"That's why it's very important we make sure he's well fed, since we don't have any humans living with us it's not to hard to make sure Steven remains calm, but we have to make sure Greg is fully protected if he were to visit since if Steven were to smell blood... we're not sure what would happen, but Steven's gem half had mentioned that the smell of blood makes him more ... prone to attack."

"Ok, fine. The night after Steven came home, I found his clothes covered in blood... when I asked what had happened, he just told me that I shouldn't worry because it wasn't his..."

Pearl explained, "The next morning there was reports on the news that four farms worth of livestock were massacred by some beast... and one horse looked like they had gotten bitten... and Steven has no memory of what he told me the night he came home covered in blood... soon we discovered that normal food didn't taste right to him any more... and so far he's just been eating the meat raw from the fridge...but because of the fact he's aware of how he had eaten four farms worth of livestock.... he was afraid that he could accidently hurt someone if he wasn't careful."

"There is a reason why Steven was very scared to leave the house... and it's not only because of how he had gotten hurt... it was because he's afraid he'd hurt others..." Pearl was quiet, before looking down, "When Steven was hurt... his gem had separated from his body... his gem half could see how Steven's ...accident affected everyone... so he took it upon himself to heal him... however Rose's healing powers never had this sort of side effect, and Steven's gem, never told us how he fixed the problem... but now we have a bigger one to deal with."

"... what happened with Steven is the reason why we had to put up a new fence..." Pearl replied with a heavy sigh. "... Steven... isn't the same as he used to be... I mean he's still his loveable self but ... there's something very wrong..."

"Spinel, have you gone into town to meet any of the townsfolk or did you mainly stay in the house?" Pearl asked needing to know how she was to break the news to her about Steven's new diet.

Pearl held her eyes and held the other close for a moment before pulling away. "Thank you... I'm sure she would have a appreciated that..."

"While we were at the cottage... Garnet, Amethyst, Greg and I were busy with setting up the house for the stay of our vacation while Steven was alone outside fixated on his phone... at the time we had no idea that he was worried that if he couldn't fix his relationship with his friend Connie, that he thought we'd be upset with him... and at some point he noticed that his phone wasn't getting service.... and in an attempt to search for that service to hopefully get a hold of Connie, Steven had gotten into a terrible accident... and gotten hurt... very badly... and for a gem as long as the gem wasn't cracked or damaged it wouldn't be a problem... but Steven is half human... or was." Pearl took a deep heavy breath, she couldn't say out right that he died, or that he had gotten run over, but it was clear something bad happened to Steven, and Pearl wept into Spinel's shoulder.

"It's all my fault if I wasn't pre-occupied with Party Guy, Steven would have been ok... he wouldn't be like this."

Pearl shook her head, "No. None of homeworld knew of what she did... and Gems don't have children like humans do so to them Steven is just a form she's taking to hide from the things she's done... and not that he's his own person." Pearl took a deep breath. She shook he head and refocused herself.

"Things only got worse after Steven had gotten home, so Steven's father and the rest of us decided that Steven deserved a break from worrying about gem things for a while... so we got this little rental cottage up north in Maine." Pearl stroked her thumb over Spinel's hand, she looked down, her thoughts were only on that cursed place down that busy road, it hurt to revisit the memories but it was necessary that Spinel understand the situation fully before she fully moved in, despite already having a room in the temple, Spinel's room hadn't been customized to Spinel tastes just yet.

Pearl returned Spinel's hug softly whimpering at the other question and nodded as she opened the temple behind her ushering Spinel to follow, since she's positive the boys would be find in the living room alone for a few moments.

Once inside the temple, Pearl summons a couple of chairs for them to sit on. "A few months ago, Steven had given himself up to homeworld to deal with the punishment his mother would have had if she were still around."

'Human' Steven smiled back a bit and nodded, hugging the other in a way to where his slightly malformed skull was on the opposite side so she wouldn't feel it, he kept some distance away from his chest just incase the other could feel the scars from his autopsy through his shirt, however he didn't take into account that if she were to pet on his head, she'd feel the staples from when they had cut his head open.

Pink Steven looked over toward Pearl, his monotone voice and his expressionless gaze not giving away his thoughts on the situation, but his words clearly giving the impression he wants things to go back to normal and sooner rather than later. "When is she leaving?" He asked point blank. Pearl looked back, "She's not leaving, she's moving in with us." Pink Steven blinked, "Why, because she's "been through a lot"?" He used quotation marks to indicate what his tone could not. "Steven, I know that you and Steven have been through a lot, I won't argue that, but Spinel has been through a lot too." "Sitting and standing around for 1000s of years waiting for someone doesn't seem like a lot compared to being run over like you were a deer in headlights with no time to react." Pink Steven replied.

"Steven! She's staying here, and that's that... we already made a room for her... please just be more welcoming with her?" "Why should I?... she hardly acknowledges that I'm even a person... she only ever talks to Steven... I'm sure she hates me..."

"Spinel doesn't hate you... she's just not aware of the situation yet... and I told her when we got back that I'd explain everything after you kids had gone to bed... did either of you explain anything to her?"

"No, neither of us did. We just played games to keep her entertained... She doesn't like talking to me, and Steven doesn't want to scare her, in fact, he lied about it raining outside all week because he didn't want to leave the house just in case he'd go feral and hurt someone and make her think he's a monster." Pink Steven replied.

'Human' Steven carefully put the package of raw ground beef into the fridge, then washed his hands and face. "I mean I really only have video games and they are just a bunch of single players except this one Lonely Blade spin off game where it's kinda like a fighting game for two players..."
