Olympic Basketball: Quarter-finals the aim for Iran's Tokyo Olympic bound basketball team
Ramin Tabatabaei, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Basketball Federation (IRIBF), has set reaching the quarter-finals as the men's team's goal at the Tokyo Olympics. Iran has qualified for the Olympic basketball tournament for just the third time, following their exploits at last year's World Cup.

Despite losing all three group games including an eight-point defeat to eventual winners Spain Iran finished as the highest-ranked Asian team at the tournament. They beat Angola and the Philippines in the classification round to achieve that feat and Olympic qualification, edging out China on points difference. Twelve teams are due to compete in two groups in Japan, with the top four in each advancing to the knockout rounds.
"Our first goal is to advance to the next phase since we want to be among the world’s top eight teams," Tabatabaei said, speaking to the Tehran Times.
In the Tokyo Olympic qualification which was held last year, we showed an outstanding performance against Spain, Puerto Rico, Tunisia, Angola, and the Philippines. We were the best Asian side in the tournament which was held in China.
In Tokyo, Iran will have a chance to defend its credibility and we want to qualify for the next stage for the first time. Mehran Shahin tab was the head coach for Iran at the World Cup, and he has a good chance of retaining the role at the Tokyo Olympic. An IRIBF Technical Committee will choose the head coach, according to Tabatabaei.
Iran's basketball team last reached the Olympics in Beijing 2008, losing all five games and finishing 11th out of 12 teams. Iran's participation at next summer's Olympics is a divisive issue and there have been calls for the nation to be banned following the execution of wrestler Navid Afkari.
Tumblr media
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was among the organizations to call for clemency before Afkari accused of stabbing a security guard to death and being involved in demonstrations against the country's regime in 2018 was killed.
Afkari had demanded he was labored into making a false confession. Human Rights Watch said the case was part of a systematic pattern in which Iranian authorities disregard torture allegations and use coerced confessions in trial proceedings. IOC vice-president John Coates hinted an Olympic ban for Iran was unlikely as this execution didn't relate to a sporting event" and numerous other nations competing at the Olympics also still have the death penalty.

Infection control measures will be in place, while organizers have said restrictions on the number of entrants may need to be implemented in response to the coronavirus crisis.
"The venues will be open to the public to the extent that public usage does not interfere with the delivery of and preparations for the Games," Tokyo Olympic supposed in a statement.

Other venues to have been opened for the public in recent months include the Sea Forest Waterway and the Yumenoshima Park Archery Field.

According to Japan's Foreign Ministry, it was the first call between the two since Suga, who succeeded Shinzō Abe after he resigned due to ill health, took office a week ago. Suga received a majority in both houses to confirm his new position as leader of the country, having previously been elected leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, which Abe was previously in charge of.
Bach and Suga reaffirmed their commitment to making the Games "safe and secure" for both athletes and spectators, according to Kyodo News. The IOC and the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee have agreed to a simplifying of the Games due to the financial impact caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the call, Bach congratulated Suga on taking office and stated that the Tokyo Games would be a "historic" event that could bring hope to the Japanese people, according to the Foreign Ministry. Suga then assured Bach, saying that his Government was working hard to keep the COVID-19 virus under control and discussing ways to stop the pandemic affecting the Games with the Organizing Committee.
“Bach said he hoped to visit Japan when it was safe to do so, with the call ending with both sides agreeing that a "strong message" needed to be sent to athletes across the world with the hosting of the Games.”
Tumblr media
The IOC President is hoping to speak to Suga in person at the end of October. Suga also met with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike today for the first time since taking office and the two agreed to cooperate regarding the Games, pushed back to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
We share the view that collaboration between the central government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will contribute to the national attention, Koike told reporters after the meeting. The Tokyo Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021, with the Paralympics following shortly after from August 24 to September 5.

Olympic Basketball: Late NBA season could rule stars out of Tokyo Olympics
The National Basketball Association (NBA) Commissioner Adam Silver has thrown further doubt that the league's players will compete at the Tokyo Olympics after stating that their participation at the Games could be limited. Despite the 2020-2021 season having a tentative start date of December 1, Silver has now said his "best guess" would be that the league will restart in January.
Olympic lovers from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Basketball lovers can book Olympic Basketball Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on reduced prices.
Tumblr media
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2019-2020 NBA season is ongoing - with the NBA Finals set to start on September 30 and potentially end as late as October 13. Based off the tentative start for the 2020-2021 season in December, the NBA Finals for that year were expected to start in June 2021, but now that could come at the same time as the Olympics.
"There are a lot of countless US players, and we may be up in contradiction of a scenario where the top 15 NBA players aren't rival in the Olympics, but other great American players are competing," Silver told CNN yesterday.
Many NBA players participate in the Olympics from other countries. That's something we're going to have to work through. I just say, these are highly unique and unusual circumstances - I think, just as it is for the Olympic Movement, it is for us as well. We're just successful to have to sort of find a way to meld and net those two competing considerations. Although a schedule has not yet been released, Silver has said that the goal is to start the next season in January with a standard 82-game schedule and playoffs.
A normal NBA season starts in late October with the NBA Finals running through to mid-June, with a push back possibly moving into the same period as the Tokyo Olympic Games. Tentatively, these are due to start in April according to provisional plans, ending in June. Currently, the Conference Finals - featuring the top four teams in the NBA - are playing the final set of playoff games before the NBA Finals begin next week.
It is a factor in our planning, added Silver, speaking about the Olympics. It would be tough for us to decide in January based on the Olympics happening on schedule when that's so unclear. Basketball Australia is one of the national governing bodies expressing their concern over the thought of losing their top players for the Games but has also stated nothing can be done until the NBA confirms its position.
"We are continually monitoring the status of leagues at home and abroad where our Australian athletes are playing including the NBA," said Basketball Australia high performance and national team’s general manager Jan Stirling.
Tumblr media
As numerous of our US-based athletes have spoken directly to Basketball Australia or through the media in new times, they are very much looking forward to representing Australia at the Tokyo Olympics. Until there is confirmation from the NBA on exact timings for the 2020-2021 season, we aren't in a position to have discussions with athletes and officials who are on NBA contracts around their availability.
Australia's men's team will be seeking their first Olympic medal in the sport and will look to rely on NBA stars Patty Mills of the San Antonio Spurs, Joe Ingles of Utah Jazz, and Ben Simmons of Philadephia 76ers in their bid, having finished fourth at the Basketball World Cup last year.

Olympic Tables Tennis: Japanese table tennis player and Olympic medal hope Harimoto returns to competition

He featured alongside several other medals hopes for next year's Olympic Games in the Japanese capital, including Ishikawa Kasumi and Niwa Koki, with competitors taking each other on in cross-gender contests.
Tomokazu played Ishikawa, who was part of the team which earned an Olympic silver medal at London 2012 and a bronze medal in Rio 2016. Most of the players had not competed since the Qatar Open in March, with sport then suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"It was my first match in half a year and I was nervous from start to finish," said Tomokazu, according to the Olympic Channel.
In practice, everyone hits everything hard but it doesn't work that way in matches. Practice alone isn't enough. It's comforting to be able to hit live balls again. I got rid of more than half the concerns that had built up in the last six months.
Tumblr media
Tomokazu earned a silver medal in the men's singles and mixed team events at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. He also claimed the singles title at the 2018 International Table Tennis Federation World Tour Grand Finals in Incheon.
It was announced in January that Tomokazu would be part of Japan’s national table tennis squad for the Tokyo Olympic. He will have to wait another year, however, with the Olympics postponed until July 23 to August 8, 2021, due to the pandemic.

Olympic Boxing: Britain's McCormack and Price top boxing world rankings as Tokyo Olympic countdown continues
Britain’s Lauren Price and Pat McCormack have been ranked as the number one boxer in their weight divisions as the countdown continues to the rescheduled Tokyo Olympic Games. The latest update to the world rankings has placed seven members of the GB Boxing team in the top five in their weight class.
Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Boxing fans can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
Tumblr media
GB Boxing says the rise of Price and McCormack reflects their achievements over the past two years, with both boxers having secured a medal at every major tournament they have taken part in during the period. Price is the reigning world champion in the women’s middleweight division and has not lost a bout since November 2018. Price has secured gold medals at the Minsk 2019 European Games and the World Championships in the same year, as well as triumphing at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The latter event does not count towards the International Boxing Association world rankings.
"I have won just about everything over the last couple of years and to now be ranked number one in the world is a great achievement," Price said.
It is something I am very proud of. The only thing left is the Olympics so I am completely focused on Tokyo next year and aiming to complete my set of medals. McCormack tops the men’s welterweight rankings after winning gold at Minsk 2019, as well as silver at the 2019 World Championships in Russia. A clash of heads in the second round of the final saw him sustain a cut, which led to the contest being stopped. The judges ultimately scored the contest 4:0 in favor of his Russian opponent Andrey Zamkovoy.
"I have had a good few year and it’s great that the rankings reflect this," McCormack said.
I was gutted to lose the world final, particularly given the way it happened with the clash of heads, but I am focused on Tokyo now. Knowing that I am ranked number one in the world is a big confidence boost that will help to push me on. Featherweight Peter McGrail is ranked third in the world rankings, after securing bronze medals at both the World Championships and European Games last year.
Ben Whittaker is ranked third in the light-heavyweight division following a silver medal at the European Games and bronze at the World Championships. Flyweight Galal Yafai and heavyweight Cheavon Clarke are ranked fifth in their respective weight classes, while women’s featherweight Karriss Artingstall has risen to fifth in her weight class after the European Championship silver and World Championship bronze medals.
Tumblr media
McGrail and Yafai are already assured of places at Tokyo Olympic after qualifying for the Games before the suspension of the European Olympic qualifier earlier this year.
"The boxers have performed very well over the last two years and it is satisfying to see their achievements being recognized in the world rankings," said Rob McCracken, GB Boxing’s performance director.
Elite international boxing is extremely competitive and getting harder all the time. To have so many boxers ranked in the top five in the world is a fantastic achievement by the boxers and all of the staff at GB Boxing, especially the coaches who do a superb job working with the boxer’s day-in-day-out in the gym and in taking them to competitions all over the world.

Olympic Athletics: Van Niekerk "comfortable and confident" over Olympic title defense after return to competition
Wayde van Niekerk revealed he is comfortable and confident about defending his 400 meters title at next year's Olympic 2020 Games in Tokyo. He won the men’s one-lap race at a European Tour meeting in Switzerland in 45.58. Van Niekerk had been recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury picked up in 2017, and suffered another setback earlier this year when he tested positive for COVID-19.
"It was a good ice breaker, considering the circumstances I’ve had to go through the last few months, not being able to be as consistent as I’d like to be," he supposed, as reported by The Citizen.
It has been a bit of a roller coaster year, but I feel comfortable and confident for the upcoming season and the Olympic 2020 Games. I still have enough time to get myself ready for the Games, so it’s just about putting in the correct work and making sure I’m investing in the right areas for me to be ready. For now, it’s time to get back to the drawing board and start sharpening up the edges.
Tumblr media
Despite the encouraging return to competition, Van Niekerk decided to withdraw from the Diamond League meeting in Rome, which took place yesterday. Instead, he refunded to South Africa from his European camp to focus on the 2021 season.
Van Niekerk is a two-time world champion in the 400m, triumphing in 2015 and 2017, and also earned a world silver medal in the 200m at the latter rivalry in London.  The 28-year-old is set to compete at his second Olympic Games at Tokyo Olympic, now suspended to July 23 to August 8 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Olympic Swimming: Australian Swimming Championships to replicate Tokyo Olympic morning finals
The Australian Swimming Championships in 2021 are set to follow a similar format to the Tokyo Olympics, with finals taking place in the morning. Action will follow the Age Championships, featuring junior swimmers and Para-swimmers, which is slated to run from April 5 to 12. It is set to be the first national event held in the city since the 2018 Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Trials before the Commonwealth Games hosted in Gold Coast that year.
With the addition of morning finals, Olympic hopefuls can replicate the preparation they will need to compete in early races at Tokyo Olympic. There are 37 planned finals in swimming at Tokyo Olympic, and all are scheduled for morning sessions to align with the American audience. This was requested by broadcaster NBC, one of the biggest networks in the United States and currently the rights holders for the Games.
Morning sessions will start at 10.30 am in Tokyo, compared to the Rio 2016 Games where the earliest sessions would begin at 1 pm local time. Tokyo Olympic has now been re-arranged for next year as a result of the pandemic.
Tumblr media
"We know this has been a tough year for swimmers all around the country with so much uncertainty and opportunities for racing being limited but we hope this announcement will give all athletes around Australia something to work towards and look forward to," said Swimming Australia chief executive Leigh Russell.
The Championships will also act as a selection event for the World Junior Championships and the Oceania Championships. We acknowledge that it is still very challenging for our athletes in Victoria with ongoing restrictions in pools, added Russell.
We will continue to work with Swimming Victoria to ensure that swimmers will not be disadvantaged in qualifying and will be in a position to provide more clarity in the coming weeks. Currently, Victoria is deemed to be the state in Australia most affected by the virus, with its Parliament shutting today due to a security guard testing positive.

Tokyo Olympics chief expecting IOC approval of 50 to 60 items to simplify Olympics
Around "50 to 60" items aimed at simplifying the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games are set to be approved in the coming weeks, according to Organizing Committee chief executive Toshirō Mutō. Speaking after the latest meeting of the Tokyo Olympic Executive Board today, Mutō said he expects an agreement on the items that will be reached following discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission on September 24 and 25.
Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 Tickets from our online platform for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Opening Ceremony fans can book Olympic Opening Ceremony Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
Tumblr media
The measures – which target reducing costs and ensuring the safety of athletes and spectators – including the number of people involved in the Games, infrastructure, and Ceremonies, Mutō added. The Tokyo Olympic chief admitted the exact cost of the items would not be available until December.
"We imagine to have an agreement on the substances, but the ballpark number on the reduction won't be obtainable immediately because we need to thoroughly inspect the numbers," Mutō supposed.
Mutō also said not to expect a decision on if or how spectators will be able to attend the Olympics and Paralympics, pushed back to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, by the end of the year. Organizers have repeatedly stressed that they are including crowds in their planning for the rescheduled Games, but leading officials from both the IOC and Tokyo Olympic have acknowledged holding events without spectators is a possibility. How fans can attend the Games is set to be the main subject of a meeting of a panel assessing coronavirus countermeasures in November.
"When it comes to the specific numbers and how much of the percentage of total capacity should be allowed, I can't say whether that will be decided by December," Mutō said.
We need to keep a close eye on the situation with the COVID-19 spread. We shouldn't make a decision right before Games time, but definitely, we should observe the situation thoroughly. The first set of COVID-19 countermeasures are set to be revealed by the end of the year, a timeline reiterated by IOC vice-president and Tokyo Olympic Coordination Commission chairman John Coates today.
Tumblr media
Border controls, COVID-19 countermeasures at venues, plans for dealing with infected people, pre-Games training camps, rules for public transport, and the necessity of an isolation period upon entry into Japan are all being discussed.
"Our decision at the moment is to go ahead," Coates, who recently claimed Tokyo Olympic will take place next year irrespective of the coronavirus pandemic, supposed.
What we wait for is to decide what counter-measures we need to go ahead with, to proceed depending on what stage COVID is at. The extent of the ceremonies, the extent of the crowd participation, any necessary quarantine when they arrive in Japan.  All of those things. And by the time we get to the end of the year, we'll assess what counter-measures we'll need to apply.

Japanese Olympic baseball manager believes the host nation can win gold at Tokyo Olympic
The manager of the men's Japanese baseball team has said his side is still aiming for gold and hopes to "share the joy of a win" with fans at the postponed Tokyo Olympics. Atsunori Inaba, who was previously a player in Beijing 2008, said he was scouting players for the team ahead of the Games. He is hoping to guide the host nation to the gold medal to boost spirits following the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused the delay of the Olympics.

"I'm scouting a lot of players," said Inaba.
Due to the COVID-19 limitations, I'm not showing up at the venues very often, but I watch a lot of television. I'm confident that the Games will happen next summer. I want to prepare well for the Games.
"My intention is winning a gold medal; I want to share the joy with all our fans."
The national team is set to hold a camp at the end of the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) season, which would involve a series being played, so Inaba can look at the up-and-coming talent from across the country. Japan will head into the Games as one of the favorites having won the World Baseball Softball Confederation Premier12 title in November.
Tumblr media
"I still remember the joy and the celebration," said Inaba.
I want to build the Olympic team on the foundations of the Premier12 rosters. As I supposed, I'm also considering new and younger players. Currently, the NPB season is continuing under strict health guidelines. Japan is ranked number one in the world in men's baseball by a clear margin, in front of the United States, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, and Mexico.

Tokyo Olympic should be held "at any cost," says Olympic Minister
Japan's Olympic Minister Seiko Hashimoto said Tokyo Olympic should be held next year "at any cost". Hashimoto, appointed in September 2019, said the preparations of athletes was her motivation. Tokyo Olympic has been moved back to next year due to the coronavirus pandemic but doubts remain about the Olympic and Paralympic Games going ahead safely with the impact of COVID-19 in 2021 still uncertain.
"All the people complicated with the Games are working together to make, and the athletes are also making substantial efforts toward next year under the conditions they've been handed," supposed Hashimoto in a news conference.
I think we have to grip the Games at any cost. I want to distillate all our efforts on events in contradiction of the coronavirus. Hashimoto was replying to remarks made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) vice-president and the head of the IOC's Tokyo Olympic Coordination Commission, John Coates.
Yesterday, the Australian claimed that the Olympics "will take place with or without COVID. Hashimoto has the most Olympic appearances of any Japanese athlete, representing the country as a speed skater in four consecutive Winter Games from 1984 to 1994 and as a cyclist in three consecutive Summer Games from 1988 to 1996.
Tumblr media
She won a bronze medal in the 1500 meters speed skating event at Albertville 1992. Hashimoto was also Japan's Chef de Mission at two Winter Olympic Games - Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 - and one Summer Games when she fulfilled the role in Rio 2016.
She is also President of the Japan Skating Federation. Initially scheduled for July 24 to August 9 this year, the Olympics are now scheduled to take place between July 23 and August 8, 2021. The Paralympics are then planned from August 24 to September 5.
A Japanese Government panel held its first meeting on Friday to plan steps to counter the pandemic if the Games go ahead. This was in coordination with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee and was headed by Kasuhiro Sugita.
There is the aim of producing robust countermeasures by the end of the year, while a scaled-back and more frugal Games has been promised. A further four meetings are expected to take place before the end of November.
Issues due to being discussed include travel restrictions for foreign athletes, anti-virus measures at the Athletes' Village and Games venues, and how to handle spectators. Tokyo Olympic spokesman Masa Takaya did not share the same overwhelming optimism as Hashimoto, but he did state that he believed work was heading in the right direction.
Tumblr media
Japan has been boosted by sporting events being held worldwide, albeit under strict restrictions. There continues to be the talk of allowing more fans into stadiums in the country for baseball and football matches, but that has yet to be implemented.
"This has been a big, big reassurance for the staff members of Tokyo Olympic," supposed Takaya.
We texture that is another step towards where we can see sports in the act in our society. Japan now denies entry to people from 146 countries and areas as part of its fight in contradiction of the coronavirus pandemic. Those who are allowable to enter are requested to spend two weeks in quarantine. Predictably, around 11,000 athletes from more than 200 nations and lands will compete at the Olympics in Tokyo.

I am sure it is a moment that is being celebrated by her family and friends as well. I also want to thank Rose for her contribution to artistic swimming and the Australian Olympic Team in Rio.

Whether it’s walking into the Village, the Opening Ceremony, your first day of competition - there are so many overwhelming positive experiences, try to take in as much as possible. I know Hannah and the team will put in a performance they will be proud of. I took a lot of time thinking about whether to retire, but I was ready to move on and I’m so lucky to go out on my terms. The number of new coronavirus cases spikey previous this month, with Tokyo Olympic journalism a record 462 cases on August 1. While the latest number of new bags in the capital was stated as 236, the number of contagions has progressively dropped in recent weeks. The daily count countrywide has now been below 1,000 for four conventional days.
"I think the situation is much better than before,” Koike told Reuters.
2We will do our best to prevent coronavirus infections here in Japan and also to welcome the athletes from all over the world. The postponed Olympics are due to take place until August 8 next year, shadowed by the Paralympics from August 24 to September 5.
Doubts continue over the Games due to the coronavirus pandemic, with surveys lately skimpy doubt among members of the public and helpers. Coronavirus countermeasures have been watched as energetic in providing comfort and allowing the Games to take place as deliberate.

The process will be led by the Japanese Government as part of a three-party council, which will also feature the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee. Conferences are set to begin this fall to determine robust countermeasures, which are predictable to be announced by the end of 2020.

Olympic Volleyball: Brazil's women's volleyball head coach says three players certainties for Tokyo Olympic
Brazil's women's volleyball head coach Zé Roberto has named three players who will definitely be part of his official team selection for the postponed Tokyo Olympics. When asked who would be guaranteed a place at the Games, Zé Roberto said outside hitters Gabi Guimaraes and Natalia Pereira and opposite Tandara Caixa, assuming they are not injured.

"Gabi is one of the best passers in the world right now," said the three-time Olympic champion coach.
Her transitory rate in the Turkish League was over 80 percent, which is really imposing, and when you have a player execution so well at the international level, she's surely part of your side. Natalia and Tandara, too, are players who have showed what they can do at the international level and they will surely be in Tokyo Olympic if they are healthy and in good form.
Zé Roberto also mentioned 33-year-old middle-blocker Thaisa Menezes as one of the players he would like to have on his team. However, the two-time Olympic champion has not been part of the national side since the 2018 International Volleyball Federation World Championship.
Having had a stellar season in the Brazilian Superliga, she has not closed the door on a national team comeback, but also stressed that she would not make a decision until the end of the next club season, which she will play with Itambe Minas.
She has recovered from a really serious knee injury and had a wonderful club season in the Superliga, added Zé Roberto. Minas has occupied great care of her and she's in great form and substantially very stout. In my belief, she's the best middle blocker in the world, so I'd clearly love to have her.
Zé Roberto is heading into his seventh Olympics and has said his job has not been made easier due to a difficult selection process. There are some players who are more obvious as they've been with the team for some years and have been playing key roles for us, the 66-year-old added. Nonetheless, it's very problematic to get to the final assortment of 12 names that go to the Olympic 2020 games.
Tumblr media
I jerk with a higher list with 60 players or so and go from there. There are always starts for players who do well in their bats and show they can have a big influence in the national side, so the next months will be significant concerning the final choices I still need to make.
Brazil will look to bounce back from their disappointment at Rio 2016, when the reigning champions were knocked out on their home turf in the quarter-finals by China. Zé Roberto coached the women to Olympic gold at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, and did the same with the men at Barcelona 1992.

Olympic Judo: Deguchi aims for Canada's first Olympic judo gold after switching from Japan
World number one Christa Deguchi has spoken of her ambition to win Canada's first Olympic gold medal in judo at the Tokyo Olympic Games, three years after switching allegiance to the nation from Japan. In 2017, Deguchi changed her competitive nationality from her birthplace of Japan to Canada in a bid to qualify for the Olympics. She was born in Nagano to a Japanese mother, but her father hails from Canada.  After being approached in 2012 to switch nationality she refused but later changed her mind.

"Canada first contacted me when I was in high school," Deguchi said.
I was on Team Japan at the time and didn't think I was going to change countries. Her coach who had trained her since she was three – advised Deguchi to choose the country that would give her the best chance of making the Games and she now does not have to battle Japanese judoka for her place.
Shortly before her 22nd birthday the legal age in Japan to choose citizenship for those with dual nationalities she announced her decision to represent her father's homeland. However, she faced a potential issue with her dual-nationality as the International Judo Federation requires athletes to not compete for three years after switching countries. Due to not competing for Japan for a while, she faced little time on the sidelines, however.
Deguchi is heading towards the Games in fine form having won gold at last year's World Championships in Tokyo at 57 kilograms. She defeated former Japanese team-mate, Tsukasa Yoshida, in the gold medal bout.
"Winning gold for Canada was a special moment and a high point in my career," Deguchi said.
I try not to think about the details of the match or what results I need to get I try to keep my mind as blank as possible and just focus on my fight and how I am going to throw my opponent. The 24-year-old has continued to train in Japan having moved to Yamanashi from Nagano for university.
One of the most exciting potential judo showdowns is between herself and Yoshida, who stated after the 2019 World Championships: If I meet her at the finals at Tokyo Olympic, I will win. Deguchi is still to secure her position for the Games but has one eye on gold.
Tumblr media
"I want to fight a few times before the Games and I still have to compete against a team-mate in Canada in a play-off to secure the Olympic spot," she said.
Of course, my goal is to win Canada's first-ever judo gold medal but I don't think I am the favorite. The 57kg category is one of the toughest divisions in judo I will have to be at my best to accomplish my goal.

Japanese men's Olympic hockey captain "cannot wait" for the Tokyo Olympic Games
Japanese men's hockey captain Manabu Yamashita says he "cannot wait" for next year's Olympic Games. Yamashita made his comments after Japan's 52-year wait for the men's team to again feature at the Olympics was extended by 12 months following the postponement of Tokyo Olympic until 2021. Japan's men made their last Olympic appearance in 1968, but qualified as hosts this time around.

"I am very excited and I cannot wait for the Olympic 2020 Games to take place in my country," Yamashita said, speaking to the International Hockey Federation's YouTube channel.
I feel extremely lucky. I will be very proud to be representing my country and singing the national anthem on the pitch. Japan produced a big upset two years ago to win gold in men's hockey at the 2018 Asian Games - while the country's women's team also left Indonesia with a gold medal.
The men edged past Malaysia in the final via a shootout, having beaten Pakistan in the semi-finals and finished behind India in their group. It was the team's first Asian Games medal since 1970 and arguably the greatest achievement in its history, with only Olympic silver in 1932 able to rival it.
Tumblr media
That is the only time Japan have won a medal in five previous Olympic appearances. India will again be in Japan's group at Tokyo Olympic joined by Spain, New Zealand, Argentina and Australia. Currently 15th in the world rankings, Japan are set to be the lowest-ranked team at the tournament.
The coronavirus pandemic - the reason for the Games' postponement - has also had an impact on the team's preparations, but Yamashita says they have stayed in contact throughout these testing times. We had weekly meetings where we discussed strategy, explained the 31-year-old. But we also had several online fun sessions where we did a lot of dancing and drawing. We had ad-hoc meetings and did some activities for kids.
