species dysphoria is a very odd feeling as someone who finds a lot of joy in having a human body. it is less a feeling of wishing my physical body was that of a dog’s, and more so a desire for people to recognize that despite my physical appearance, i am not human (though i do still desperately wish i could have my ears and tail). i wish that anyone could take a single look at me and understand that I am a dog even if i don’t look like one, and i wish that they would be able to intuitively recognize that i should also be interacted with as one. i like that i can communicate as/look like a person, it helps me feel more connected to my friends and family, but i wish people knew that thats all my body is: a vessel for connection. something to bridge the gap between me and everyone else. it doesn’t define me. i have a very similar experience regarding my gender identity which i think is interesting. i’m afab and very visibly feminine, i have long hair and while i usually dress pretty masc i still really enjoy things like skirts and jewelry, and i don’t have any desire to change my outward appearance despite the fact that i’m a boy. again there’s some small things like wanting a masculine voice, but i am perfectly fine with the fact that my outward appearance doesn’t match most people’s idea of what a guy looks like, i just wish people recognized me as one regardless. and obviously these wishes are not reasonable, strangers can’t be expected to read my mind, it’s just something i’ve been thinking about.

In her ghost tales Crowe looks at many different types of animals, but she is most interested in ghost dogs and canine ghost hunters.

She says about dogs:

" There is a deep mystery in the being of these creatures, which proud man never seeks to unravel, or condescends to speculate on. What is their relation to the human race? Why are these spiritual germs embodied in those forms and made subject to man, that hard and cruel master! who assumes to be their superior, because he is endowed with some higher faculties, the most of which he grossly misues. How beautiful are their characters when studied? How wonderful their intelligence when cultivated? How willing they are to serve us when kindly treated? But man, by his cruelty, ignorance, laziness and want of judgement, spoils their temper, blunts their intelligence, deteriorates their nature and then punishes them for being what he himself has made them. Well might Chalmers exclaim, All nature groans beneath the cruelty of man. Why are these creatures, sinless, as far as we see, placed here as the subject of this barbarous unthinking tyrant? In her work, Crowe explores a productive, emotional and symbiotic relationship between humans and dogs whether dead or alive.

And she believes in what Donna Haraway, in a very different time, and in a slightly different context, calls the relationship between dogs and humans: ‘otherness-in-connection’.

Animals know animals. My dogs know I am not human. They know I am a fox and a cat. I am still their brother. They all lay with me. I am the animal person. I get dogpiles and cuddles. It's so nice.

I think we need to normalize using "people" as a species neutral word.

Like idk in my brain the word people just doesn't automatically = human. To me it's just a way to signify intelligence and individuality, and to emphasize the need for respect towards another creature, not specific to any one species.

Dogs can be people, mice can be people, dragons can be people, humans can be people, birds can be people, elves can be people, robots can be people, and so on.

It's also (in my opinion) just much easier than always saying "beings" or "individuals" when referring to varying assortments of creatures.

Therian Tips : : Part 1

• Spiders

Spiders (Coming from someone who is one + owns multiple)

Quads and gear:

Masks are great! You can find printable ones online for design ideas if you want to make them yourself. For gear you can buy realistic spider Halloween costumes online, but they tend to be quite expensive - if you’re on a budget I recommend looking at “cheap and easy spider Halloween costumes for kids” on YouTube!

Quads get a bit complicated because it depends on what kind of spider you are… The vast majority of spiders conserve energy by burrowing/staying in web hides. So there really isn’t a lot to do - however you could practice slow crawling — and jumping - if you’re a jumping spider. Slow and simple parkour on all fours is also a fun idea! Just make sure you’re being responsible and careful.

Food:

Food is quite difficult for us spiders because their diet consists entirely of insects….. so here are some tips —

- Sweet: Gummy worms, Gummy’s with jelly fillings, Mini chocolate wafer bites, Chocolate/Yogurt covered nuts or raisins, Grapes, Banana chips

- Savoury: Cherry tomatoes, Small pieces of iceberg lettuce, mini breadsticks, scrape out the inside of cucumbers (don’t waste them obviously!) and slurp em up !!

- Only do this with food it won’t stick too — but if you have any, get some of that cheap spider web stuff they have around Halloween and wrap your food in it! (This works best with things like vegetables and fruit!) it’s really validating…

Connecting:

- I cannot stress this enough .. BUILD DENS!! They’re so fun and Spiders absolutely love to burrow, dig and hide.

- Do vocals ! Yes..yes..I hear you - spiders don’t make sound do they?? Well that’s where you’re wrong! Lots of spiders often hiss in self defence — Male wolf spiders make drumming sounds — Wolf spiders can also chirp!! Like crickets! However it can also be described as a purring sound

"I'm a fictionkin but not in the delusional way!" Do me a favor and duct tape your mouth shut. I will not tolerate the disrespect for those who suffer from delusions. This goes for other non/alterhuman communities as well (therian, otherkin, etc). If you think you can act that way around me I want you to know with the most utmost sincerity you are not welcome on my blog and I wouldn't want you around even if you were in a quarantine bubble. I say this as someone who suffers from psychotic symptoms due to depression that can cause me delusions.
