I think we sometimes forget that Dutch was just as much a father to Tilly as he was to John and Arthur. He saved her when she was a teenager. She had just murdered her former gang leaders cousin because he kept trying to sleep with her and she had fled to her mothers old work place (she was a slave) and found out she was dead. She was alone, hunted by her old gang and a kid, but then Dutch comes along, picks her up, not only gives her a loving family including the two teenage boys, Hosea and Susan but also teaches her many many needed skills. No she never fought with them but both her and Hosea likes dominos and probably played a lot and yet we never talk about how it affected her seeing her whole family fall apart and know she could do nothing.

Something I love about the saying "you always have a choice" is how double edged it is. Because yes, it can mean the choice between good and bad honor... but it is also Dutch's "I chose to leave my son" because even though he says "I had no choice" we all know that there always is a choice... he just didn’t chose Arthur and John.

This is where they capture Marston and plan to lure the Van Der Linde Gang to their demise. Dutch actually comes to rescue John and Arthur is furious. Cause he wonders why Dutch left him for dead. Colm will taunt Arthur that John will always be Dutch's Golden Boy. Someone make a fanfic please. 😭

I feel like theres way too little conversation about this page in Arthur’s journal.

Not only did he lose a friend that was ‘like a brother’ to him. Not only did he SEE him die. But the image of his corpse was so engraved in his head that he had the ability to almost draw out a complete replica days later.

Whoever said Arthur hates Sean has clearly never played the game, because someone who hates a man wouldn’t mourn his death.

The way he wrote about him broke my heart and this sketch added on two whole pages was somehow even worse.

This entire thing is giving "I can't love you anymore" because Javier in truth never fell out of love with John and John being "i can't love you any more" because he knows if he allowed himself to love javier he would never be able to save Abigail and Jack. He knew that his love for Javier would be the end of Abigail and Jack and since Javier had not chosen John why should John choose Javier? He shut his love out because he needed to to be able to save his wife and child.

jovier feels so fucked up when you think of red dead one. its like. for javier its like - john was never his all the way was he? not ever. he had a boy and a wife and javier listened to him while he drank and bitched about her. and he loved him that whole time more than likely. john loved him back like a secret. javier back then was so used to being shrouded he let it happen. it contributed to his sense of loneliness. his isolation, ingrained so deep into his psyche. and it makes you wonder why javier stayed back. if it was loyalty to dutch or if it was knowing there'd never be any real place for him with john. or any of them, really. you start to wonder if javier flees back to his homeland and tries to forget about it all. he goes back on his ideals much like he's given up on all of it.

and that's the thing too, when they meet again. john goes back on his ideals because he has a family to protect. if it means working with the law, instead of against them - then thats fine. but javier goes against his ideals for what exactly? and then its like. how bitter. how bitter that must feel, must have felt to see john and know deep down why he was there and feeling that immense sense of loneliness in his capture. javier asks john to let him go, and john does not. javier uses the word brother where another word should be. you don't have the heart to kill me. and please don't let me die like this. in some way they feel like confessionals.

the ghosts of hope and love long discarded. we loved each other once long ago. you made this of me. and i blamed you, and i still blame you for all of it. you wonder what john felt. both choices, to kill javier or to not - you imagine they're both forms of mercy. die by my hand because i loved you. die at the rope because i can't bring myself to kill you. in all cases my love will bury you a second time.
