Mersi.
I do find it very interesting always the ways in which violence in all forms is considered much more acceptable than positive, consensual sexual expression or titillation. I’m not entirely sure it is as simple as a desensitization to violence; I tend to assume, instead, that it has much more to do with a very Western cultural attitude of shame towards sex, especially sex of a “deviant” nature. It is disturbing, either way, on multiple levels: one may be responsible for deaths and misdeeds, but retain one’s “innocence,” while a sexual encounter or even the awareness that sexual encounters occur will “ruin” this “innocence.”  What precisely is the definition of “innocence,” under these conditions? Optimism? An appreciation for human life? A belief in the power of emotions, and of relationships? In what ways are these ideas negated by natural human desire? And, perhaps, the Western cultural oddity of deep revulsion or embarrassment regarding seeing one’s male friends’ bodies, or knowing that they are behaving sexually in general, and the ways in which that oddity is so often projected onto all people, no matter their background or life experience. What drives the panic towards these situations, and the nervous laughter when such situations are avoided?
Why is there expectation of such a reaction? Is this a subversive sort of homophobia? Unfortunately, this is usually my general conclusion. Some populations are deeply concerned with these things, to my frequent discomfort. We are moved by touching stories of friendships between the same sex, and have been throughout world history, but so frequently we sanitize any hint of romantic or sexual element from these relationships.  I assure you, my ability to kill is not dulled by love, lewdness, or orientation. Nor is my ability to hope.
