Sorry, YH again. I didn't get to mention that I want to either be a psych prof or a grade school counselor or become a therapist for adolescents. And...well if I suffer from a mental illness, like depression, can that keep me from becoming a therapist? Do you have any advice on how to know if I could handle a career in therapy? Again, thank you so much for taking your time to read and answer my asks. I hope I wasn't a bother!
Hi!
People with mental health diagnoses work as clinicians all the time. They also work as peers, who are people with lived experience with a mental health issue or other issue who work with their peers providing services, support, and/or advocacy, most typically.
However, if your mental health keeps you from being able to work effectively in general, then therapy is unlikely to be a good choice, given how emotionally and mentally taxing it is. And there certainly are people with mental health diagnoses that really aren’t a good fit for therapy, because it is detrimental for their own recovery, or because what therapy requires isn’t a good fit for their needs, or because it’s too difficult to be an objective clinician when working with people who they feel they share so much with, etc. (There are also lots of people who just aren’t a good fit for clinical work, with or without a diagnosis).
Here are some questions to consider:
The first is, can you take good care of yourself and be in this field? Can you prioritize your mental health while still being in a situation that will include highly emotional and triggering material? Do you have a thorough self care strategy?
The second is, can you provide high quality and ethical treatment even when you are not having a good mental health day? Can you separate yourself out of the situation and prioritize your client while they are in your office? Can you give your energy and empathy to that person?
The third is, can you decide when you need to take time or get help so you prevent relapse, burn out, and unethical treatment? Can you accurately assess when you need help or when you’re having trouble managing? Will you be able to ask for help or use good coping skills when you need to? Will you be able to leave the field entirely if you need to?
You might also find this ask helpful.
