The problem, often not discovered until late in life, is that when you look for things in life like love, meaning, motivation, it implies they are sitting behind a tree or under a rock. The most successful people in life recognize, that in life they create their own love, they manufacture their own meaning, they generate their own motivation. For me, I am driven by two main philosophies, know more today about the world than I knew yesterday. And lessen the suffering of others. You’d be surprised how far that gets you.

Sometimes you meet someone, and it’s so clear that the two of you, on some level belong together. As lovers, or as friends, or as family, or as something entirely different. You just work, whether you understand one another or you’re in love or you’re partners in crime. You meet these people throughout your life, out of nowhere, under the strangest circumstances, and they help you feel alive. I don’t know if that makes me believe in coincidence, or fate, or sheer blind luck, but it definitely makes me believe in something.

A Conversation with my 18 month old Niece

My little sister and her 18 month old live in New Zealand. We try to skype from time to time when we can, and usually Eva will run to the computer, say "hi" and run back to watching Dora. Lately, however, she has become more and more vocal and feels the need to tell me everything about her day... although, I don't understand a thing she is saying.

Not only is she becoming quite the conversationalist, she's really smart. She started counting to 3 for me, in english and in japanese and tells me how to say things in spanish, like "baila!" (dance!). But then if you ask her what different animals say...

Me: "Eva, what does a dog say?"

Eva: "WOOF!"

Me: "What does a cat say?"

Eva: "Meow!"

Me: "What does a lion say?"

Eva: "RAAARRRR!!!"

Me: "What does a bear say?"

Eva: "BEAR!"

yes... yes, Eva. That's exactly what a bear says. xo

Alright, I’m about 15 minutes into the VMAs and here are my critiques so far… 1. Miley Cyrus should never be able to perform again. If anyone couldn’t tell she was singing over a track and trying to get that foam hand pregnant, there’s something wrong. 1b. Who did her hair like that???? 2. Whoever styled Lil Kim, and let her go out on stage like that, should be fired. 3. Selena Gomez is fine but if we’re going to really give a best pop VIDEO award out… It shouldn’t be to her.

4. Lady Gagas performance was AMAZING! That girl knows how to work a stage. Cheers to you, Lady Gaga.
