i don't like when people are saying "usa is a third world country" on posts about bad things happening here, that makes it sound like some countries are inherently supposed to be better than others
or that it would be "Normal" if a so called third world country was trying to make it legal to run over homeless people with cars or whatever republicans are up to these days

Reblogging solely for that clip of the hair spinning
Hey~~ I just got into Chinese dramas and novels and was wondering something about traditional chinese hairstyles. In many novels it is mentioned that men would tie their hair in ponytails- but so far I haven’t seen any in tv series? Was it common? Btw thank you for all your posts about hanfus❣️❣️❣️
Hi, thanks for the question!
Historically, Chinese men wore their hair in a single bun on top of their head, not in a ponytail. Ponytails were not a thing for men (or women for that matter) in ancient & imperial China. Perhaps the “ponytail” you see mentioned in novels is actually referring to the bun?
Below - examples of historically accurate men’s bun hairstyles in Chinese dramas:

Another possibility is that they are indeed referring to a standard ponytail. Many Chinese dramas & novels with “historical” settings (especially wuxia genre) do depict men in ponytails. This isn’t based on history, but is rather a stylistic convention that’s become accepted and common over time (mainly because it looks cool ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).
Below - examples of historically inaccurate men’s ponytail hairstyles in Chinese dramas (the bangs aren’t historically accurate either…):

“Surge in antisemitism”
I have worn my magen david and not had a single comment, from anyone— not Muslims, Christians, people wearing kufiyahs. I’ve been to protests and demonstrations, and never been more welcomed or felt so safe. Palestinians have hugged me, have shared food with me. Leftists have constantly held space to listen and to learn, to make room for changes and growth.
But you know what I have experienced? Jewish Zionists screaming at me, calling me shameful, Jewish Zionists on the internet debating the legitimacy of my Jewishness. I’ve been called kapo, k*ke and told I’d be r*ped by Hamas. I’ve had the most vitriol from ZIONISTS. I’ve faced the most antisemitism from Zionist Jews, and that makes me so inconceivably sad. I’ve been looked down upon and cursed at.
Zionism is not Judaism. Never will be.

It's always weird to me whenever I see people saying "all you really need is like a minimum or 3 or 4 products" when it comes to makeup or skincare for your face because like.
IDK. Maybe it's because I was raised by [largely black] feminists. Maybe it's because I was raised in an environment where there is a religious objection to makeup. Maybe it's because the significant majority of my friends both growing up and even nowadays don't wear makeup unless they are deliberately trying to make a statement or draw attention to the fact that they're wearing makeup. Maybe it's because the only times I've ever worn makeup were due to ballet competitions and I had to be pinned down and forced to wear it.
Anyway the minimum anyone, literally anyone, ever needs is a clean washcloth and clean, warm water. UV protection if you'll be out in the sun. And if you're experiencing anything literally any skin issue, talk to a dermatologist about products that may help alleviate your symptoms, including oral medication.
You wanna wear makeup? Wear makeup idgaf. But "the minimum you need is a good foundation and-" no. The minimum you need is to clean your face with water. If you're finding that's not helping your skin, and it's a chronic problem? You probably have a health problem you need to talk to a doctor about.

last night my partner held a somber little passover seder to show me what it’s about and when they got to the part where they were supposed to open the door for elijah they paused, frowned, and said “oh. huh. there is a clown.” and I looked out. and sure enough. there was a clown.

why do you think it's so common for writers to insert themselves into their stories?

honestly the “talking stage” in gen z dating culture has ruined so much of the mystery and thrill associated with the development of budding relationships

I hear the words "bichon frise" and my brain spends an uncountably long moment frantically overturning every memory I have, desperately trying to remember what foreign luxury car brand I have to pretend to care about in order for this conversation to go favorably. After my every mote of knowledge about cars has been thoroughly ransacked and I am on the verge of failing this social interaction, a smudged sticky note flutters into view that simply says "small white dog."

honestly like i get the poly(nesian) vs poly(amorous) thing, and n(on)b(lack) vs n(on)b(inary), and i’ll change to polyam or ply or enby if asked to avoid confusion, but i also need yall to know that like…its okay for one abbreviation to have multiple meanings. theres only 26 letters and we can reuse some of them, no one is “stealing” anything.

homeschooling in the US needs to be regulated but this is one of those conversations that immediately gets crushed by extremist conservatives and even well-meaning liberals will pipe up to be like "well some homeschooling is good!" when that's absolutely not relevant. regulation will not change anything for the homeschooling families who are serious about their children's education. the people who need to be regulated are the fringe extremists

Sometimes I see posts on here and feel like a lot of you have internalized the idea that the qualifying prerequisites for being LGBT are being cool and interesting and subversive, and that the fact that everyone in the community happens to be attracted to their own gender or else stepping outside of the gender assigned to them is just a happy coincidence, and not like, "not only a qualifying prerequisite, but the SOLE qualifying prerequisite." Being gay IS cool, but THAT'S the happy coincidence. Like I'm sorry to break it to everybody but even boring gay people are gay and even cool straight people are straight, because being gay is not about being cool, it's about being gay.

in my head the star wars equivalent of tswift is some human woman named tay’lor spiff or something and her stans are losing their minds over theories that she’s secretly a jedi singing about the horrors of war, even though she’s from a neutral system that hasn’t seen so much as a moral panic in 50 years
