American Instructors Wounded in China Park Stabbing: US College

Four American exchange teachers from Iowa—among them the sibling of a state House representative—were wounded in a stabbing incident in northeastern China on Monday, their college says. Cornell College, a small liberal arts institute in Mount Vernon, told CBS News that the instructors were injured in “a serious incident” while visiting a park in the city of Jilin on June 10, a public holiday in China. Iowa state Rep. Adam Zabner told CBS and Reuters that his brother, David, was one of the victims, all of whom reportedly survived the alleged attack. Social media footage and posts about the incident were being removed by censors on Weibo, China’s largest social networking site, on Tuesday local time, with Chinese authorities yet to officially confirm or comment on a motive. It remained unclear whether a suspect had been identified or detained. The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. This is the developing story and will be updated. Uncommon Knowledge Newsweek is committed to challenging conventional wisdom and finding connections in the search for common ground. 6-year-old girl killed by badminton racket while vacationing with family in Maine
Lucy Morgan, of Stockholm, New Jersey, suffered a brain injury. A 6-year-old girl died days after she was accidentally injured by a badminton racket while on vacation with her family in Maine, police said. Lucy Morgan, of Stockholm, New Jersey, was playing with her older brother outside a home in Limerick on June 1 when the incident occurred, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety. “Investigators learned that the aluminum shaft of a badminton racquet had become dislodged from the wooden handle, causing the shaft to strike the girl in the head, piercing through her skull,” the Maine Department of Public Safety said in a press release. Lucy Morgan is seen in an undated photo. Jesse Morgan Lucy was sitting on the sideline when the “freak accident” occurred, her father, Jesse Morgan, a pastor at Green Pond Bible Chapel in Newfoundland, New Jersey, said in a blog post following the incident. The racket broke on a downward swing and the sharp piece caused a catastrophic brain injury, he said. First responders brought Lucy to a hospital in Sanford before transporting her via helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she died from her injuries on Wednesday, police said. “There is so much more to say, scripture to unravel, people to thank, and tears to be cried,” Jesse Morgan said on his blog, urging people to “hug your kids more.” “We never asked for this immense trial, but the reports of other children coming to Christ, about neighbors having gospel conversations, and grief being shared helps us continue to walk by faith in this profound pain.” Lucy’s memorial service is scheduled to be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. and livestreamed at greenpondbible.org. “Our hearts are broken,” Green Pond Bible Chapel lead pastor Ryan Boys said in a letter to the church community on Wednesday. “Today we are caught in between two immutable truths. Lucy is experiencing ineffable joy with the Lord; we are experiencing unspeakable grief and sorrow.” Source link via The Novum Times

Aircraft Carrying Malawis Vice President Is Missing
A search is underway for a missing aircraft carrying the vice president of the southeastern African country of Malawi and nine other people, the country’s government said on Monday. Vice President Saulos Chilima was traveling on a Malawi Defense Force aircraft that took off at 9:17 a.m. Monday from the capital, Lilongwe. But it missed a scheduled landing at an airport in the north of the country, less than an hour’s flight away. The aircraft disappeared from radar and aviation authorities have been unable to establish contact with it. The vice president was on his way to attend the funeral of the country’s former attorney general, Ralph Kasambara. But severe weather in Mzuzu, the flight’s destination, prevented the plane from landing, said Lucky Sikwese, an aide in the vice president’s office. “The Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed that it has not landed at any of the airports,” he said. Authorities have not located a potential crash site. As darkness fell, military and police officers continued the search by vehicle and on foot, but struggled to comb through the thick forests in Malawi’s north, local media reported. Malawi’s President, Lazarus Chakwera, deployed a search and rescue operation that included both national and regional agencies, the government said in a statement. Mr. Chakwera also canceled a scheduled trip to the Bahamas, the statement said. Mr. Chilima, 51, was a telecommunications executive before entering Malawi’s political scene a decade ago. In late 2022 he became embroiled in a corruption scandal and was arrested by the country’s Anti-Corruption Bureau over accusations that he received kickbacks from a businessman in exchange for government contracts. Mr. Chilima denied any wrongdoing, but the accusations tarnished a government that had sworn to clean up corruption in what is one of Africa’s poorest countries. Last month, authorities in Malawi abandoned the case and withdrew all charges against Mr. Chilima. Mr. Chilima was expected to launch a bid for the Malawian presidency in the 2025 election. Once political rivals, President Chakwera and Vice President Chilima formed a coalition in 2019 after losing an election marred by irregularities. The two candidates successfully challenged the result, and, after a judicial panel ruled in their favor, the two men won a subsequent second vote that was carried out in 2020 on the same ticket. Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup Marry Have Second Wedding Ceremony Hollywood Life
View gallery Image Credit: Getty Images Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup reclaimed their vows in a wedding ceremony in Mexico City. “I’m making a video ……but tomorrow I’m taking pictures. Family x friends and lotsa fun @naomiwatts x Billy in Mexico City #wedding #benwatts #scrapbooking #familyandfriends,” captioned the 55-year-old actress’ brother, Ben Watts, in an Instagram post where his sister was heard saying, “This is a reminder of what life’s about…The affirmation of love..one of the simplest things but most importance.” The King Kong star first tied the knot with the 55-year-old actor in June 2023 at a courthouse ceremony in New York City. During an interview on Live with Kelly and Mark, Naomi gave insight into her intimate wedding by saying, “Nothing was planned because we wanted to keep it lowkey. I even got my flowers from the bodega at the corner.I wrapped them in old ribbon. I keep my ribbons for a good reason. Pulled them out of the drawer, made it myself. And then yeah, we ended up finishing the whole ceremony — It’s very quick — and we just called a few friends, randomly, or just spontaneously, and whoever was in town just came and joined us. It was really celebratory and lovely.” Getty Images Kelly Ripa chimed in on the wedding bells, admitting that she and Mark Consuelos were happy that the now-married-couple found each other. “Aww thank you. It’s never too late, right? We found each other later than… yeah, late in life. And it’s really a special thing. Billy loves you guys, thank you for your kindness about that,” Naomi voiced. This time around, these lovebirds  celebrated in the tropical land of Mexico City while Ben – a photographer – captured all candid moments on the big day. “Off they go Naomi x Billy x family #benwatts #scrapbooking,” Ben wrote across another video – playing “Love And Marriage” by Frank Sinatra – showcasing the bride and groom inside an elevator waving “goodbye” alongside bridesmaids and groomsmen.  Adding to the Instagram spam, Ben shared more on his Stories, including on the way back from the trip and noted, “On our way home from a absolutely fantastic weekend in Mexico City with family and friends.” Naomi and Billy do not have any children together. However, she shares son Sasha and daughter Kai with Liev Scheiber. Billy welcomed child William Atticus Parker with ex-girlfriend Mary-Louise Parker. The newlyweds have yet to post any snap relating to their wedding in Mexico City. Source link via The Novum Times

Football fans racially abused a player. In landmark convictions theyve been sentenced to jail
Three football fans who racially abused Real Madrid player Vinícius Júnior at a match in Valencia last year have each been sentenced to eight months in prison. The background: La Liga, the Spanish league, said the conviction of the trio over an incident at Valencia’s Mestalla stadium on 21 May 2023 was the first for racist abuse at a football match in Spain. All three were also given two-year stadium bans from any venue hosting La Liga matches, or games held under the jurisdiction of the Spanish football federation (RFEF). The key quote: “Many asked me to ignore it, many others said that my fight was in vain and that I should just ‘play football’. But, as I’ve always said, I’m not a victim of racism. I am a tormentor of racists.” – Vinícius Júnior What else to know: Currently, La Liga can only bring the facts of a case to the relevant legal authorities and is unable to sanction clubs, fans or players for hateful conduct, racism or violent acts. What happens next: LaLiga president Javier Tebas said he demands “that Spanish legislation evolve to give LaLiga sanctioning powers that can speed up the fight against racism”. Mets’ schedule a chance for revival to avoid being deadline sellers
It really shouldn’t be this way. A baseball team shouldn’t dawdle for two-plus months and still have an opportunity to rescue itself so dramatically. Generally speaking, if you play eight games under .500 across the first 64 games of a schedule, that’s a fair indicator of where you are, where you’ll be, what your season is going to look like. And that may well be the case with the 2024 Mets. But…
