County cricket: the week's final over
Six talking points from the weeks county cricket, including praise for James Franklin, James Taylor, Jesse Ryder and Surreys collection of young bowlers
By Gary Naylor for the 99.94 Cricket Blog, part of the Guardian Sport Network
Middlesex, needing points in a rain-affected game at Northwood, almost squeezed a win after James Franklin declared and challenged Somerset to score 219 in 40 overs. His bowlers fell three wickets short with Marcus Trescothicks batsmen still 72 off their target (which they had, unsurprisingly, had a real go at before the wickets/runs equation tilted against them). Middlesexs veteran stand-in skipper knows a bit about rain, having played most of his cricket in New Zealand and England, but his willingness to risk defeat for the chance of victory fashioned a fine finish to a match that had lost 144 overs to the weather. More of this stuff please, as the season reaches the point when the cliche a must-win game applies to matches at both ends of the table.

Talking Horses: Monday’s best bets plus the latest racing news
Johnny Go rates the best bet on the afternoon card at Cartmel in the Lake District
Possibly I am guilty of throwing good money after bad but I shall be following Candy Hill (1.55) in Ayrs opener, having been a bit annoyed by her narrow defeat at Hamilton last time. Keith Dalgleishs filly took a big step forward on her debut effort to be beaten just a neck, with her jockey putting up 1lb overweight and the bit having slipped through her mouth.

County cricket – live!
Sussex v Nottinghamshire and Glamorgan v Lancashire
County crick: the final over of the week
12.46pm BST
The first hour at Horsham has definitely been won by Notts. Taylor managed just one run in the first six overs but then, looking frustrated, he jumped down the pitch to Robinson and struck the bowler over his head for four.
Then the batsman hit the last ball of the over for four to raise the 200 stand. This broke the previous sixth wicket best for Notts against Sussex, the 199 added by Billy Barnes and Harry Daft at Hove in 1887.
12.45pm BST
More records tumbling at Colwyn Bay. Now the best stand ever against Glamorgan beating 401 set by Loye and Ripley at Wantage Road in 1998. Petersen has just gone past 250 and Steve Jamess record of 309 is in danger here. And now Prince has got his double century. Shall we run a sweep on when theyll declare?

12.59pm BST
A miserable double-bogey seven for Andy Sullivan at the par-five 5th. Thats like handing three shots to the field. Hes back to -7. Better English news courtesy of the amateur Ashley Chesters, who delayed turning pro for the best part of a year to compete in this Open, so karma owes him something nice. And nice it is: birdies at 2 and 3, and hes up to -8. Meanwhile heres a missive from curly clown and sometime golf author Simon Farnaby: Im pretty pumped about the Open, though I will get to see none of it til 6.30pm. Balls! Im filming Detectorists so roaming about a field in Suffolk with no reception of any kind. I had a brief 10-minutes internet connection to catch up on the early play on BBC iplayer. Great stuff, a 19th-century kettle sold for 34 pounds. But at least theres going to be a second series of Detectorists, so the BBC are capable of doing something right.
12.43pm BST
Dustin Johnson, the 36-hole leader, capitulated to a miserable 75 yesterday, the second-worst round of a day which saw just about everyone else fill their boots with birdies. Hes picked up a stroke at the opening hole today, so hopefully the big man will have a better time of it in the fourth round. Hes -8. Meanwhile last years US Open champion Martin Kaymer is out like a flash, with birdies at 1, 5 and now 6. Hes -8. And another birdie for Todd, this time at 15. Hes also at -8, five under for his round today. I think the BBC line is pretty insulting, writes Simon Begley, who is free to preach on. A young US amateur likely to be clubhouse leader. An in-form Englishman birdies the first 4 holes. Mickelson doing what he does. But according to the BBC all we care about is the most important story - who will win the Open. I wonder what Irvine, Allis, Cotter and pals make of it?

Adelaide United v Liverpool: pre-season friendly – as it happened
Adelaide United 0-2 Liverpool (Milner 67, Ings 88)
Liverpool round off Australian mini tour with comfortable win at Adelaide Oval
9.34pm AEST
Well, no surprises in the result, with Liverpool entirely comfortable for large swathes of the game. Jordon Ibe impressed for the visitors, while James Milner again proved a goal threat, and with no injuries picked up (at least not any that were immediately apparent), the trip Down Under can only be classed as a success. United, for their part, were game, but ultimately outclassed by what is a far better squad of players. Thats all for tonight, thanks for joining me.
9.26pm AEST
90+4 min And there goes the whistle! All over in Adelaide and that wraps up a pretty successful tour for Liverpool, who head home with two wins from two on Australia soil, off the back of a win in Thailand.

9.19pm AEST
85 min Just five minutes left for Adelaide to snatch an equaliser. But it doesnt look likely, especially with Liverpool playing the ball around with a degree of confidence now.
Tonights official attendance is a grand 53,008 which for a cold winters night is a remarkable number.
9.17pm AEST
84 min Lazar Markovic replaces Joe Allen and is straight into the action as he intercepts a wayward pass and heads off towards the United goal. He plays the ball to Lallana but his backheel doesnt really come off and the move breaks down.

José Mourinho rules out Loïc Rémy joining Crystal Palace or West Ham
Chelsea manager wants striker to fight for place with Falcao and Costa Mourinho: He scored so many important goals for us in crucial moments
Loïc Rémy has been told by José Mourinho he will remain at Chelsea and become an integral part of his strike force rather than leave the Premier League champions in search of guaranteed first-team football.
The French striker, 28, feared his time at Stamford Bridge had come to an end following the loan arrival of the Colombian international Radamel Falcao , the former Atlético Madrid and Porto forward who has joined Mourinhos side on loan from Monaco following a frustrating season at Manchester United.
