Zolu AU, where ones soulmate feels all the pain as a dull ache, their other half feels.

Zoro has always been in pain, a dull ache just under the surface that he holds onto like a thread that anchors him into the world. He considered it just as another way to train, especially on the bad days when the pain would be too much to move with for anyone else. Its familiar pulse helps him more than anyone knows after Kuina dies. It is a constant thing where he does not have much of that left. He dreads the day the pain gets so powerful and stops. He hopes it never happens, and if it does, it will not be before he meets the one whose pain he carries.

Luffy, wild child, abandoned by most guardians and trying to keep with older boys and prove that he is strong to everyone around him. He does not quite feel pain in the same way, being made of rubber, the dull ache at the joints at the muscles is not something he can feel. So he assumes that he has no soulmate, as everyone feels pain sometimes as far as he is concerned. He is okay with that.

Until one day, the day Kuina died, Luffy feels more pain than even the time he had to protect Ace and Sabo's secret. He is out for days, a mess as he feels *the emotional pain* zoro is going through. He wants to run out right away to find his other half, age limits they agreed on be damned. Who cares how old he is if his *friend* is hurting.

Ace and Sabo talk him down, but only because Luffy barely has the strength to move.

There are flashes of pain after that, but nothing as big. Luffy counts down the days until he can set out with even more excitement.

He hates the idea that he is hurting someone, especially when Sabo 'dies', the guilt and loss that twosts is the worst. He also has to help Ace, who lost his soulmate, but they are young and fumbling.

When he finally sets out as they all agreed, he lets his instincts guide him until he is standing before Zoro.

Zoro sucks in a breath as the constant pain he has felt all his life dissapears, leaving an absence that is replaced by Luffy, his light and his sun as he stands there demanding him to join his crew. The idea that kept him going is real and is right there. He did not think that they would ever meet as he has wondered the sea for years now, with no luck. Not that he was looking. He knew the pain would disappear if he found them, and well, maybe it would be better if it styaed a concept.

Yet here he is, that smile bright holding the freedom and future Zoro did not even know he was looking for.

Honestly I should talk about the ace experience more. I don’t see enough. Like–obviously it’s dehumanizing to be repeatedly compared to robots or aliens but uh…sometimes it feels like that?? 

My husband will get all horny while I’m, I don’t know, changing out of sweaty gardening clothes. And I’ll be like, “But we have to make lunch?? I stink? Now is not a good time?? Logic?” And clearly it’s not about logic to him. He is experiencing the entire scenario very differently. And I’m here like, 

Or the times where you realize that like, having an actual physiological reaction to attractive people is not some enculturated metaphor, and people are actually doing that all around you all the time, and you’re like, Ah, clearly my studies of human culture have been incomplete. I have missed a critical psychosocial component. Many things now appear in a different light. *takes notes on holopad*

Because AO3 is that site. Because AO3 was that site long before you decided AO3 was better than the sites you bullied us off of before, and I can promise you if someone somehow comes up with a fanfic site you like better specifically for the 'gross stuff' you'll try to bully us off that too so you can benefit from it.

AO3's specific core purpose is to preserve fanfiction, yes, but it was also instigated as a host site for the fanfiction that kept getting yeeted off other platforms like Wattpad. Its designed to preserve all fanfiction, not just the fanfiction you, personally, think is 'allowed' to be written.

AO3 is the site for all the gross stuff the freaks make. We've been there just as long as you. We've been funding it just as long as you have. AO3 has specifically said you have a place here. The timeline was literally:

Wattpad/FF.net/LiveJournal purge fanfics > AO3 is born > The people who's fics got purged moved over to AO3 > AO3 gains popularity as the best functioning site > The people who pushed for the fics to be purged off Wattpad move to AO3 > The same people try to push for AO3 to purge fics.

AO3's source coding is open-access. You go make a polished, strict, rigid site where nothing 'icky' is allowed. You go make a site where you can control what is hosted. We already have our space.

Thinking of the larger context of LOTR and like, the fellowship swapping old war stories and shit and Sam just says “Yeah I killed a huge spider…Shelob, I think?”

And Gandalf just blinks and is like, “You what now?”

“Yeah, killed it. Had to save Frodo”
