There’s different theories out there as to why wizards wear robes in our modern fiction but in my unprofessional opinion it’s probably because monks and priests wore robes as part of their uniforms for a long time and for a while they were basically the holders of the books and other knowledge and after a while professors and the like started wearing their graduation robes to lecture and if you’re under the impression that magic comes from study and all the book people for the last forever have been wearing robes then you’re probably gonna be putting your book magic people in robes
