With the new AI opt out staff announcement, peacock I'm on a fence whether to elephant roll back into my old, inactive sausage accounts, to start posting a series of posts with random cookie words, or just outright greenly delete everything.

The ducking best part is that the fresh opt out option isn't even showing here yet :)

How does one human face?

I got back to drawing a silly idea of ‘Rylee Reloaded on a GoKart Sparrow’ that came to me back in October and look, I’m drawing smooth lines for the first time in what feels like my entire life :D

It’s far from finished, I even plan to colour it but baby steps.

101 Plotting for Dummies

How many times have you found an RP partner only to hit the roadblock of:

The TL;DR version of my advice for you are only those two points:

Start general and work your way into details

Don’t ever say ‘dunno, you pick’; flip a coin if you need to to make a choice.

No one is - or at least no one should - expect you to roll into their DMs with a spotless plot with all the minutia already ironed out; that would be: coming into someone’s DMs with a plot idea prepared, not: coming into someone’s DMs to plot. You can start with not the faintest idea of what you’re going to write and end up with a rough plot idea.

Please, remember: a rough plot idea is often all you need. You can go into details and decide on what your muses are going to do 50 replies down the line but all that you really need is an idea where to start and in what general direction you want to go. Let’s be honest after all, muses have a tendency to derail the most intricate plans.

1. Start general and work your way into details.

What do I mean by that?

Muses: decide which muses are going to be written. If you’re both singlemuses, congratulations, you have this point done.

Main Verse or AU: decide whether you’d like to place this interaction in your muses main interactions or perhaps you’d like to start some new AU plotline for them.

If you go with an AU, decide what kind you’d like and again, start general and work your way into details: do you want to go into fantasy (medieval, mythology, high fantasy, low fantasy and so on), futuristic (post-apocalypse, dystopian, star wars, star trek, steampunk and so on), modern (general, mafia, detectives, cafe and florist, tattoo parlor and so on) and so on.

You probably have a list of existing AUs; you can check what AUs you have in common or you could find one of many AUs lists and pick something that strokes your fancy on there.

Tone/Genre: decide whether you’d like it to start as a slice of life, with your muses eating together and chatting. Perhaps you’d like to start with a fast-paced action: your muses running from someone or chasing someone. Who? It doesn’t matter just yet. You’re picking the tone; the details will come in later. Angst? Horror? Should there be plenty of mutual pinning? Plenty of snarky comebacks? Pick something you’re in the mood for.

Your muse’s relationship: this goes mostly with AUs, but it can go with main verses too. Are they in opposition to one another? Are they working toward a mutual goal? Did their paths happen to run in the same direction for now? Do they know each other already, or are they strangers?

Where are they? And what do they want?

I think this is where plenty of people are trying to start, and this is why they draw on a blank. If you start here, with absolutely nothing decided, no wonder any ideas abscond your head: the sheer vastness of possibilities is overwhelming.

But imagine how different it is if you already have those prepared:

Muse A and Muse B are in a Dragon Raiders AU. The tone is a slice of life with them tending to their dragons. It’s a Rancher AU but with dragons instead of cattle. Muse A is an old rancher, and Muse B is their new student.

Modern, Pizza Place AU. Muse A and Muse B work in two pizzerias opposite each other, owners of which have an old blood feud; no one knows why anymore. Muse A and Muse B are newlyweds and trying hard to hide this fact from their employers.

It’s going to be their main verse. It’s going to be action scene with a bit of silly. Muse A and Muse B happen to break into the same place, and they bump into each other and accidentally trip the alarm. Now they have to run.

Main verse. Muse A and Muse B, and it’s going to be plenty of sugar and fluff. They are having a sleepover and generally being sickly sweet with one another.

If you wish to get into more details with those ideas, I recommend a 'they want that but…’ approach.

The Dragon Rider rancher wants to have a peaceful life, but one of his new hatchlings keeps getting out and harassing local farmers.

Pizza workers want to keep their relationship secret but they are unable to keep their attention off each other and they always catch themselves flirting whenever out.

Our muses want to get out, but that alarm they activated also closed all exits but wait, there’s a hidden passage leading into a labyrinth!

Our grossly sweet muses are grossly sweet, and there’s no but, they are just a mess of cuddles and adorableness.

Here’s an important thing you should remember: don’t be afraid to throw 'stupid ideas’. Throw random things and watch what sticks. The beauty of creative writing is that there’s hardly any objective 'right’ and 'wrong’.

Now, the difficult part.

2. Don’t ever say 'dunno, you pick’; flip a coin if you need to to make a choice.

I know that it’s tempting. I know. It would be so, so easy to dump all the decision making on the other person. Here’s the thing: you both want to dump this duty on the other person.

If you don’t want for your plotting session to look like that:

A: Do we do a thing?

B: Yes!

A: But what?

B: Dunno. Do you have any ideas?

A: Dunno either.

-a thousand years of silence-

Then you both gotta put the grown-up person underpants and take a chunk of the responsibility on your chest and:

Make a choice.

If you do have a preference, amazing! Go with it!

If you don’t have a preference, then think of a couple of options you would be okay with and flip a coin/roll a die/suggest them to the other person so they can narrow it down further.

That’s the thing: you don’t have to pick a single option right off the bat. If your partner asks what tone you’re in a mood for, you can say you’d like investigation or angst, and then they can pick one of the two. Did they have an actual preference, or were fine with both and simply flipped a coin? No one should care, the result is the same: you made a decision!

Congratulations, you’re plotting now.
