Responding to an innovative Community Arts Project comprised of a series of online workshops led by visual artist Charlie Murphy and creative writer Laurie Bolger,a diverse group of online participants created artworks, creative writings, photography, video, and sculpture back in early 2021. They have creatively recorded the spaces, landscapes, objects, feelings, and rituals that have shaped their experiences of COVID-19 over the last year. Inspired by artefacts and anecdotes from the museum’s collection, Message in a Bottle digitally and physically captures personal experiences of lockdown within the historic interiors, vessels, and artefacts of the Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret. The resulting panopoly of digital projections and physical interventions expose poignant and startling contrasts and resonances between past and present public health crises. Curated and produced by Charlie Murphy, this exhibition has been developed in collaboration with new technologist Robin Bussell, Laurie Bolger, Monica Walker, and over 30 online participants from across the UK and Europe. Additional Information: Charlie Murphy is an interdisciplinary artist and educator working with glass, light, new technologies, performance, photography and video. Charlie and technologist Robin Bussell work as collaborative team Instagram @thephotonicexcitors, www.charliemurphy.co.uk Laurie Bolger is an English poet, stand-up and presenter based in London. She recently published her debut poetry collection ‘Box Rooms.’ www.lauriebolger.com *This project was made possible with the support of public funding from Arts Council England, The Artists Agency and Kingston School of Art.* by The Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret

The Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret Featured Object The Champetier de Ribes Bag (19th century) Museum Collection The Champetier de Ribes Bag Written and Voiced by Harriet Carter The Champetier de Ribes bag is an obstetrics tool designed to artificially dilate a woman’s cervix in order to induce labour. Made from waterproof silk and covered in a thin layer of rubber, the bags were designed to compact easily to the thickness of a finger. The collapsed bag was inserted into the uterus by a doctor using a pair of specially designed forceps. A long rubber tube extended from the nozzle of the bag and protruded out of the vagina. Through this, sterilized warm water was pumped in order to slowly distend the bag. Fully inflated, the bag held 17oz of water. The nineteenth century was a dangerous time for pregnant women. In 1874 England recorded its highest ever mortality rate where an average of 69.3 women died per 10,000 births (around 7%). Today the mortality rate is 0.8 women per 10,000 births (0.008%). About half of these women died due to complications of labour, slowly bleeding to death over a long birth. By inducing labour at an often earlier, crucial stage the de Ribes bag saved thousands of women’s lives. Pumping is a count down. It is a slowing down exercise in order to be able to allow the mind free. A set of images, rhymes and potentialities that appear from the in between. A dazzling (dazing) landscape. What happens when you become drowsy enough, where do we go? Inhale into my body, is a collaborative short film exploring echoes of imagined narratives and past experiences through an archive of objects at the Old Operating Theatre. The film navigates through the lens of an 1874 Chloroform Inhaler - a small, bronze and velvet object, speaking in streams of its poetic consciousness. In the Triage project film, I wanted to capture the ambience of the old operating theatre by creating a contemplative experience building up to a moment of silence. This film builds through a series of different shots from the old operating theatre set to Sarabande by G.F. Handel played by myself on the harpsichord. This piece is in D minor creating a melancholic mood, suggestive of traumas past. The film ends in the main iconic space of the theatre, where the music stops and fades into the space. My objective was to create a moment of contemplation realised in silence, through the contrast of imagery; panning of the camera to the almost handheld still. My inspiration for this was the film MA: Space / Time in the garden of Ryoan-ji (1989), by Arata Isozaki and Taka Limura, in which they used sound and silence with camera panning and stills to create a reflective space. Cervical dilation is the opening of the cervix, the entrance to the uterus, during childbirth, miscarriage, induced abortion, or gynecological surgery. Cervical dilation may occur naturally, or may be induced surgically or medically. The cervical dilator is a medical instrument allowing this medical opening. It opens up the female inside, in order for the surgeon to enter, to perform. Dissecting the Dreamed Body is a film that follows the cervical dilator into the old operating theatre, with its spectators, (male) surgeons and drug induced, hallucinating patients. As long as the daylight allowed, The medical instruments were waiting to become an extension of his body, allowing him to cut, dissect, open up, separate, and examine. Enlarge the subtle movements of the surgeons hand. In this work I am using sound and image to discuss the relationship between breathing and the body. During the epidemic, people’s eyes were overly focused on the mouth, nasal cavity and masks. I was inspired by the old facial mask preserved in the Old Operating Theatre. For the sound in the work, I read poetry while running, my language deconstructs and distorts under the pressure of gasping for breath. @qwy980414 by The Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret

Deming Huang's work explores ideas of poetics, queer story and assemblage of plants and techno-objects. He ('they' when in poetry form) uses metaphysic materials like text, bio-materials and the every day. He (they) built this film for the people who came before him (they); the unheard voices: because of the same struggle, melancholy and desire, they become one. In the future, he (they) wants to make works for the dead and the living, the suffering ones; long live the ghosts that society fails to see. @rcasculpture @mingdmh deminghuang.com by The Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret
