Going For A Run With Penny In Central Park
Penny is a high-energy Boxer mix rescue from NC who is named for her copper color. She's goofy and very friendly with her whole family including her human baby sister. Penny enjoys, cuddling, tug-of-war, and bananas! Penny's mom Gina won this photoshoot in a silent auction and all of the proceeds went to support the Domestic Violence Project.

Fun In The Sun With Ned & Ted; The Boston Terrier Siblings
I had the pleasure of meeting up with Ned, Ted, and their human Janet downtown the other day. Ned is an old lady (13!), who has been through a lot, and she's the love of her mom's life. Ted is tinier and goofier, he's 9 years old and has been a part of the family for 4 years. Despite different ages, and different amounts of time with the family, both of them got them got the better end of the deal when Janet inherited them from their dads. Ned and Ted enjoy chasing balls, a good game of tug-of-war, and relaxing on their mom's bed or in the sun.

Relaxing home photoshoot with Chloe the Cocker and Stella the Jack Russell
Chloe is a lover and a floppy little teddy bear. She looks like a medium sized cocker but is actually really tiny under all of her fluffy fur! Her favorite things include tennis balls, cuddling, and a good belly rub.
Stella is a daddy's girl, athlete, and smarty pants. If there is a gate up between her and her Dad, she will find a way around it in record time. She is a soccer star when there is a tennis ball anywhere near her paws!
Both Chloe and Stella are senior girls, and pretty mellow. They’re very friendly and laid back once they realize that they are around dog people. Both love spending time on the couch, playing fetch, and eating absolutely anything.

When You Find A Lost Dog
Yesterday I was sitting down to dinner with my fiancé's family and we were waiting on her sister to come from work. When her sister arrived she had a dog with her. She told us that she had found this dog wondering in the road and brought it back because it was clearly lost, but unfortunately had no collar. The dog seemed to have just been groomed and was incredibly friendly. We found out through trial and error that the dog new several tricks (sit, shake, and hug at least), and we noticed that he also had a bandana around his neck from a local groomer. We contacted the groomer and they said that yes, this dog had just been in, and his name is Harley. Unfortunately we were unable to get in touch with Harley's owners and the groomers wouldn't give us their address, but now that we knew Harley was friendly and not going to be dangerous to anybody I thought it would be a good opportunity to get to know him. I sat out with him a while to get him used to me and the new environment and gave him more than a few treats. Harley was very playful and wanted nothing more than belly rubs and to run around. Once Harley seemed comfortable I thought I'd take my camera out so that we could go door to door with some pictures and ask if anybody knew where he came from while we waited on the groomers to keep trying Harley's owners.
This story does have a happy ending! Around 11pm that night we got a call from Harley's owners saying that they wanted to come and pick him up, so Harley is back home and safe with his family.

Photoshoot with Billy the Cock-A-Chon in Central Park
Billy is a 10-month old Cocker Spaniel/Bichon Frise mix, and basically a real-life teddy bear. He was named after Billy's Bakery in Chelsea because his humans have a sweet tooth. Billy is a bundle of energy and a very kind dog. Between running around in non-stop circles and rolling around in the grass for a few minutes, we also met a few dogs along the way and Billy got along really well with all of them. He also found a stick that we played fetch with for a little while. Hoenstly, the only challenge I had photographing Billy was that he kept wanting to come over and cuddle with me. Billy knows a whole host of tricks and was thrilled to sow them off for the camera.

Brownie
Brownie is a 17 year is Teacup Poodle from Western New York. He was named that by his owner Sarah when she was 6 years old because he was brown. Brownie is laid back dog that enjoys sleeping, napping, and generally relaxing, unless of course there is string cheese involved, in which case you would never know he was as old as he is. He is full of energy even though he can't move very fast due to his age, and one of his favorite things in the world is lounging on his mom's pillow with his stinky breath right in her face.

Photoshoot In The Park With Dustin
Last week I had the pleasure of going to the park for the first time this year. The weather is finally starting to warm up and the flowers are blooming, so when I spoke to Rachel about photographing her Terrier mix, Dustin, I couldn't think of a better location than outside at the park!
Rachel owns and runs Leash and Learn, and she adopted Dustin was adopted in June 2012 from New York City Care and Animal Control. He was only days away from euthanasia and was not allowed to leave the shelter without an experienced handler taking him in. He failed tests at the shelter with dogs, people, and kids, and was obviously maltreated in his former home. However, with lots of hard work he has turned into an amazing dog. He is very laid back and has a very happy go lucky attitude. He became a Trick Dog Champion in July of 2013, starred in a short film entitled “Introducing Parker Dowd,” and most recently played Sandy in Riverdale Professional Childrens Theatre's production of Annie. His amazing transformation was also featured in the local Manhattan newspapers “Our Town” and “West Side Spirit” when we found out that at four years of age he had developed cataracts and was blind in one eye, which required an expensive surgery to repair.

What's In My Photography Bag?
by Dan Wright
originally published on Savage Universal Blog
Bags:
Think Tank Airport Commuter
We can’t talk about what’s in my bag without talking about the bag itself. I actually carry two bags, and the first one that we’ll talk about is my camera bag. I am a huge Think Tank fan, and I like compact bags that are still large enough for me to store whatever I may need, so for me there was no other choice than the Airport Commuter. It’s small enough that if I wanted to carry it on a plane I could, but large enough that I can fit all of my gear inside very easily.
Creative Canvas Shop – Custom Duffle Bag
The 2nd bag is the one that holds my bigger and/or less fragile equipment. I custom ordered this 55-inch bag from Creative Canvas Shop because I travel on subways a lot and I needed a bag that could fit my backdrops and some other equipment.
Camera and Lenses:
Nikon d750 (x2)
You can’t be a photographer without a camera. I’ve been a Nikon guy since day 1 (nothing against canon though!), and in my spare time I’m a concert photographer, so excellent low light capabilities are a must for me, which is why I have a Nikon d750. I always carry two because I believe in being prepared for equipment failure (which luckily has never happened to me).
Sigma 85mm f/1.4
All of my pet photography is done with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4. The shallow depth of filled is an integral part of my style. The 85mm focal length is excellent for portraits because it doesn’t distort the facial features. That being said sometimes it is too long for NYC apartments (I shoot on-location in clients’ homes), which is why I also carry the…
Tamron 24-70 f/2.8
Luckily I haven’t shot in an apartment that doesn’t have enough space, but I carry the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 so that if I need to go wider than 85mm I have that capability. There are few things more unprofessional than showing up to a shoot and not being able to handle whatever situation you’re put in, so I bring whatever I think I may need.
Backdrops and Lighting:
Savage Universal Seamless Paper Backdrops
I usually carry at least 2 backdrops with me. I’ve found that if I carry the Blue Jean Paper and Plum Paper backdrops that between the 2 of those at least one will be a perfect fit for the animal I’m photographing. This is because dogs aren’t blue or plum colored, so both backdrops will typically contrast quite nicely with the animal. I also have a few other colors in my arsenal that I use either to meet client needs (if they know that they’re going to hang a photo in a specific room and they need a specific color to look good there, I want to be able to accommodate) or for if I’m photographing a different type of animal that I think might look better on another color.
Savage Universal 700 Watt LED Studio Light Kit
Savage Universal was amazing enough to send me their new 700 Watt LED Studio Light Kit. This setup is amazing! It came with two 350 watt dimmable LED studio lights, two umbrella sockets & 9’ power cords, two 33” translucent reflector umbrellas, two 6’ light stands, two removable blue/orange domes, a remote control, and a carry bag to put it all in.
Up until they sent me this setup to test out I had only ever used flash, but now I’m absolutely hooked on continuous light. These lights also have the bonus of coming with a remote control that allows you to dim or raise the lighting without moving. They are also very bright and provide me with more than enough light to illuminate my subjects and the backdrop.
Accessories:
RAVPower AC Portable Charger (x3)
These are basically portable outlets. The Savage Universal 700 Watt LED Studio Light Kit requires outlets to power on, but since I shoot on-location I’m never sure if I’ll be near an outlet until I get there, so I carry 3 of these to power the lights.
Bessey Steel Spring Clamp (x2) and generic duct tape
Now we’re getting into the smaller items. I carry two steel clamps and a roll of duct tape to make sure that my backdrop stays in the position that I put it in. When you’re photographing animals you never know what’s going to happen, and the last thing I want to worry about is my backdrop.
Extra SD cards (x8) and Extra batteries (x4)
As I mentioned earlier, I like to over prepare. I carry extra SD cards and batteries just in case of any equipment failure or I forget to charge the batteries in my camera.
Square Card Reader
Part of running a business is having people pay me. This card reader makes that really easy. It’s very small, and the app is very easy to use.
Scissors
Photographing animals is unpredictable. It’s impossible to know what’s going to happen. To that end, the reason I use seamless paper instead of a fabric or some other option is because animals sometimes have accidents, and they often shed. So when I’m done with the photo shoot I will simply cut off the paper that I used and throw it away.
Squeaky toy
This may be one of the most useful items in my bag, as well as one of the cheapest. I bought a Lamb Chop dog toy and cut out the part that makes the squeaky noise. When I make the noise but the dog I’m photographing doesn’t know where the noise is coming from it confuses them and often will lead to a cute head tilt or their ears perking up.

Finn
Finn is a 7 month old Westie mix from New Hampshire. Finn was adopted by his mom, Jamie,  from Canine Commitment and it was love at first sight.  I asked Jamie about Finn and she said "His mom was rescued in Georgia and came to NH before having his litter. From the first time I saw his picture on the adoption agencies website, I was in love! I went and met him and I knew he was coming home with me. He is super lovable with amazing energy and a great demeanor. He also has those ears!!! He is the best dog, with so much personality. He loves to play with his toys and be around his people. He loves peanut butter and squeaky toys. I am so glad we found each other."
Some of Finn's favorite things in the world include food (so much food), squeaky toys, and snuggling with mom before bed.

Kevin
Kevin is a 13 year old Yorkshire Terrier who found her way to NYC via a breeder in Ireland. She was originally named Muffin, but one day was laying in bed one morning with her mom, Alex, who decided that Kevin suited her better, although she also goes by Kfed. I asked Alex about to describe Kevin to me before our shoot and she said "I believe Kevin has saved my life. She knows if something is wrong and will come and comfort me. She is such a loving creature. I don't know what I would do without her. Lovely love of my life. She loves to do her yoga several times daily. She does downward dog pose and after that stretches out by extending each of her back legs. She also likes to wake me up by digging at the bedding so l lift it up so she can snuggle against me under the blankets as well.".
Some of Kevin's other favorite things in the world include eating bananas and relaxing in bed, which she has turned into a nest with all of her favorite things in it.
