A response to ‘Portrait’ brief
This is a zine named ‘Overdressed’, having spent so much time at home in the past year, I am trying to portray the possibilities of having fun indoors with a more humourous approach.

A school project on Chinese mythology
Chinese mythology and folklore is a topic that I have always wanted to do more research on and I had the chance to do so for my A-level project, in which I explored clay sculpting. But looking back at it now, I can see that the project lacked thorough research and depth and everything was too predictable and conventional. So for my current project, which I am working on now, I am exploring Chinese mythology again but taking everything I have learnt from the previous project. This time I am going into it from the perspective of portraying Chinese culture through the mythology and food, I want to demonstrate my favourite part of Chinese culture in a more interesting and educational way. To combine both of these elements, I came up with the idea of ghosts (inspired by Chinese folklore) running a takeaway serving Chinese food in the underworld. I am going to focus on character designs and presenting it in a way that is accurate to the tales that people native to China grew up with.
A artist that inspired me a lot for the new project is Hwashin, a Korean illustrator who combines traditional Korean culture with her unique illustrative style. It creates a contrast between the innocent looking children and the complicated traditional environment that surrounds them. Visually, I really like the amount of detail in her illustrations, her use of repetitive patterns makes the drawings a lot more lively and realistic.

My inspirations
This is my digital painting of a scene from one my favourite film “In the Mood for Love”, directed by Wong Kar-Wai. He is my favourite director, whether it’s the cinematography or the storytelling, it had a big impact on how I view my style and gives me a direction as to what I want to grow into as an artist moving forward.

“An example of a successful piece of visual communication”
This is an album cover for a band named ‘Fools and Idiots’, illustration by Maria Medem. I was originally attracted by the album cover which encouraged me to listen to the music. Now, this is one of my favourite albums of all time. I think the illustration perfectly captures the dreamy yet vibrant atmosphere of the music and very accurately translates the mood of the sound visually.
