Perception Kayaks
Perception Kayaks seek to bring the full kayaking experience to a variety of customers. Whether you're into fishing, fun, or serious water sports, Perception has the right kayak for you. Picking the right kayak isn't a whatever floats your boat kind of thing though, and not all models will suit you or your experience, especially when it comes to pedal kayaks.
Each kayak is designed for a specific range of weather conditions and activities. Within the Perception range, you will find professional kayaks alongside recreational kayaks, allowing both seasoned kayakers and beginners to take advantage of a vast array of kayaking possibilities. Accessorising your kayak to fit you, your style and your comfort needs are easy with Perceptions assortment of paddles, straps, mounts and transportation equipment. With these at your disposal, you can kit out your kayak completely before you even hit the water.
A company geared toward finding you the perfect kayak, Perception have several models available that offer slight alterations on their common design. Made for kayakers of all different skill levels, you will find options for those who are taller, lighter, heavier or smaller, all in one place. It doesn't take long to find exactly what you're looking for, as all available models are categorized according to their purpose and tailored abilities. Part of Perceptions distinctive range is their heralded pedal kayaks, built especially for aquatic expeditions. Here we discuss the good and the bad of two of our favorite pedal kayaks on the market: the Pescador Pro 10, and the Pescador Pilot 12.
Perception Pescador Pro 10 Review
Pros:  A sit-on fishing pedal kayak, this boat cuts a fine figure on the water. The superior stability allows you to get your catch in the highest-density areas of any body of water and gives you the slow, smooth stealth you need. Shorter in length than the Pilot, the Pro is more easily maneuverable and can be stacked on top of your car with ease. The Pro offers a great time for those who love pedal fishing but are new to kayaking. Stable and speedy, it can cover the distance and won't let you topple in and join your finned friends.
Cons:  The Pro can be difficult to handle and stabilize if you are on the heavier side, and only has paddle holders installed in the left side, which may become a nuisance if using an anchor trolley on this side of the kayak. The Pro doesn't come with the efficiency and maneuverability of a whitewater kayak, but this is purely due to the purpose of its design. The Pros seat doesn't suit all kayakers, and some adjustments may need to be made or the seat entirely replaced should the angle or thickness of the seat prove uncomfortable. While the Pro does have useful bungee straps to make your fishing gear easily portable, it does not come with much room for extra storage and is not as suited to longer day trips as the Pilot. The difference between the two Perception models largely revolves around their purpose, one being a professional pedal kayak while the other is suited to beginners.

Perception Pescador Pilot 12 Review
Pros: The Pescador Pilot pedal kayak is comfortably fitted with a roomy chair to accommodate you adequately and allow you to maximize your fishing fun. The Pilot, unlike the pro, is a pedal kayak design, and the best among its rivals. For a fishing aficionado, it provides a two-hands-free experience that is perfect for setup, baiting, and catching your perfect fish. The zonal mesh prevents the seat from accumulating sweat throughout the day, a common problem for most intensive fishing trips. Cast away your line while standing, and the Pilot will remain stable. Be sure not to lean too far out!
Cons: As the Pilot is a sleeker pedal kayak model than the Pro, stability can be compromised. This is a small price to pay for the lesser weight and stealth abilities the fishing kayak can provide. The pedal drive can produce some noise while using, which can distract those out for a quiet day on the lake. If you're like for absolute peace and a slow glide, you may want to opt for the Pro instead. The plastic molding may bend under the weight of heavy fishing gear, so if you're loading up for a grand day out, youâ€
Tumblr media
ll want to distribute it evenly in different packs or look for a thicker-shelled model. The price of the Pilot has received some criticism, though many agree this kayak is more than worth its marketed value.

When it comes down to finding the right kayak for you paddles are quickly being replaced with the newer and more innovative option this option is the pedal kayak. There are a ton of different benefits that come with choosing a pedal kayak instead of a paddle kayak. One of the apparent benefits being you can use your hands and are not restricted to using them for pedals. Go ahead and grab that fishing rod and start paddling. We’re going to go through and discuss why pedal kayaks are the best option and why you need one.
The different characteristics of a pedal kayak
Pedal kayaks provide you with the benefit of being able to take your time on the water without the extra effort. The installed pedals allow you to use your feet and legs to move the kayak instead of using your hands which takes away a substantial amount of energy.
How do they work?
Underneath the hull of a pedal kayak, there are foot pedals and a fin or a propeller which allow the kayak to be able to be powered by your feet. Using this mechanism, you can go ahead and move freely across the water and use both hands to fish, photograph, or relax and enjoy the scenery. A pedal driven kayak is an advanced type of kayak and a new growing favorite way to enjoy the waters while you fish.

Why you need to purchase a pedal kayak
Fishing
Pedal kayaks are famous for being used for fishing because they allow you to have a hands-free experience and some of them will enable you to reverse and continue to move while you are reeling in your catch. Pedal kayaks are essential for fishing and are often made broader and firmer to make sure that you do not tip over while you’re in them. A bonus with many pedal kayaks is the fact that lots of them offer the option of being able to stand in the kayak.
Comfort
The seating inside of a pedal kayak is substantial and of high quality and comes with features to make sure that you are comfortable justifying the price of the pedal kayak. Depending on the type of pedal kayak you choose you will usually have adjustable seating which will allow for a more elevated height than a traditional kayak. Also, the extended width of the kayak provides increased stability in the water and decreases the probability of you capsizing.
Equipment space
Pedal kayaks usually come with a significant amount of extra space because they are meant for fishing. This extra space allows you to store extra tackle and lures within it without having to worry whether you run out of storage or having to customize and build a cooler for your kayak.

What to look for when buying
Since you can see there are a lot of different pedal kayaks and pedal kayak brands to choose from a question then becomes how do I choose the best pedal kayak that fits my requirements? You want to be sure that you are selecting a pedal kayak that suits your exact needs and that the kayak has all the features that are going to maximize your experience. We have put together a list of what to look for when purchasing.
Stability and control
Stability and control is an essential requirement when picking almost any kayak to buy. With pedal kayaks, this is a little bit different because many pedal kayaks are built for stability and control. However, there are still some things you need to look. Even though conventional kayaks are much easier to get a handle on in the beginning pedal kayaks become easier to control once you reach a comfort level. Because you don’t have a pedal to steer the kayak, you get used to using a rudder when using the kayak. The rudder allows you to steer better and control your kayak and helps you guide it where you want to go. Pedal kayaks are created to be wider to reduce the danger of losing control and capsizing.
Tracking and turning
Pedal kayaks are created to be wider for stability reasons and because of this wideness the diameter of the pedal kayak is also increased. Because they use pedals to move the kayak and there is no paddle available for steering you become accustomed to using a rudder. A rudder is a fin-like device that goes underneath your kayak which you control with your arm moving a leaver that is attached to the rudder. The use of moving this rudder left and right actually makes the kayak significantly slower when pedaling however after a short amount of time you become accustomed to using the rudder and your efficiency will go up.
Push pedal versus rotational pedal
When choosing a pedal kayak, you need to be aware of the two different types of pedals available. There is the push pedal and the rotational. Both of these work differently mechanically, and each has an advantage over the other however both are great in and of themselves.
Push pedal
With the push pedal kayak you use your feet to push on the pedals moving forward to obtain speed, and it takes a few attempts to recover your speed after stopping you need to be pedaling continuously, or the kayak stops completely. This movement may become dull after a while when you are on extended outings and for protracted periods of time. Depending on your strength and agility it may or may not be an appropriate option for you though it is faster than a rotational pedal it requires more energy.
Rotational pedal
Unlike the push pedal, the rotational pedal utilizes the use of your whole leg instead of your feet. The performance of the rotational pedal is much like riding a bike. There isn’t as much strain from the body when using the rotational pedal since your legs are doing most of the work, and the pedals are rotating giving the rotational pedal kayak some momentum, unlike the push pedal kayak where if you stop there is no momentum.
Transportation
You need to think about transport when you have a pedal kayak these kayaks are much heavier than regular kayaks and have some additional considerations for transport. A lot of people are scared that the pedal mechanism at the bottom of the kayak will track over the sand and dirt and become broken however many of these pedal kayaks come with the ability to retract the pedal system as you are coming to shore which allows you to easily store the pedal kayak and move it. For transporting the pedal kayak, we recommend a trailer that will allow you to mount it and carry it where it needs to go. Overall pedal kayaks are amazing. They are mostly built for fishing, however, don’t be fooled these are great for anything you want to use them for. You can even bring up the pedals and once your legs are tired switch to paddling the kayak to get that extra full body workout from it. We have covered many different models in this guide, and hopefully, this is helped you choose one if you like this article be sure to leave a comment below and tell us what you think.
