I'm sat in the driveway, but I can't go in The green fence is faded and it's sinking in I wish I was younger, so I knew the end I'd move to Orlando and I'd be your friend I tore you apart to put me back again This time zone's a bastard and I'm wearing thin You're still ain't Chicago, the things that I miss I can't have tequila without half a gram
It was alright before I got empty Made a mess of the room in your heart I'm still your boy

Gregory smiled lightly, watching how happy the lab was just to have a new friend to say hello to. Not that it really surprised him. Labs were such friendly dogs, they just wanted to be-friend the entire world. Bono of course was no different, if his little dance said anything about it.
"Ah - sometimes." Gregory admitted with a shrug of his shoulder, leaning against one of the kennels and letting his hand rest on Apollo's head, who had come out and sat right next to his feet, still watching their new friend with curious but reserved eyes. "I mean, they all have personalities. Some of them are more shy than others. Bonnie - she's pretty timid, but she comes around eventually. She just likes to get to know people."
Hence why she wasn't out and about like little Prince up on the cat tracks.
"...If we think they're timid from... things other than personality then, yeah we try to work with them and get them used to it. If we have animals coming from bad backgrounds, we want them to know they're safe and not to be afraid of people. Some of them are just stubborn and shy by nature though. We don't like to force them to change who they are. A uh - a dog we used to have, Yoda. That was one stubborn dog. Kept to himself, didn't really want to deal with people. We tried - but.. that's just his thing. He's very happy now, but still... very stubborn."

Gregory nodded softly, finding it a little endearing how uncertain he seemed about coming to pet some dogs. Part of him wanted to tease - to tell Copper that he was definitely over thinking it, and as long as he could reach his hand out and pet something, he would be fine.
Instead he just felt himself smile as he pushed back from the desk with a shrug. "It's - not that formal." He assured easily. "They just like company more than anything. They uh.. They kind of lead you, honestly..." Gregory explained, gesturing lightly for Copper to follow him as he shifted to lead him into the adoption room.
Normally, the room was full of floor to ceiling cozy kennels and a large open floor space for play and meet and greets. There was a door that led directly out to the back patio and dog park areas, a separate area for small animals - and roaming cat trails marking the walls. Platforms and window bays for them to get up and have their own spaces. All of the animals he'd gotten here had been great with each other regardless of species. The adoption room was always quite harmonious, and it always made him smile to see the cats and dogs come and play together, but still have their own spaces and area to themselves.
Currently - all of the kennel doors were open, yet seemingly the room was quiet. If only because it was a beautiful afternoon out, and the excitable pups were out with the daycare doggies soaking up the sun. As it was though, there were still some more lazy ones that had stuck around. Old man Apollo - the one eyed Shephard poked his head out from his bed, eyeing Copper with a soft thumping of his tail. Bono on the other hand came bounding around the corner, entire body wiggling back and forth with excitement as he ran right up to Copper to do his happy dance in front of him. "...That's Bono. I don't think he knows how to uh... wag his tail properly because he kind of just uhm... does that." Gregory explained, nodding towards the dog's entire body movement. Like a waving flag, really. "...and then the quiet one over there, that's Apollo. He's kind of a resident at this point." Greg said as he closed the door behind them, gesturing lightly to the room. "And there's Prince-" He pointed up to where the little ragdoll kitten was pouncing around the different levels of the cat-house. "...Bonnie's probably hiding but she'll come out. And then the rest of the dogs are out in the yards. You can see them too, 'course."

Gregory had been drying off his hands when Copper approached, his gaze immediately looking the other man over with a small raise of his brow. He wasn't sure what he had been expecting, and that certainly was not the first time that someone had asked that very same question, but admittedly it did take him off guard for just a second.
Truly, it was still a thing. Greg always encouraged people to come in and socialize with the animals still waiting for their forever home. It kept them happy, it helped train them and better prepare them for new smells, people and experiences, and overall it was a good experience for both pet and person. He loved when people came in just to play with the dogs, or sit with the cats, and he had no problem letting them.
Or, well, it depending fully on the person. Gregory had a pretty good grasp of most of the people living in town through the years. He was not very extroverted, of course, but that didn't mean he wasn't a watcher and a listener. Keeping tabs on people, their actions, their words and so forth.
So, if something that Gregory didn't approve of came in asking this same question? Greg would very easily turn them away. Usually for the reason of protection for his animals. He did not need them exposed to bad or harmful people.
This though? This was just Mr. Russel. Personally Greg didn't actually know the guy, but he knew of him. Moved to Swynlake.... sometime? Years? He didn't know for sure - ago, and worked as a paramedic now. That was the sign of a good person, right?
"Oh... Yeah, no - we love that." Gregory assured after a beat, a soft smile on his lips as well. "...They love to have visitors. Even uh-.. even just for a few minutes... Were you uh... Thinking dogs? Cats? Both. Anything cute and cuddly?"

Close was an understatement, really. Gregory and his mother had been inseparable. Right down to the hair-accessory he'd kept on his person at all times until it had somehow been lost. His mother had been his first friend and his best one. There had been very little she didn't know - and now it felt weird knowing that there was two years of his life that she wasn't privy to.
His own fault, of course, he would not deny that.
"...thank you." Gregory said quietly then, managing a glance up at Jun before he sighed softly again. "I uh - ... I'll talk about it with Zero and.. let you know."
Because he didn't want to linger on it either, he just needed to make sure that he was truly ready. That there wouldn't be something else that set them off, that had their fingers returning to the trigger of doubt.

Gregory had his doubts, but that was what he was good at, wasn't it? Having his doubts. He knew that Jun would help him though, just like he knew that yes, Zero would be more than willing to offer assistance however he could as well.
In fact, it had been Zero who was gently prodding about them whenever he could. Never forcing, but giving Greg the opportunity to open the discussion or talk about what had happened, or at the very least, where he wanted it to end up.
"I know." The younger man spoke softly, leaning his elbows forward on his knees with a deep sigh. He had support in them, he knew. Evidently more support than he had from his parents - but he knew that wasn't fair. Not when he'd cut them out just as much. He just wished that they would have respected his wishes in the first place. That maybe he was struggling, yes. Gregory could admit that, but that they needed to recognize that Greg also knew that their option wasn't the way forward for him. It would have only been an incredible step backwards.
He just hoped that... they understood that. That it wasn't something that would forever be a wedge between them, even if they finally did come together again. "...I uh - I'll sleep on it, and..make a choice. I want to fix things... I miss them." He admitted easily. "...it's weird not telling her everything. She was the first one I wanted to tell about Zero.."

Gregory's frown quirked up for just a brief moment as Jun squeezed his shoulder, though it returned a moment later as his gaze shifted back out to the sunrise and the way the breeze blew gently through the trees back beyond the farm. He wanted what Jun said to be true. That there wasn't a timeline on family, and that it would be okay. That things would smooth over, that it would return to normal.
But Gregory was scared. Scared that he would find out that wasn't the case. That there would be a finality to it that he could avoid if he never tried. Perhaps the only benefit of never trying was only that he would never know for sure that it was over - that he would lose his family forever to something so trivial.
His hand shifted up, absently rubbing at his eyes as a deep breath exhaled from his lungs. It wouldn't be easy. It likely wouldn't be fun - and he couldn't just ask Jun to go test the waters for him. He could ask the older man to come with him but even so. He wasn't sure he wanted Jun to be privy to whatever might come from his parent's mouths regarding him.
"...yeah I-... I need to think about it." He said instead of fully committing, because he knew if he gave a solid answer to Jun, that would be it. Jun would follow it through to the end. "...besides, if you show up to talk to them they'd just-... I dunno, think something horrible happened again."

Gregory couldn't help but level his mentor with a flat look. In what world would it have been easy to tell Jun that things had gotten so bad that his parents had turned to that route? Even if realistically - Jun knew. Greg had broken down in his arms in the old shop. He'd cried and told him he couldn't do it any more, that he'd wished that Jun hadn't been there in Town Hall that day.
Of course Jun knew what Gregory was going through, or the thoughts that cycled through his head. Not all of them, but enough that a conversation involving this wouldn't have come as a surprise at all. Yet the shame and embarrassment... - he didn't dare to bring it up. Greg just kept figuring he'd... fix it. He'd figure it out and be able to reconcile.
The biggest issue is, he couldn't dare prove his parents right. Gregory needed to prove that he could do this on his own, in his own, unconventional ways. It just... took time. Time that was proving things were improving. Like Jun said, he was doing well...wasn't he? If not just for Zero and still having the success of Ruff to Fluff but... - for once, Gregory had started gaining weight. Healthy weight. He'd put muscle on his bones, was eating more than once a day, was putting more care and attention into his look and appearance. He smiled more and genuinely.
He still struggled. He still had off days. His anxiety and depression were like a backpack he could never take off, and he'd come to know he would always have it with him, but these days it felt so much less like that backpack was pulling him back and weighing him down. Even the thing that had concerned his mother most he had been clean from now for months.
"...what if it's been too long..?" Gregory asked with a small frown, glancing off towards the goats and trying to hold that cup steady. "..I just wanted to be better before I saw them again, and-.. I do feel better but.. It's been so long. And--... they broke my trust, I probably broke theirs. I just-.. I'm scared that's something we'll never fix."

It was unfair, for the record.
Gregory hadn't been on the offensive for the fight, Gregory hadn't started it. He hadn't even really ended it. He still remembered getting home from work that evening, Tucker hot on his heels as he walked into the house. It hadn't occurred to him until far too late that there was an unnatural stillness that had fallen across the home, at least not until he'd stepped through the foyer and caught his parents out of the corner of his eye the second his hand had reached the banister of the stairs.
They'd been siting at the kitchen table, turned in his direction. Waiting for him. He hadn't the faintest idea he had been walking right into a trap when he'd asked them what was wrong.
The younger man chewed at his lip ring, keeping his gaze on the ripples that shimmered through his tea as his fingers shifted against the ceramic. "...Jun." Gregory sighed softly, his voice quiet. "...they were going to commit me." He explained, his cheeks tinting lightly as he shrugged his shoulders in a mindless sort of movement. He wasn't sure if the older man would understand what he meant - but he hoped he would. Given that Jun had fought so hard and given Gregory so much alternative freedoms when it came to his 'therapy' and mental health. That had never been an option to come from Jun's mouth. You'll come work on my farm. I need you to help replace a fence. Can you come for dinner?
All of this methods had been more hands on. Keeping Gregory busy, or more so keeping his mind busy so that it could not wander. Gregory had expressed to Jun his fears of any sort of professional help. Especially in the form of voluntary, or especially involuntary hospital stays.
There mere idea had him anxious, knee bouncing slightly against the stoop. "...it wasn't... it wasn't about giving me space."

"You shouldn't be encouraging me with those kinds of ideas.." Gregory pointed out easily, but his resolve wasn't steady, not when he was too busy watching Zero's gentle kiss to his knuckles and feeling his lips curl up in too soft of a smile. "..all the more reason for you to get to come to Jun's farm sometime though. Give you a proper idea of what a farm looks like since apparently you don't have a clue." The older man teased.
There were other reasons that should happen too, obviously - but Zero getting to see farm life was another. Meeting the goats, the chickens? They were adorable, and he was sure Zero would love them.
He hummed gently though, shifting slightly to glance back at Zero with that look that clearly said if anyone's hurting those moths, I'll be hurting them.
A valid and serious threat - given Gregory often stood up for animals far more and far more passionately than he did for most humans. "...Hm. Must be exhausting with all those demanding people. So glad I'm not one of them." Gregory pointed out with a look he barely managed to keep serious, though a soft smile still slipped onto his features as his gaze fell back to the TV.
"...are we going to be swamped with moths here in a few weeks time? Gonna have to play the 'don't let the dogs try to eat them' game?"

Yeah, that reaction was expected. Even if it still drew a flinch from him, it wasn't like Gregory couldn't say he wasn't expecting it. Not talking to one's parents was a huge faux pas in Jun's book - and he knew that from the start. That was part of the reason that the older man had managed to drag him all the way back from across Europe. All because he hadn't been keeping his mother informed.
At the time of course, he'd later learned that Aubrey had also gone to Jun in tears, so of course he was going to help.
This situation was... different though.
"...my poor mother hasn't talked to me in over a year either, Mr. Moon." Gregory pointed out weakly, his gaze shifting up to look at him as he shrugged his shoulders lightly. He knew it was a pointless argument. He could have tried. Gregory could have reached out, showed up. He didn't know how though. Not when he was convinced it was on their end too. That they were better off without him. (They were...right?)
"I-... It wasn't supposed to be that long."

Gregory knew it was a risk to breach the topic at all, he knew Jun well enough by now to know that if there was even a slight question, Mr. Moon would likely ask about it. If there was a doubt or worry, he'd get to the bottom of it. In a way, that was what Gregory wanted though. Because he knew he needed to talk about it. Needed to ask about it. Needed... help. At the same time he knew himself too well too though - and knew that he'd never just directly go right to Jun about something like this.
So the indirect route was the best choice for him, and just as suspected; it had worked. Jun immediately latched onto the hesitance and turned it around on him. The only problem was, Gregory still felt that shame well up so terribly hot inside of him that he wished he hadn't brought it up at all.
It was easier to ignore it, wasn't it? To pretend it wasn't even a big deal. So he'd stopped talking to his parents... a lot of kids went through that. It had only been a few months!
....or... well. When had Ruff to Fluff opened? June right? He'd been moved into the flat upstairs by May before then. So... a few couple of months. Or... nearly a year. Except that small pit of dread grew slightly more in his heart as his brows furrowed deeply.
It hadn't been nearly a year.
It was about to be two. Two full years of time that had passed without a word exchanged between himself and his parents. Where he hadn't even caught sight of his mother at all. Opening the shop. Birthdays. Christmases. New Years. Graduations. Falling in love. New Tattoos. New friends. New mistakes, and new dreams. Two years worth - and not a single one shared with one of the most important people in the world to him.
A heavy sigh left Gregory's lips as he kept his gaze firmly focused on the tea he'd still yet to even sip. "...you uh... you know we don't talk anymore.. right." No. Of course he wouldn't. Gregory had never said. "...We uhm... We had gotten into a fight---.... that uh.. that was why I had moved into the shop in the .. the first place."

Gregory leaned into the touch, his eyes closing briefly as Zero gently brushed his hair away from his features, something they tended to fall back into quite often as he'd let his hair grow long these days. He made a small noise of discontent at the suggestion though, his eyes peeking back open as he tucked a little closer into the other man's arms.
"...s'not what m'saying." Gregory pouted lightly. "...Just know it's going to be busy for you soon.. Should probably stop wasting my nights I get with you on the stupid parrot." The older man teased, tilting his head slightly as if he might be able to glance up at Zero from their position, though it wasn't exactly possible. He snaked a hand up to rest on top of Zero's, threading their fingers together easily as he closed his eyes again. "...Especially if the moths'll be out soon." He continued with a small smile playing on his lips.
The moths were a handful. Cute, adorable, fluffy things, but when they first emerged? They were clumsy, curious. Gregory was always so fond of them, and Zero had been sweet enough to show him them at their purest form - and after, when they finally found their balance and got their wings steady, Gregory would find them (and the butterflies) frequenting Ruff to Fluff all too often. Stopping to rest in his hair or to flutter past his cheeks.
"I know how they wrap you around their little hypothetical fingers, after all."
