ok i was talking to my friends about this earlier but what the fuck did kel do to basil???? when he's going through his flowers, he so nice to everyone else; "Aubrey is stubborn and keeps her own, Hero is versatile and universally loved, Mari helps people see the best in situations, and Sunny is perfect" y'know?? but when he comes to the cactus, first, when Aubrey is like "Is it cuz he's a prick!!" He's like "that too, but..." the proceeds to be like "cacti are impossible to kill, so even you could take care of one" and it's like ??? What did he do to you??? You basically called him a prick and an idiot???? Huh???

thinking about how one of kel's first lines is "man, aubrey always gets what she wants". thinking about how aubrey wanted to go see sweetheart's show for hearts, so hero took them all to sweetheart's show for hearts. thinking about how aubrey told molly not to touch omori, and she didn't again.

thinking about how all aubrey wanted was to keep her friend group together. thinking about how aubrey's clothes are too big in headspace, she only has one toy and in the real world, her house is a tip with her room almost bare. thinking about how aubrey wanted to keep the photos of mari and throw the rest in the bin, and how she put them back in the album after kel picked it out of the trash.

thinking about how sunny viewed her as a protector of his as a kid, someone who'd look for for him, and how the hooligans trust her to lead and look out for them, and how hero and mari were like older siblings to her when she was younger, and how aubrey's parents didn't look out for her. thinking about how aubrey is angry and insulted and violent and vengeful, and how she wants the girl she knew as a sister to come back. thinking about how she believes she wasn't enough for her old friends, for anyone. thinking about how little possessions she has, how she pushes away people who care about her, how she's viewed as a "bad kid" by the residents of faraway.

want is such a big theme with aubrey. in headspace, every one of hers is fulfilled. in the real world, we see almost none being.

So, I’ve been thinking about these panels… a lot.

And I love this entire chapter because it’s literally just about Yotasuke accepting someone else into his life, letting someone in. It’s such a subtle gesture, but this moment is so important in Yotasuke’s development as a character.

To understand this moment though, we need to look at the previous page, where Yotasuke himself explains the significance of sharing food or drink with someone else.

Going back to the first few panels, we see how Yamaguchi utilises “light” and “shadow” to tell a story. The cup of amakaze almost seems to be emitting light, as we see it kind of glow in Yatora’s hand as he holds the drink. When he offers the cup to Yotasuke, the light bounces off Yatora’s face, as well as the fluffy edges of Yotasuke’s jacket (not quite reaching his face, as he has yet to accept the cup).

When Yotasuke takes the cup, the light is bouncing off peoples’ backs, almost as if it’s a lamp, and the two of them are, rather than being in a spotlight, in a world of their own. As he finally takes a sip, the light softly illuminates his face and jacket.

It’s Yotasuke beginning to trust Yatora - even if sometimes the boy is too much for him. And a moment where he admits to himself that he does see Yatora as a friend.

Ok, about blue period.

For a manga that talk's about art, I'm still surprised about how deep it goes in internal art conflicts. Some of them are not exactly easy to talk about, like, we start the manga talking about if you can have a future making art and the fear to be judged if you like it. The fear on getting in something new that not every one respect.

As you read more and more chapters, you end up immerse on this and other topics, met other characters that have more contact with that reality and Yatora's experiences with all of that, end up changing the way he sees art and what it means to him to make art. You feel like been dreaming about the future and then falling into a nightmare, or the other way around.

I mean, can u really say this guy didn't come from a nightmare?

And her from a bright dream?

Blue period can mix that fear and hope on the narrative, making it visually clear to the reader, tricking the reader into the subject, and making me think about it for a long time.

What's real art?

What's good art?

What's the right art?

Art wasn't suposed to be free from this kind of rules? Be a free form of expression?

Well, this kind of things.

I said before that this manga was kind of therapeutic, and now I think is because of how immersive it can be, because of all this things I just mentioned, and, of course, it's also because of the beautiful drawings and the moments that I get myself laughing as an idiot because of some idiot panel. It makes me open my eye to new views, and it's so cool when we notice that this is happening with Yatora too.

This, together with the fact that we are going along with a journey of self-knowledge. Yatora learned that he loved to paint, he was strong enough to say it to he's family and ended up entering the process to reach Gedai. After that, bad and good things make him discovery more about the people around him, about art and, most important, about himself. He's growing, getting more mature, and, at some point, I got proud noticing that myself.

The dilemas that he've been facen, the criticism, the fear and joy to make what he want, all this is making him grow. It not just study to pass in exams or just the old bar in shibuya with the same friends. It's new, it's refreshing and, at the same time, brings to him all sorts of problems that he wasn't used to deal with.

Everyone have to learn to develop virtues, to finally discover how to deal with things without get hurt or hurt another one. To be happy by living without regrets. And the first step, is learning about yourself.
