Serene Feathers : The Mother God
the mother god, often simply called mother by all geese, is a spiritual figure that each and every goose is taught the story of as they grow. they credit her for their gifts and talent, for their individuality, and for their life itself.
on the rare chance a goose is not taught her tale, and lives out an atheistic life, they are treated as below other geese and often outcast. this atheistic view is especially common among domestic geese, who seem to have abandoned the mother god. this is also heavily looked down upon, and treated as something to both pity and shun.
the mother's real name is hanhi. it is typically seen as disrespectful to refer to her with her direct name unless one is a prophet or seer of sorts, so they are taught to call her mother, mother god, or (in formal settings only) mother god hanhi.
it is said that, a very long time ago, before time itself, there was plenty of gods who freely roamed the earth, walking, swimming, and flying about to do as they please. they all had mutual respect with one another, and fights did not break out.
the goose god, hanhi, was a jack of all trades. she could fly and float about in the sky, free with the other bird gods. she could swim and dive deep underneath the water, free with the frogs and the fish gods. and she could, of course, roam and walk the dry land, free with the bear, squirrel and wolf gods.
the swan god, eala, was jealous of hanhi. he could swim like a fish, fly like a bird, and walk like a man, too; why wasn't he considered free, like hanhi? it wasn't fair. he was sick of living inside her shadow.
the one weakness hanhi and other bird gods had, was that they had to swallow small stones routinely for their gizzards, or else they wouldn't be able to digest their food properly. eala, who had a gizzard as well, was well aware of this weakness, and used it to his advantage.
eala watched over hanhi closely, and began to memorize her daily schedule. he noticed that she primarily stayed near a particular lake, where she would fly about in the day, then rest in the water at sunset, and eventually sleep on the land's shore at night. he knew she would feast upon the small, smooth pebbles on the shorebed to fill her gizzard.
one night, while she rested on the shorebed and was soft asleep, eala came and sprinkled poison on the small pebbles all along the shore, and flew away before the sun came to rise. hinha woke up the next morning, and swallowed some of the pebbles, not knowing they were poisoned.
she fell deathly ill soon after, but still managed to fly and float about in the sky, swim and dive in the water, and when she came to rest and sleep on the land at night, she curled up on the beach, her head tucked under her wing, and slept. she did not wake up the next morning.
the other bird gods wept, for when they noticed their dear friend was gone and passed, they were beyond distraught. all of them mourned her greatly, and when word spread, so did the fish and frogs, so did the wolves and squirrels and bears. all creatures in the woods began to cry together...all of them except eala.
the animals began to realize he was the one who had poisoned her, and for this they cast him out. they cursed eala, and stretched out his neck, to almost twice it's length before. they said that as his punishment, he shall have a neck the the size and length of a snake, to show his treachery and jealousy, for all eons until the end of time.
eala, now cursed forever, hissed and spat and fussed about, but up in the sky, deep above in the stars, where no other animal could come to reach, hanhi would come to live again. her spirit was reborn among the stars and the sun and the moon, to live in the vast night sky forever, as a gift for her sacrifice of life. this is where she remains now, watching over all geese from above, guiding them until the end.

Serene Feathers : Migration
as the winter grows colder, and the white snow builds up, it is said eala's spirit haunts the land for a few months, trying to chase out the flocks and get his revenge for them cursing him. the piles of snow are said to be some of his great white feathers that he has plucked out in a fit of rage each time he is unsuccessful in killing off a flock. because of this, the snow is seen as one of the good parts of winter, because it is a sign that the geese are still winning and thriving.
eventually, though, every lake and river will freeze over as it grows colder and colder. this causes an unbalance in the elements, affecting the wedges the hardest, as they lose access to the water.
because of this, the mother beckons us all to take to the skies near her, so she may guide us south to safety and warmth until eala's haunting is over. she gives us strength and blesses us so we may fly for days and days until we have reached safety and warmth and can nest again, to wait until the winter is over.
in this enviorment, we may finally rest and recover in the warmth, until mother hanhi lets us know it is safe to return home.
during migration, other flocks may make an effort to be especially kind to the wedges of the bath, since it is the hardest on them to be removed from their homes in the water.
names associated with the winter and ice may be considered unsavory, or predicting of a bad destiny, in some flocks. however, in other flocks it is treated as a sign of resiliance and survival.

Serene Feathers : Roles
chiefs : the leader of a flock. chosen by the mother god herself, each leader is responsible for the lives and safety of each member of the flock, and tasked with leading them to safety and greatness. when a chief dies, the flock's seer will choose the new chief by the next morning, with the guidance and wisdom of mother hanhi.
seers : the chosen goose who speaks to the mother for the flock, and guides them spiritually. the second highest ranking, often very close with the chief. only one per flock.
maidens : the caretakers and babysitters of the flock. traditionally feminine, but can be filled by geese of any identity. they are heavily respected and some of the first to feed when food is brought home to the flock, since they have a very hard and stressful job. maidens are not allowed to have mates, since risking children of their own could potentially cause bias in the care of goslings.
sergeants : geese valued for their ability to plan fights and wars; they keep track of territory owned by other flocks nearby, and in the dreaded occasion war breaks out, will plan out and order the fighters of the flock. there are usually only 1 to 3 sergeants per flock. a role that is sometimes looked down on because of it's violent nature, but also sometimes praised, depending on the flock.
studs : the largest and strongest geese of the flock. they help with anything requiring strength such as building shelters, moving objects, intimidating enemies, guarding camps, etc. traditionally a masculine role, but can be filled by geese of any identity as long as they are big.
clinics : those who help mend injuries, cure sicknesses, and teach safety to other geese of the flock. sometimes working alongside the seer, in scenarios where spirituality may help with healing. if a goose is to die, they will bury the body with the help of the seer who will then send a prayer to ensure the deceased pass on.
balancers : the rest of the flock, often the most vast or common role. fully grown geese who do not fit any other particular role. they may be trained in very basic knowledge of several skills, and be made to step in and fill specific roles in emergencies if needed, but otherwise do not have much of a job besides providing food and basic safety for their flockmates. somewhat low ranking, since they do not serve much purpose.
goslings : the young and underdeveloped of the group. at 8 weeks old, the flock's seer and chief will meet with the gosling's parents to discuss what role they will fit when they are grown. they will then start training in this role, and be considered fully grown into their role at 12 weeks old.
underlings : the lowest of the flock. hardly any protections or priveledges besides being kept in the camp. this is a role a goose is given as a punishment, typically for betraying the flock or chief, and may be able to grow out of if they improve. if an underling does not improve in enough time, or their behavior worsens, they may be expelled from the flock. prisoners are also considered underlings.

Serene Feathers : Naming System
Each flock has a "family name" that has been passed down for generations. This name functions somewhat like a human surname, always being at the end of each member of the family's name. For example, a flock with the family name "Wind" may have geese with names like "Warm Wind", "Whistling Wind", or "Sleet Wind".
The first name, also known as the goose's personal name, is chosen by both of their parents. This first name can be anything, as long as it is a word that can pair together with the family name in a way that makes sense. (So "Warm Wind" is a legitimate name, but "Bear Wind" is not.)
Members of a flock who were not born in the flock (either coming from another, formerly being domestic, etc) will keep their given names, but their offspring will be given the proper family name, if they have any in the flock.
The personal name can be based off of anything, be it the goose's appearance, personality traits, something about how they were born, or something the family wants to see from them as they grow.
The family name depends on the element assigned to the flock. Skeins tend to have sky, wind, or air based family names ('Breeze', 'Hail', 'Cloud', 'Comet'). Wedges tend to have water, river, or ocean themed family names ('Stream', 'Lake', 'Fish', 'Shell'). And of course, gaggles tend to have ground, plant, or tree themed names ('Mud', 'Mushroom', 'Leaf', 'Bark').
Geese refer to a goose they don't know well, or only know as superior, as their full name ('Warm Wind'). This is seen as not only a sign of respect and politeness, but also courtesy. If a goose is particularly close to another goose, they may refer to them as only their personal name (simply 'Warm'). Family members hardly ever refer to each other with their full names; If a goose from the same family or flock refers to another member of that flock with their full name, it is very often an intentional sign of disrespect, or a way to insult that goose.
When a new flock is formed, they take on the family name of the goose who made and first led the group. The founder goose will also shed their former family name, and only be referred to as their personal name, to show their dominance over the other geese of their flock. The fellow founding members of the new flock can choose to keep their old names or change their family names to the new flock's family name, however their offspring will always have the flock's family name.

Serene Feathers : An Introduction
different geese are split up into three different groups. those guided by the sky, those guided by the water, and those guided by the land. they consider themselves gifted among the birds because their mother god blessed them to be connected with all of the primary elements of life: : "the soil (land), the breath (air), and the bath (water)".
it's said that the mother god chooses each flock's main element on the night the flock is formed. this is revealed to the flock leader by looking up into the stars in the night sky and closing their eyes; the mother god will share thoughts with them for this brief moment to reveal their flock's purpose to them.
a flock is not officially considered a flock until the mother god has blessed them. a group that is unable to be blessed, or refuses to seek out her blessing, is not considered a flock and is looked down upon by other geese.
flocks of the breath are called skeins, flocks of the bath are called wedges, and flocks of the soil are called gaggles.
skeins are the most spiritual, being alligned with the mother god most closely, as they fly in the sky alongside her. wedges are considered the most intellectual, spending plenty of their time looking down into the ponds and reflecting, planning out their own thoughts with great intelligence and wit. gaggles are considered the most brave, for they live a vulnerable life, down on the land with most other animals; they are gifted in battle and strength.

The first day of spring is meant to be a day of joy and rebirth. For our colony, however, it ended in distress, pain, and death.
The late winter rains had called us to build our new homes, and we had built our settlement in two separate domes atop two wooden plateaus. From the top of the domes, you could see the vast bladed forest stretch out before you, slowly growing taller as it absorbed the sun and rain. But that vantage point would soon prove fatal.
Doom came as an immense titan of plastic and steel, roaring slowly on four round legs, with two long legs of cloth and skin supporting its head at the back. It was an abomination of an insect, one that had grown larger than even the legendary beasts from eons ago, one that simply should not be. Before we knew it, our first dome was trapped in a spinning maw that ate the forest around us, sending shards of the long leaves all around us and tearing the dome apart. We scurried to rebuild, but five minutes later our second dome, the one housing our newborn brothers and sisters, was hit as well. Rushing to get them out of reach of any of the immense beasts that sought our demise, we thought the day's troubles were over.
We were wrong.
Two brief sprinklings of snow-white dust hit our domes: one smelling of chalk, the second smelling of sweetness. The first one shredded our bodies, leaving us too weak to work; the second was pure poison, leaving us dying where we stood.
To whatever god is out there, please. Wipe that abominable insect from the earth, and allow us to have our revenge. But alas, we will not be the ones to see it done, for we are broken and dying, and we will not see summer.

Music: Moving Day - Secret of NIMH OST
“Within a dog, your depravity is one most obscene!”
“Is that not why I tickled your fancy?” --- Asmodei [delirious] and Sverkai having a spat. Or a lover’s quarrel.
For context, Asmodei is going mad from a bullet in his brain, which is making him think strange things, but that is only made worse by him suspecting Sverkai has ulterior motives (if he plans to usurp him or something). So Sverkai finds Asmodei (completely unaware of this), who attacks him in a rage, and the two fight each other. After, Asmodei leaves the pack, never to been seen again...Or so it seemed.

Music: Song of the Grateful Duck [Animal Farm 1999]
Asmodei, mighty leader! Mighty leader, watching over us! Asmodei, mighty leader! Mighty leader, watching over us!
Shout! Shout! Shout out loud! Snout! Snout! Dark and proud!
Friend on high Who guides us with your smile Teach us how to be as kind as you
Asmodei, mighty leader! Mighty leader, watching over us! Asmodei, mighty leader! Mighty leader, watching over us! --- When the pack embraces the likes of a cult or dictatorship. Sverkai has manipulated the desperate starving masses (Turning friends and family against each other), filling their heads with nonsense, while feeding Asmodei's cold dwindling mind and soul.
Here, Sverkai engages in a political rally of sorts, with Asmodei taking charge upon the rock to make some announcement, while Vernaya watches silently amidst the crowd's ecstasy as they chant and dance along blindly.
