me #extremely taboo in my family bc my grandfather died of lung cancer #it was the sort of thing that left a big scar for the whole family #like we're talking 4 grandkids named after him #and i think my grandmother is secretly peeved that my kids aren't named after him?? but it's fine #my friends didn't smoke and no one i knew who smoked ever pressured me either #then i was a woodwind player so i didn't want to smoke bc of that #and then i had birds so i didn't smoke bc of that #and now i have kids so i don't smoke bc of that #nicotine is so addictive that i refuse to judge anyone who does smoke #at least i won't judge them for not quitting #i'll probably judge if someone is being rude about it but i'd do that for anyone being rude

this is purely for fun and I've certainly been guilty of a few of these things myself in my years of fic writing. don't be weird in the notes and don't use this as an excuse to insult someone's writing.

#okay so almost all of them #but if i have to pick from the list #overuse of gasping #there was a book i'd been dying to read for months and months #was so disappointed when i couldn't get an arc and then had to wait forever on the library waitlist #and every other sentence had the female protag gasping #orbs is also annoying but i don't usually encounter it in the wild #and everything else is irritating #but nothing as bad as gasping every other sentence

between hadestown and supergiant's hades, i'm realizing i vastly prefer modern stories about hades and persephone if they're estranged and on the verge of divorce. it's no longer "ah how do they fall in love?" it's "oh how do you live with someone you love forever?" their love is given fact, it created the seasons; it's when that love starts fraying that their stories come back into relevance. what is a relationship like when you've been tied together so long you are part of each other, and nature fractures when you're apart?

i've always loved when the gods are not just gods, but fully anthropomorphized forces of nature given fickle human tendencies, and i feel a lot of modern retellings are more focused on how to untangle the tangles of the olympian family tree and not what really matters: your divorce proceedings having a body count
