Manor Lords is a medieval strategy game that combines a strategic layer (building a village/city) with spectacular real-time tactical battles. The creation and release of this production is the responsibility of the independent Polish developer Slavic Magic (it is a one-man studio), for whom this is a debut project.

The plot of the game

The game does not take place in a specific century or place, but is loosely inspired by historical realities (feudal Europe from the 11th to the 15th century).

Game mechanics

In Manor Lords, the action is largely viewed from above, but the player has control over the camera - they can zoom in and out to look at individual buildings or view the battlefield from a slightly different perspective. The gameplay can be roughly divided into two parts - strategic and tactical. In the first, we build and develop our own medieval village, which over time grows into a city. We decide what kind of buildings we want to build (each of them has its own purpose), we also have full freedom in the matter of their location - in Manor Lords we do not build according to any grid, each building can be rotated and positioned at will (the title puts emphasis on realism, so you should take into account the relief of the terrain and contact with trade routes). The game has a system of seasons and changing weather. We will also have to deal with famine, war and plague. The second part of the game consists of tactical battles reminiscent of the Total War series - we have a number of different units at our disposal, such as archers and light or heavy infantry. The player has the ability to set up unit formations and give orders to troops during the battle.

Technical aspects

Manor Lords has very nice three-dimensional graphics. The title has an almost unprecedented level of realism and detail for a strategy production. The locations look very believable, and the models of individual buildings or troops have been prepared with great care.

Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes is a classically realised JRPG game. It was developed by the Japanese studio Rabbit & Bear. The production was developed as a spiritual heir to the Suikoden series. The project was led by the father of the series, Yoshitaka Murayama, with other veterans of the franchise including Junko Kawano, Osamu Komuta and Junichi Murakami. This was the first project Murayama and Kawano had worked on together in more than two decades.

The plot of the game

The game takes place on the continent of Allraan, whose history has been marked by constant warfare between humans, elves, animals and desert dwellers. When the story begins, the Galdean Empire is dominant, having gained the upper hand over its rivals thanks to the discovery of a technology that increases the power of the runic lenses that form the basis of magic in the land. Galdean regularly organises expeditions in search of a powerful artefact to cement its position as a superpower. During one of these expeditions, a young Imperial Army officer and a warrior from a small village meet. They quickly become friends, but history throws them into the middle of a war that will change the fate of an entire continent.

Game mechanics

Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes is a Japanese role-playing game inspired by the classics of the genre. The game involves exploring the world, completing quests, developing characters and fighting battles. Battles are fought in a turn-based system in which we control a team of six players. The game is not limited to the fate of the two heroes mentioned above. In total, we get to know the stories of hundreds of characters involved in the conflict. Each of them has a unique personality and their own adventures. Not all of them are soldiers - there is no shortage of people who specialise in other areas that will help us win the war. A key part of the game is the expansion and management of the town. Recruited characters will live there and become the local blacksmith or cook, for example. As your fort grows, new trade options and additional ways to upgrade characters and equipment will open up. Characters can also join guilds to gain access to unique attributes. Mini-games, such as cooking and fishing, add to the fun.

Game modes

The game only has a single player mode. The developers have not included a multiplayer option. Instead, after completing the campaign, a New Game+ option is unlocked, which allows you to replay the story with the same character development, but at a higher difficulty level.

Technical issues

Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes offers attractive visuals, with 3D locations and 2D characters. It looks modern, but retains the atmosphere of 32-bit JRPGs.

The Planet Crafter is a survival game in which events are observed from a first-person perspective. The core of the game is the crafting system. The player must collect raw materials and use them to construct new items, machines and a base. There is an extensive technology tree within which all items can be upgraded to increase their usefulness. Initially, our efforts are focused on survival. The planet has an inhospitable environment that is completely unsuitable for human life. The player must avoid natural hazards and keep an eye on the suit's oxygen supply. Our mission is not the first, so the surface of the alien world is full of shipwrecks that hide useful items. Once settled on the alien planet, we can begin the process of terraforming it. Using modified plants and futuristic technologies, it is possible to create an atmosphere with oxygen, change the atmospheric pressure, raise the ambient temperature and extract water. This opens up new possibilities for expanding the base and provides access to further improvements. It also introduces new threats, such as changing weather conditions.

Game mechanics

No Rest for the Wicked is an action-RPG in which events are viewed from a bird's eye view. The gameplay focuses on combat using an arcade skirmish system and character development. Combat is fast and demanding, and success on the battlefield requires not only good reflexes, but also high precision. There is a considerable arsenal to choose from, with each type of weapon offering different types of attack. Game mechanics

V Rising gives you a bird's eye view of the action. The production puts a huge open world at our disposal. In it we will find dark forests, small and large settlements and abysmal undergrounds. Playing the role of a vampire, we can only afford to explore freely at night, while during the day we are condemned to hide from the sunlight and lurk in the shadows. As the game progresses, we will hunt for the source of our lifeblood, raid villages, kill bandits and confront enemy soldiers. We also battle a variety of creatures and face off against other bloodsuckers. The battles are dynamic and require dexterity and reflexes (timely attacks and dodges). Enemies are eliminated with melee and ranged weapons or by using a variety of combat skills and spells.

Character Development

As you progress through the game, you will develop your character by acquiring more powerful skills and collecting better equipment, which you can either craft yourself or acquire by other means (such as stealing it from defeated enemies). Along the way, we will also get our hands on raw materials to upgrade our fortress. The castle will serve as our base camp, a place to store our loot, and a rallying point for our troops. So we need to make sure it looks good and is as practical as possible. We recruit soldiers from among the humans we decide to turn into vampires. We need the army both to invade other players' strongholds and to defend our own. On the other hand, nothing prevents us from forming alliances with other players and facing all sorts of dangers together.

The game differs from other strategies in that we can choose any city as the terrain of our actions. This is possible thanks to real data downloaded from the OpenStreetMap service. The title was developed by the Warsaw studio Jutsu Games, known for titles such as 112 Operator and Rustler.

Story of the game

The story depicts a world brought to the brink of extinction by a mysterious "mad virus". It caused thousands of people to die instantly, while others were transformed into bloodthirsty creatures. No one was prepared for the strength, speed and aggression of those infected. The few immune to the virus hid in makeshift shelters. Ever since, they have been waiting for the moment when they can emerge from the underground to rebuild the world and perhaps even develop a cure.

Game mechanics

In Infection Free Zone, we manage a community of survivors in a chosen city. Thanks to the resources of the OpenStreetMap service, we can take the fight to the streets of Warsaw, New York or any other metropolis, using their characteristics and locations to our advantage. Throughout the game, we move our charges around the map (on foot or in vehicles) and loot buildings, taking into account the real location of pharmacies, shops or police stations.

Different development paths

We use the money we earn to expand the so-called infection-free zone. Within this zone, buildings are converted into production facilities, hospitals or armouries. Power stations provide electricity for the community, farms produce food, and high walls and watchtowers help fend off nighttime attacks by the infected. While playing Infection Free Zone, we may come into contact with other groups of survivors. Some will contact us by radio and offer to trade goods. Others will try to take them by force, using white or firearms. Depending on our strategy, we may seek a cure for the virus or attempt to rebuild the city from the ground up.

Stardew Valley is a sandbox RPG inspired by the hugely popular Harvest Moon farming series, best known from Nintendo's portable consoles. The game is being developed by the independent one-man studio Concerned Ape, founded by one Eric Barone. It was originally created for the PC, but its remarkable success prompted the developer to prepare console and mobile versions of the game.

Story of the game

The plot of Stardew Valley tells the story of a young man who leads a dull life as an employee of a large corporation. In the past, he received a mysterious envelope from his grandfather with the recommendation to open it only when he feels that his life has become monotonous and no longer brings him happiness. Recognising that this moment has just arrived, our protagonist opens it and learns that he has received an inheritance from his grandfather in the form of a small farm somewhere outside the city. Without giving it much thought, the man leaves his previous life and boring job to face a completely new challenge. When he arrives at the place, however, it turns out that there is no idyll waiting for him, and that the dilapidated farm is actually a small house surrounded by a patch of land overgrown with thick bushes and weeds. The hero's task is to restore the farm to its former glory.

Game mechanics

The general principles of gameplay in Stardew Valley are almost a carbon copy of the solutions known from the aforementioned Harvest Moon series. So the starting point here is an economic game in which we are mainly concerned with managing and developing our farm. We start the whole game by restoring it - digging up stones, cutting down trees and weeding out weeds. We then move on to planting, watering and harvesting crops, which is our main source of income. Over time, we will be able to grow more and more crops and even raise animals, and we can invest the money we earn in developing the farm.

Great freedom of action

The realities of a classic economic game described above have been framed in Stardew Valley as a Sanbox RPG. The title gives us a great deal of freedom in this respect, offering an extraordinary variety of activities and tasks to which we can devote ourselves, depending on our preferences. In addition to farming, our protagonist can go fishing, visit a nearby mine and search for useful resources, and even venture into dungeons where dangerous monsters and valuable treasures await. All this is complemented by an advanced crafting module, typical of sandboxes, and a character progression system that allows us to improve our hero's various skills as we progress through the levels.

Human relations

An equally important aspect of the game is integration with the local community. When not working in the fields, our farmer can go to a nearby town, take part in various events, interact with the characters we meet and carry out the tasks they give us. As in Harvest Moon, the game also offers the possibility of romance and, in the long run, marriage and children.

Multiplayer mode

Stardew Valley was originally designed as a single-player game. However, after the release of the title, the author did not stop working on its development and in later updates of the game introduced a number of new elements, including the possibility of multiplayer gameplay in cooperative mode. It should be noted that the multiplayer mode is not available on mobile platforms.

Technical issues

In terms of setting, Stardew Valley is very similar to the first instalments of the Harvest Moon series, with simple 2D graphics in a top-down view reminiscent of productions from the era of 16-bit consoles. Despite its apparent simplicity, however, the game offers an extremely complex gameplay model, as well as a whole host of flavours and additional possibilities that we gradually discover as the game progresses. The developer hasn't forgotten details such as the day and night cycle, dynamically changing seasons, and even the hero's fatigue system, thanks to which he loses energy by "oversleeping" at night or carrying out more demanding farm activities.

Sons of Valhalla is a production on the border between RTS and RPG games. The title was developed by independent studio Pixel Chest and published by Hooded Horse.

The plot of the game

Sons of Valhalla takes us back to the Viking Age. The main character of the game is Thorald Olavson - the son of an Earl who lives a happy and peaceful life. One day his village is attacked by Jarl Valgard and his followers. The invaders raze the settlement to the ground, kill the protagonist's father, and kidnap Raija, the woman of his heart, and take her deep into England. Without thinking twice, Thorald sets off in pursuit. The protagonist not only wants to take revenge, but also to save his beloved, who seems to be very important to the English king.

Game mechanics

In Sons of Valhalla, we watch the action from the sidelines. During gameplay, we take direct control of the protagonist and deal with both the expansion of his settlement and the organisation of destructive expeditions and the shedding of enemy blood. Our own village provides us with a constant supply of resources and warriors, so we must not only develop it significantly, but also fortify it so that it can be defended. Once our 'rear' is secured, we can board Langskips and embark on expeditions to plunder and conquer enemy settlements and fortresses. Dynamic battles take place in real time, and success depends not only on deploying as many troops as possible, supported by siege engines, but also on your own reflexes and dexterity. The protagonist takes an active part in the skirmishes, mainly using the sword. As the game progresses, the protagonist will evolve and his troops will be upgraded, allowing him to face new challenges as time goes on.

Technical aspects

The pixel art in Sons of Valhalla is of a high standard. We like the detailed design of the locations and the smooth animations, as well as the realistic lighting and particle effects.

The plot of the game

Palworld takes us on a journey to a fictional world where humans coexist with Pokemon-like creatures known as Pale (Pals). As the game progresses, we will travel around this picturesque land, capturing new creatures and using their unique powers and abilities in a variety of ways. It's up to us to treat them humanely or, on the contrary, to exploit them to the limit and then trade them in for healthier, stronger specimens.

Game mechanics

In Palworld we see the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). We have at our disposal a vast world made up of different locations. We can find dense forests and beautiful plains, as well as huge canyons and snow-covered wastelands. As we explore, we capture creatures that vary in size, appearance and ability, and use them in a variety of ways. Some are great for building, others are perfect for farming, resource gathering or factories, and still others we can use to move around the world faster (using them as mounts) or to defend ourselves from lurking dangers. With the help of Pali, we build camps, in which more and more sophisticated structures appear over time (such as pyramids or rockets), we farm the land (individual creatures perform specific actions on our plot, such as sowing, watering and harvesting) and take care of our headquarters (which someone needs to clean), as well as building powerful factories and running automated production chains that allow us to produce a wide variety of goods.

Build an army

We can multiply our creatures over time and even crossbreed them to create unique representatives of new species. We may also come across rare, endangered creatures on our travels. Catching them is forbidden, but the game can be worth it, as selling them can make you rich quickly. Just remember not to get caught while hunting. As for how to deal with your Pales - creatures that are exploited to the limit will work more efficiently, but will not live too long, while creatures that are treated well will enjoy a longer life, although we will have to wait longer for the effects of their work. At the same time, Palworld is teeming with threats - from violent atmospheric phenomena to hostile humans and creatures fighting alongside them. Against the latter, we can defend ourselves with the help of the killing tools we make in our factories. When all else fails, we have no choice but to flee, throwing our creatures at the mercy of our enemies to slow down the hunt and save our own skins. In addition, as with any survival game, your character will have needs that need to be met on a regular basis. So it's worth remembering that a juicy pile can be a source of food in a pinch.

Palworld offers both single and multiplayer games. We can cooperate with other players, travelling around the world and trading, or, on the contrary, we can compete with them and engage in fierce battles.

Maniac is an isometric action game with roguelike elements, where the gameplay focuses on wreaking havoc and destruction in an open world. The title was developed by Warsaw-based Transhuman Design studio (King Arthur's Gold, BUTCHER) and was inspired by the first two-dimensional instalments of the Grand Theft Auto series.

Game mechanics

In Maniac, our main task is to wreak havoc on the streets of the colourful city. The developers have given us a cast of characters with different traits, skills, equipment and motivations. We can control Iggy the Clown with a baseball bat, wreak havoc with Evil Santa with a shotgun, or play as Melissa, an inconspicuous girl who aspires to rule the world. Heroes differ in a number of traits, such as endurance, speed and the ability to use weapons. We can also buy upgrades (such as a bulletproof vest) or an arsenal. The production is characterised by an open structure - we can traverse eleven districts of the city on foot or by driving vehicles such as motorbikes and civilian or military cars. These are used to spread chaos on the streets and to escape from law enforcement when resistance becomes too strenuous. As the level of destruction increases, we turn our attention to more and more powerful crime-fighting units. This gives us the opportunity to take over their equipment, including tanks.

Technical issues

The work of Transhuman Design is characterised by colourful, comic-style graphics that contrast with the brutal gameplay. It is worth mentioning that, thanks to Maniac's built-in map editor, we can create new neighbourhoods ourselves.

Millenia is a 4X turn-based strategy game that throws down the gauntlet to the giants of the genre, led by Sid Meier's Civilization series. It was developed by C Prompt Games and published by Paradox Interactive, a company specialising in strategy games.

The plot of the game

Millenia allows us to be at the head of the people we lead over a period of 10,000 years, from the beginnings of civilisation to its various futuristic variants. It is up to us to decide how our people's destiny will turn out, how they will deal with various crises, and when and how (if at all) they will achieve victory over the others.

Game mechanics

Millenia takes a bird's eye view of the action. The gameplay takes place in turn-based mode over 10 eras, corresponding to 10 thousand years of human history. We start the game modestly, with a handful of people gathering basic resources and constructing the first buildings. As time goes by, we begin to grow, producing increasingly diverse and specialised products, carrying out scientific research, producing new technologies, and eventually gaining access to new buildings and various improvements. By perfecting our defences, we will begin to recruit more advanced military units; by mastering iron smelting, we will gain access to advanced tools or weapons; and by forming guilds, we will gain access to specialised products such as wine.

Different development paths

The game also allows us to choose the characteristics of our nation and its leader; it's up to us whether we want to lead a people of warriors into battle, or whether we want to make great geographical, scientific and technological discoveries. If we choose the path of conquest, we will find ourselves in automated skirmishes where the outcome of the battle is determined by the strength of the units involved. On the map, our army is symbolised by pawns, which can be divided and placed on the board according to individual preferences.

Adapting the action to the terrain

Whichever way we choose, more and more territories will come under our control, and we will be able to decide on their specialisation; territories rich in iron can be used for the production of weapons or tools, those covered in forests for the production of paper, while gold-rich territories can be used for smelting coins or jewellery. It's a good idea to sell the surplus of manufactured goods so that we can use the money to develop our nascent empire.

Historical and alternative eras

As we progress, the game allows us to enter new eras. In addition to the epochs known from the pages of history, there are a number of alternative epochs waiting to be explored, presenting other variants of history, governed by their own laws, available technologies and units. At the same time, our actions can plunge the world into one of the Crisis Epochs; however, the prevailing disorder, caused by war or disease, will be used to the advantage of skilled strategists and shrewd leaders. This is important because the country that manages to dominate the others will dictate the terms of victory here. While there is nothing stopping you from fighting to the end, the Era of Victory, you can win much earlier if you make the right decisions along the way.

Along the way we will often encounter enemies with whom we will have very dynamic and spectacular encounters. On the battlefield, we have to be constantly on the move, dodging enemy attacks, making quick counterattacks, and using our character's combat skills. It is up to us to decide whether to fight with a sword, bow, or use magic to send our enemies to the sand. Along the way, you will encounter both common enemies that are easy to defeat, and much more powerful foes, such as griffins and giants, that you can defeat by climbing on their bodies and attacking their weak points.

You are not alone on the battlefield

We are not alone on the battlefield, as up to three companions can join us on our adventures. These spawns have unique abilities and are controlled by advanced AI that learns a variety of behaviours over the course of successive battles. Interestingly, the game allows us to hire companions from other players (to gain more experience) and recruit characters trained by other community members.

Dragon's Dogma II is a single-player game. However, the realistic behaviour of our companions can create the illusion of cooperative gameplay.

Technical issues

Dragon's Dogma II boasts high quality graphics. As you play, you take control of one of the commandos and shoot your way through eight huge levels - from the jungle to a waterfall to an enemy military complex. Along the way, we jump on platforms, avoid traps, and eliminate hordes of enemies. We have an extensive arsenal at our disposal, including the standard machine gun, the iconic spread shot (which fires several bullets at once), laser weapons and a guided missile launcher. New to the game is the ability to upgrade your killing tools and use powerful overload abilities. As well as serial enemies, which we can send into the sand in large numbers, there are also powerful bosses to contend with. The game is also enriched by moments where we can watch the action from behind the heroes' backs or even sit behind the controls of a jet motorcycle.

Game Modes

The mainstay of Contra: Operation Galuga is the story mode, which we can play alone or in local co-op for up to two people. There is also an arcade mode that allows up to four players to play together.

The plot of the game

Winter Survival Simulator takes us on a journey to the American national park Mount Washington. The main character of the game went there on a winter trip with a group of friends. Unexpectedly, the trip turns into a dramatic struggle for survival when the protagonist is attacked by a bear and falls from a great height. He manages to get out of the predicament in one piece, but on the way he loses his rucksack, which is invaluable in these conditions. With little equipment and supplies, he must do everything in his power to survive and reach the abandoned park ranger's outpost in time to call for help.

Game mechanics

Winter Survival Simulator is played from a first-person perspective (FPP). During gameplay, we traverse the ice- and snow-covered land, and our primary goal is to take care of the protagonist's basic needs. The lack of water can be dealt with by melting snow or filling a menagerie in lakes or rivers, but getting food is a much more serious problem. An ad hoc solution is to eat fruit, although in the long run the key to success is to learn to hunt. It is worth looking around for traps left by hunters, and with a bit of luck you might catch a small animal. Such prey can then be roasted on a campfire; of course, to make a fire, we must first find dry firewood. To make matters worse, it is winter all around. Not only are sub-zero temperatures a deadly threat, but the weather in the mountains can change in an instant. In order to avoid frostbite, it is necessary to warm up the protagonist from time to time. Equally dangerous are the wild animals that roam the area. As the protagonist does not have a weapon, it is better to avoid direct encounters with wolves or bears, and if you are spotted by one of these beasts, it is better to flee.

Beware of the night

All of this means that spending the night outdoors is not the best idea here. While there's nothing to stop you from building makeshift shelters, it's often more effective to use one of the abandoned hunting huts, where you'll find useful equipment and which, once repaired, can serve as a solid base. At the same time, the protagonist's traumatic experiences do not go unnoticed. If we do not take care of the protagonist's mental health, over time he will begin to have frightening hallucinations.

Technical issues

Winter Survival Simulator has a graphic design of decent quality. The detailed environments and the realistic lighting system are particularly pleasing.

The plot of the game

The main protagonist of Robin Hood: Builders of Sherwood is the titular Robin Hood - an outlaw known from medieval English legends, who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor, and fought against the hard-nosed Sheriff of Nottingham. The protagonist and his friends, such as his beloved Lady Marion, Little John, Brother Tuck, Allan of the Valley and Will Scarlet, hide in the rugged forest of Sherwood. In order to wrest power from the despotic Sheriff, Robin and those who choose to join him must first set up a prosperous camp where they can prepare for the coming upheaval in peace.

Game mechanics

In Robin Hood: Builder of Sherwood, gameplay takes place on two levels. The first level is a characteristic of action RPGs. We traverse the vast open world (on foot or on the back of a mount) and complete various tasks. Throughout the game, we attack the Sheriff's men and caravans of merchants working with him, take part in hunts, ambush convoys and fight bandits. Skirmishes are dynamic and we use both bow and sword. As you progress, you will build up a network of contacts, meeting not only potential recruits for your camp (found both in the villages and in the city of Nottingham), but also local merchants and landlords with whom you can trade your surplus goods.

Think strategically

The second level of gameplay is strategic. Once we have found a suitable place to build a camp, we can enter management mode. The camera then changes perspective and shows our settlement from a bird's eye view. In this mode, you will be responsible for expanding the camp's infrastructure, building new structures and improving existing ones, as well as training recruits, to whom you can assign different functions; our subordinates can be hunters, guards, robbers, builders or farmers. The production of various goods also plays an important role, as Robin's subordinates not only need something to fight with, but also something to wear and eat.

Robin Hood: Builder of Sherwood is based on Unreal Engine 4 technology. The graphical environment of this production is very pleasing to the eye.

Mechanics

WRATH: Aeon of Ruin is a first-person perspective (FPP) game. The production focuses on the elimination of hordes of fearsome enemies, giving us the use of nine types of firearms (the arsenal includes the classic Bifurcation, as well as givens such as the Retcher and Fangspitter, which use teeth and cysts from the bodies of defeated enemies as projectiles) and ten artefacts that give the Stranger supernatural abilities. Exploration also plays an important role here, with eighteen locations to visit (three of which act as hubs connecting the other fifteen) including chilling crypts, ancient ruins and dark forests. You should keep your eyes peeled throughout the game, as there are not only keys to open passages to subsequent levels, but also various secrets hidden throughout the game world. It is worth noting that although the authors allow you to save your game at any time, you can only do so a limited number of times.

Game modes

In addition to the single-player campaign, WRATH: Aeon of Ruin features a competitive multiplayer mode and a cooperative module for up to four players.

Technical issues

WRATH: Aeon of Ruin is powered by Quake Engine technology. The whole thing has been adapted to modern standards as much as possible, so that the graphics setting does not trump the mouse so much. The game is accompanied by an atmospheric soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult (Quake Champions, Rise of the Triad, DUSK) and Bjorn Jacobsen (Cyberpunk 2077, EVE Online, Hitman).
