NO MUSICIAN WAS EVER MORE PUNK ROCK THAN NINA SIMONE

Excuse my silly thesis, but the point is worth making. No punk rock artist has ever been as honest or as dangerous as Nina Simone. I am awed by her bravery and seemingly limitless talent. The riveting, heart wrenching new documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? (now streaming on Netflix) from director Liz Garbus had me in tears after the first few performances, and well before the film delved into the horrors of Simone’s relationship with her husband/manager or Simone’s struggle with mental illness. 

I am currently under the spell of Simone, which would account for my intensity and honesty, Simone exudes both — there is nothing phony about her. At one point she tells a French audience that the venue she is performing in is ugly and they roar with applause and understanding. Everything matters to Simone. She is fueled by deep anger and demands respect, at least in the performance venue. When someone is talking in the audience, or gets up to go the bathroom Simone stops the show. In an interview she says, “I want to go into that den of these elegant people with their old ideas … smugness … and just drive them insane.”

when someone who you love, someone with paws; asks you to cut off a finger, first one, then two, then three, but that's not enough, the only way to be with them is to adjust to their ideal of paws; it gets more difficult to cut off the remaining fingers the less you have, and still you manage, out of love; and then they look at you and say "wow that's not a paw man that's a stump, that's gross and pathetic why would you do that you freak, also you're not fun anymore with all that blood and saying it hurts" and leave.
