So back when I played Duel Links, I ran Ojama World Chalice for a bit. Mostly, the game was won using the World Chalice link monsters, but the Ojamas did win a few games on their own merits.
This was around the time that the Relinquished pack came out, and Ojama's were a weirdly strong match-up against them because that deck struggled against normal monsters in general, and Ojamas were too "weak" to make a decent steal target, but could manage to win the duel on their own if left alone. This scene is how I imagined these characters would act during those duels.

A bit late, but don't you love when unexpected card drops come 10years after the series has ended to prove your theory correct?
Tumblr media
Card name is Eternal Favorite, depicting Yubel embracing Judai after their fusion at the end of season 3.
Flame Wingman’s Demotion
In season 4 (ep 167), Judai calls Flame Wingman his favorite HERO, which is a change from how he normally addresses it as his favorite monster (last seen in ep151)
So it seems like Yubel took back the favorite card position once they reunited.

Yuya: We're Kaiba Corp's star dueling team. Yugi Muto, Normal summoning. If it's not real dueling, tell me all about it.
Yuma: Yusei Fudo. Synchro Summoning. A little patronizing, but mostly professional.
Yusaku: ...Judai Yuki. Fusion.
A redraw of this scene from My Adventures with Superman:

Different person, but I almost wrote an essay before on this, so might as well get it done.
To get him out of the way, if we take season 2 in a vacuum, I'd say it's probably Aster. He plays the rival role the most straightforwardly, and is the one who probably does the job of a rival of "sparking mutual growth through conflict" the best out of the three. The problem with him is his rivalry is confined to season 2 only. He's not in season one, and his conflict with Jaden over which one gets to be the "hero" is over at the end of the season and replaced with genuine gratitude. They are "rivals" in the same way Superman and Batman are "rivals" where, they had a rough start, and their personalities don't always mesh, but in the end they have a mutual appreciation for each other and similar values (all HERO users share a braincell).
Chazz is weird. As a whole GX is a series that really likes to play with tropes, and Chazz's arc is a big example of that where, he is initially set up to make it seem like he's going to be "The Rival" in the story of the rich elite kid vs the underdog, but in the end he ends up functionally going through a protagonist arc. I think Chazz's main issue is, not that he never beat Jaden, but that he never really gets Jaden to change through their "rivalry". To his credit, he tries. He has this whole "rival" speech ready to shake Jaden out of his depression after he lost the ability to see his cards, but it doesn't work. The problem Jaden was facing wasn't one a rivalry could solve and so it didn't. Chazz is a rival in the same way that Jaden is a protagonist. Both of them are subversions on the typical idea of the archetype, so in the end maybe they suit eachother.
Then there's Zane. He serves as a "dark mirror" type rival, similarly to Aster but a bit less obvious. Him and Jaden are both "gifted" kids who have difficulties trying to live up to expectations, and whose love of dueling gets tested because of this. Both of them are "Big Brother" figures to Syrus. And Zane actually does fulfill the "growth through conflict" requirement of a rival as his interactions with Jaden do force him to change as seen in the s1 finale and in how Zane's duel with Yubel was able to inspire Jaden to keep fighting. Stating it all like this, Zane seems the best fit, but the problem is that I don't think the two of them actually see each other as rivals. In the end, I think both of them realize that what the both of them want is for Syrus to be happy and to have a fun time playing cards and they both agree that the other person helps in accomplishing those goals and that the main issue is themselves.
Which I guess brings us to Jaden himself. As a character, he is a bit of a mess of contradictions and conflicting needs. He 's outgoing, friendly, genuinely wants to help people, and enjoys having friends. On the other hand, he has a habit of going off on his own, isn't comfortable in a crowd, and is bad at sharing his feelings and struggles with acting as a "team player". He overthinks and plays too safe when he's scared of the consequences, so he tends to act recklessly without regard for consequences because at least then he can convince himself to keep going. His character arc is about him trying to reconcile the various parts of himself to find a version that he's happy with. GX as a whole is a series about growing up, about taking the various parts of yourself, the good and the bad, and using them to make a better version of yourself. So in that sense, the person who Jaden has the most conflict with, and who drives Jaden's growth the most through that conflict is probably Jaden himself.
It's hard for me to decide, so in the end I feel it just comes down to merchandising lol. Wanna push a new HERO pack? Well I guess Aster's been the rival all along. For general marketing, it's Chazz or Zane depending on whether you feel Zane's "cool-ness" beats out Chazz's broad appeal for that instance. Sometimes throw Jesse in there, because why not. This is GX, there are no rules.
next up...
a preliminary for the YGO Rivals poll (1)

OP here with the answer below the cut. Honestly, did not think this would get as many responses as it did.
Tumblr media
I put the current results of what it looked like before the reveal under the cut as well both to keep a record and just in case Tumblr didn't cut it off soon enough for people who want to keep guessing.
And the answer is: Winged Kuriboh destroys a laser satellite.
I figured people who watched GX, even if they didn't know some of the more obscure events, would recognize that one was wrong.
As for people who didn't watch GX, yes I just altered an event that did happen in GX but consider... in the real version, the laser satellite is destroyed by the villain's digitized sister, Neos, and a dinosaur. And not a dinosaur card even, but the astral projection of a teen's dino-sona that he gained due to him having dinosaur dna from replacing one of his bones with a fossil.
Compared to that "Winged Kuriboh did it" sounds believable. Which is exactly why it did not happen. Congrats to @ris-d-deridex who figured it out for that exact reason.
Tumblr media
If anyone wants an explanation, short rundown of the other entries below:
Adrian/Amon does sacrifice someone to be able to draw the Exodia cards. It worked pretty well too.
Amnael played an alchemy deck and the steps of the creation of the philosophers stone (nigredo, albedo, citrinas, rubedo) were played in the correct order in card form. At the end of that duel, he gave the winner of the duel a card "Sabatiel - the Philosopher's Stone"
Camula, a minor villain in S1 revealed herself to be the last existing vampire and got killed in the same episode.
During the Darkness arc in season 4, we see lists of names fading as the people get spirited away. At the top of a list of Kaiba Corp employees, we see Kaiba's name which does not fade to signal his disappearance before the screen cuts away. So Kaiba at least manages to be one of the last people remaining in Domino city, and we never get a confirmation that he was ever taken away. This one's a bit hard to spot, so I really don't blame anyone for not getting it.
One of the dorm heads did have a cat. He did die. And if we believe Chazz/Manjoume, the cat is the one who ended up with the job as the school never bothered to replace him.
Truman vs O'Brien, a duel where Truman attempts to break O'Brien's will by bringing up traumatic memories of when he was forced to choose which parent he wanted to save after a car crash.
Lets give it up for Zane/Ryo and Aster/Edo who played the role of Master/Servant respectively during the supreme king arc.
Finally, its a fun bit of trivia that pops up every once in a while but Dio shares a voice actor with Sartorius/Saiou (Japanese voices). Saiou plays a deck based on Tarot, with one of the cards he plays being "Arcana Force XXI - The World" and he hams it up as much as you would expect when it gets summoned. GX also came before the JoJo anime, so it's probably less that GX was making a JoJo reference, and more that the voice actor for Dio had the perfect audition tape.
For people who did not watch Yugioh GX, all of the following happened, except for one.

Final Fantasy XIV and Yu-Gi-Oh Crossover.
More thoughts under the cut
The lore between the two series actually works pretty well with one another, as both deal with reincarnation and alternate dimensions. The way I see this crossover is having the Yu-Gi-Oh protagonists acting out  the plot of FFXIV. Yugi and his friends take on the plot of ARR, while Jaden and the cast of GX take on HW.
I chose Elezen for Yugi/Atem because of the puberty jokes primarily. I felt that Scholar/Summoner was good for the two of them because it’s two Jobs that branch out of the same class, which felt right for two people sharing the same body. Yugi gets the more support oriented class that takes strategy and preparation to play well because that style fits in well with how he duels. Yami-Yugi gets the class that can summon “gods” because that’s what he’s able to do in the series. I guess Joey and Tristian would be Hyurs, though I don’t know right now what jobs I’d give them. I like Tea as a Viera Dancer. Seto Kaiba would be a Garlean, no question. Originally I had him as a Cid replacement, but on reconsideration, he would be a great stand-in for Nero, especially with his “Notice-Me-Pharaoh” shtick.
Jaden gets Miqo'te because there’s a cat in GX and I wanted him as a shorter race since he doesn’t grow up to be that tall (he was thiiiis close to being a Lalafell). Dragoon is a meme class (that is actually really effective) so it fit well for Jaden who doesn’t take dueling all too seriously. It fits him in other ways as well, concerning his relationship with Yubel and the source of a Dragoon’s powers. Jaden will end up dual-classing into DRK at some point, to mirror his descent into Haou in GX. For the HW plot, Yubel would be Nidhogg and Jesse would stand in for Ysale (as the one who wants to bridge the gap between Ishgard and Dragons).
I want to continue this series if I don’t get too lazy with drawing some of the other characters mentioned plus a few more. The crossover would continue into 5ds with Yusei as an Au Ra Mechanist, and the rest of the cast of 5ds playing out the SB conflict.

Switch around meme with my sisters @pureconcentratedtrash-art (Angelina) and @pcturtl. We decided to use our OCs, but the only OC I really care about is my neopet lol. It’s so great seeing our different styles!
from left to right, top to bottom:

Ahh! Thank you! Always nice to see Timmy (Though I appreciate the shade you tried to throw on me with the Shiro attempts, hopefully now you understand my pain).

Late Christmas gifts for @pcturtl and @commanderpigg !
Merry Holidays and happy Christmas to ya guys! just as a disclaimer, the quality of each drawing does not signify any biases or favoritism, it’s just the fact theta my skill level just got better and better at each gift attempt (also the number of characters).
FUN FACTOID: @pcturtl ‘s gift was initially going to be Shiro from Voltron but I JUST CANT DRAW SHIRO AND I HAD TO DRAW THE GIFT ABOUT 4-5 TIMES AND I WAS KINDA D YING AND THEN I DREW @commanderpigg ‘s GIFT AND IT WAS MUCH BETTER THAN ALL THE SHIRO ONES COMBINED SO I HAD TO REDRAW THE ENTIRE FJUCkihnnhg  GIFTRCFGHJ. So I opted for drawing Tim Drake

SoRiku Soulmate AU
Sometimes I think of that soulmate AU where you have the first words of your soulmate on your wrist and I think of Sora and Riku, who have probably known each other since they were babies, and how their soul mark would be some sort of baby babble.

Just realized Symmetra’s “Huge Success” Trophy is a Portal reference
Lyrics for “Still Alive,” the ending song for Portal has the lines:
This was a Triumph
I’m making a note here
HUGE SUCCESS
And you get the Trophy for teleporting 20 people (corresponding with how there are 20 test chambers in the original Portal game). The name of this achievement was bothering me for some time because I kept thinking it sounded familiar but I couldn’t place from where. Ah I feel so stupid now.

After seeing all the fatewap!au art of Luna, I couldn’t help but think of Oracle!Noctis. In the first place, how would he even get out of the empire’s clutches long enough to do his duty? Luna only managed through sheer determination, the likes of which Noctis (especially a Noctis who knows fulfilling his duty as Oracle will lead to the death of one of the people he cares for) isn’t really capable of.
Which brought about the idea that Noctis just walked out. Let’s face it, the boy probably has his big brother Ravus wrapped around his finger and after years of good behavior and showing complete disinterest in awakening the gods for so long, no one suspected Noctis might have a change of heart and get his lazy ass into gear.

Gekkan Shojou Nozaki-kun is what you get if you fill the cast of a Shojou manga with ace/aro characters
I honestly believe that most the cast of Gekkan Shojou Nozaki-kun is somewhere on the ace/aro spectrum. Nozaki is an aromantic who loves the aesthetic of romance despite never experiencing it for himself, Wakamatsu is asexual, Seo is a romance repulsed aromantic, Mikoshiba is probably demi-sexual. I haven’t pinned down exactly where Hori and Kashima lie on either spectrum, but I get the feeling they’re not fully romantic/sexual people either. In fact, out of the 7 leads, in my mind Sakura is probably the only one of them who’s not either ace or aro to some degree.
But the fact that I see them as ace/aro doesn’t mean I don’t ship them together. Because “ship” is short for relationship, and there are so many other ways for two characters to show that they care for each other, that they enjoy the other’s company, that they think the other is one of the most important things in their life than showing them in a romantic/sexual relationship. In fact, this is one of the things I believe Gekkan Shojou Nozaki-kun does the best and what I enjoy the most about the series.
Hori is literally everything to Kashima, being the person who comes to mind when thinking of a romantic partner, a rival, a mother and a pet puppy. In turn, Hori is invested in seeing Kashima shine, and wants to spend time with her. They both center a lot of their motivations around the other person, even without having a traditional romance.
One of the reasons Sakura doesn’t want to confess is because she’s genuinely happy spending time with Nozaki, and Nozaki is genuinely happy spending time with Sakura. And honestly, that’s more than enough. For me, I feel that Sakura also loves the idea of romance and sees a romance with Nozaki as a bonus, but not the only thing she wants or is getting out of their relationship together.
Seo and Wakamatsu are honestly a mess, but the good kind. It’s been shown they spend a lot of time together, despite not labeling their relationship something keeps the both of them coming back for more. Wakamatsu has said repeatedly that he doesn’t like Seo’s personality, but has shown that he likes it the best when Seo acts like herself. And the reason he finds himself at the mercy of Seo’s “affections” is because she likes his attention and being around him.
And Mikoshiba (forever alone), is happy with his 2D relationships and honestly that’s beautiful. Dating Sims give him an environment that allows him to get close to someone without feeling anxious about interacting with them. After all, you can always restart in a game. He’s said it explicitly that he’s only interested in 2D relationships. I view him as able to be interested in someone once he’s known them well enough (to the extent of a character in a dating sim), but it’s also a possibility that real life relationships are completely not something he’s looking for as well. And despite the lack of interest in being in a romantic/sexual relationship with someone (and in fact showing a complete aversion to it), he still has great relationships with pretty much everyone on the cast.
So yeah, I think that the lack of romance is one of the best things about Gekkan Shojou Nozaki-kun, because removing romance from the equation opens it to focusing on relationships. Everyone has had interactions with everyone else without romance getting in the way and making everything awkward and without pushing people to the side just because they’re not the “end game” (and if they do get pushed to the side it’s usually as a joke). Friends are allowed to be friendly to one another. And all the things these characters do with and for one another is far more important than an “I love you” ever will be.
