GOD AU AFFINITY SYSTEM EXPLANATION

there are five types of affinities:

-water

-stone

-plant

-electric

-fire

they're all caused by a large amount of "Innate energy," something that all animals possess. however, only humans and conscious beasts (aka humanoid races) have been known to amass enough innate energy to manifest affinities. it can best be described as a soul, or i would more accurately say, a "will to live"

1 in 50 people possess an affinity, but the majority are relatively weak. only people with exceptional levels of Innate energy will develop the anywhere close to high level elemental techniques that the gods that are our main characters use.

the reason that every god is an exceptionally high level affinity user is in part connected to the nature of godhood, with it being attained by a blessing of Light energy. Light energy provides a massive buff to Innate energy, which in turn results in a stronger affinity.

some people develop a "sub-affinity," which are weaker affinities that exist alongside a primary, strong affinity; however, the development of a sub-affinity doesn't have anything to do with the amount of Innate energy that one possesses. it more so has to do with the character of the user, as the "nature" or "energy imprint" of one's innate energy affects what affinity is developed. this nature or energy imprint also determines personality!

affinities can have different subtypes or specialized techniques that their user may be more suited to. these are:

water- ice, healing, constructs

stone- metal, soil, gemstone location

electric- light, weather manipulation, energy reading

plant- harvest, plant-seeing

fire- combustion

Supposedly, affinities were linked to the personalities of the person who wielded them. Water affinities were adaptable, electric were strong, fire were passionate. If this really was the case, then it made perfect sense for Mochi to be stone.

They remembered the day that their kingdom fell like it was yesterday. Even though they had fought valiantly, they refused to risk any more civilian deaths after becoming the head of state halfway through the battle- only so much death can be handled by a people, after all. The legs of their pants had been soaked in blood when they stumbled away from the castle, exiled only hours after surrender. It was a sacrifice that they had to make, to protect their people. In shock, filled with grief, and their head spinning- this is the state that they had been in when Green and Takeover found them. They didn’t even realize that they had been made a god until the two gods of Luminport had told them.

A year later, Green had Mochi’s royal regalia reproduced for their birthday- the original was to torn to wear, but they had insisted on wearing it anyways. On some level, they would always be the crown prince of Apophyllite. That is what loyalty meant to them- standing by the side of who they cared for, doing what was best for them. Sometimes what’s best is letting The Kingdom of Apophyllite become another nation, one ruled by a god. A kingdom ruled by mortals would have always been weak. Sometimes what’s best is watching Takeover sitting with her book, on the very far right of the couch as if Green would somehow, miraculously show up and sit beside her. Someone with such a long life would naturally grieve on a different timeline.

Mochi knew that Takeover had always thought that if any of the Tri-Colored gods were to die, it would be her. After all, she was the oldest- one of the oldest gods alive. Green had been her first tether to a life beyond the war that she was born into, unaware of any past before her godhood.

“A sword and a map was all I had,” she had told them. She didn’t even know her own name- the alias of “Takeover” had come from the inscription on her sword.

Her desire to have a co-ruler had come from a desire to not leave her people alone in the event of her death. “Green… you and Green were always supposed to be the ones who survived,” is what she had whispered the night that Green had died. “Perennial as a plant, steady as stone… lightning is the ephemeral one.”

Her eyes had looked so tired.

“Why don’t you go get some rest,” was all they could muster as a response.

It was then that they decided, out of loyalty to Green, that they would give Takeover a break, no matter how badly they were still shaking just thinking about watching that explosion of light, the way that they had lost hundreds of years of friendship in an instant. That was the consequences of forbidden knowledge. That’s why Takeover was the goddess of wisdom, they supposed. Knowing when to stop- Green had never quite mastered that skill. Fey were the type to push until the very end. So here Mochi and Takeover were, dealing with the consequences.

It was, even after all these years, difficult to accept that fey were gone for good. Takeover hadn’t been the same ever since- her lively side had died down, and the stoicism that had always been present had taken over. While she slept through the days, Mochi had thrown themself into keeping the nation running, keeping the people happy, the festival lights brightening every year like clockwork. They wandered the streets, dressed like a human, blending in successfully. Every once in a while, Takeover teased them about their love of “playing dress-up” in the city. Her two-toned eyes almost looked like they did before Green’s death in moments like that.

Maybe she needed a distraction. She looked a bit brighter whenever she was playing with Biscuit, or sorting through Mochi’s newest human goods.

When they received a letter in a bottle from a sea god, they knew they had stumbled upon a good distraction for her. A “diplomatic general” to meet the gods and stay in the city… she would at least enjoy herself fighting them, if nothing else. Mochi had never been the fighting type- they preferred the logistics side of things. When she entertained Takeover in spars, she always ended up looking bored. A change of pace would be good for her.

Steady as stone- that’s what their affinity was about. Even if they were nervous, even if something went wrong, they would be there for Takeover. Their loyalty was boundless- they thought that must’ve been why they were blessed with godhood. A bond that was unchanging, forever.
