I've seen elriels make the arguments that azriel replied more naturally to elain because he just blinked and answered while before he answered gwyn he first asked her "why are you asking?" and she had to insist and then he answered, and this in their opinion was a sign that he's more open with elain than with gwyn or whatever.

But elain asked if he coul fly. It's not a truly personal question. Of course azriel had no problem answering beside the first second of surprise. Cassian and rhys would have answered the same if elain had asked them, because it's something that the three of them have in common and no secret to anyone who knows them even a little.

But singing is something way more personal than flying, and something related only to azriel. And yes, no matter what elriels say, he has never said in text that he sings, except to gwyn. The two questions are not on the same level.

Gwyn got Azriel to reveal something PERSONAL when he admitted that he could in fact sing. Versus Elain Archeron and her “can you truly fly?” Thats the big deal. We learned something NEW from a question Gwyn asked vs. a duh kinda question from Elain.

Also tell me you don’t know what a Shadowsinger is without telling us. Being a Shadowsinger isn’t anything to do with singing, it’s a type of fae. sweetheart off page means it wasn’t WRITEN in the book. Like in ACOSF we know the boys had their snowball fight, Cassian tells us it happened, Azriel tells us it happened but we never see it on page. On page we see it happen on page. Like Nesta’s slumber party with Emerie and Gwyn, it’s actual text we can READ. Bless your heart. 🫶🏻

during my first 'the untamed' watch and my first read of mdzs, i really disliked jiang cheng's character. back then, i didn't bother to think too much on why i didn't like him. just that his constant anger was annoying and seemed, to me, a sign that he gave no regard to other people's feelings.

a handful of years passed and now i have so much love for his character. it's easy to see why it took such a long time for jiang cheng to grow on me. angry people make me uncomfortable, because anger is an emotion i learned to associate with all things negative and i am still learning to have a healthier relationship with it.

that's why jiang cheng, nowadays, is so fascinating to me. he experiences and expresses his emotions through anger. he uses it as a filter, although it doesn't work as well as he probably wishes it did. it's the emotion he is most comfortable with as well as the emotion that he deems protects him from other people trying to perceive those soft parts of his insides that he's learned to see as weakness. jiang cheng's anger is a defence mechanism, which is really not uncommon at all. because of how he was raised and what he has been through, it's just always on the surface.

his anger is rarely, if ever, just anger. there's something more to it that needs patience and an understanding of his heart to analyze.

i'm hoping to reread mdzs this year and i'm also slowly rewatching the show. i'll definitely have more thoughts on him as i'm reminded of more of the cause and effect in the story. who knows, maybe i'll be inspired to write a full character analysis on him and that anger he uses like a guard dog on a loose leash.

No, but to suggest that Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng only ever had the relationship of a master and servant and that the only thing that held them together was debt and obligation on Wei Wuxian's part is such a wild take considering how absolutely unhinged the both of them are when it conscerns the other.

Nie Huaisang is such a character. He can faint on command. The character guide in the novel describes him as a dandy and lists his weapons as saber (ostensibly) and crying (actually). He stalked a canary for several days and then sneaked it into class. He collects porn and shares it with his friends. He's in a sword wizard society and his clan in particular is known for their blades but he never once has a fight scene. His characteristic accessory is a paper fan. He failed summer camp twice. He formed a Golden Core nearly a decade later than everyone else his age. When his brother was killed he set in motion a several years long revenge scheme that involved both careful planning and insane improv. He built a reputation on not knowing anything. He threw himself on his brother's killer weeping and saying "if you don't help me I'm killing myself in front or you." Truly who is doing it like him

THE REASON EVERYONE IN SCUM VILLAIN IS IN LOVE WITH SHEN QINGQIU IS BECAUSE HE. SHOWS. KINDNESS. nobody else in the story really shows kindness until he starts teaching it to them. kindness is never rewarded in the world of PIDW. it’s not just luo binghe who had a bad childhood and grew up fucked up. PIDW is a story about plotting and scheming and bad people doing bad things, and when a genuine kind person who doesn’t have a single ulterior motive shows up, it changes not just binghe’s path, but everyone’s. the only truly kind person in PIDW was YQY, and we know what happened to him.

i mean, if you think about the male power fantasy genre, it’s very alpha wolf loner every man for himself type stuff. shen yuan is probably the first person any of the people around him have ever seen pick up a friendship without the active intention of screwing it over somewhere down the line. in fact, he goes out of his way to make friends with people, and not just because of their power or abilities.

it’s no wonder that he improved the lives of everyone around him, and not just binghe.
