Robot characters who are given names like SL-308-62 but instead of their human friend going Well let's call you Sally for short, they instead ask the other if they Like their current name.
"Do you like your serial number?" they ask. "Yes, quite. It reminds me of who I am" the robot replies. "I have heard others like me go by different names after some time, and maybe one day I'll choose one for myself, too. But right now that is my full name, yes" they continue.
Because it's not your decision to make whether or not the robot will receive a new name. It should be theirs only. What's the difference? One is more complex and the other is simplified. They were both given by strangers instead of themselves.
"62 will do," they conclude. "It's my model number - there will be no other 62 after me."

"why can't they just be friends" not in the homophobic way but in the "their platonic relationship in the source material is far more dynamic and complex than the sanitized personalities they gain as a result of shipping" way

Saw a sibling poll and needed to expand it because I fit, like. Mid youngest, youngest in theory only child in practice, and adopted. And I think they all have their own unique parts in the sibling ecosystem.

CALIBORN REDEMPTION ARC???
Tumblr media
You have no idea how often I think about that…
Skel and I have discussed so many Earth C scenarios that involve Caliborn time traveling to ruin Calliope’s happy end only to be completely overwhelmed when he sees her as a separate entity for the first time.

You can! I’ve received some positive feedback from various people telling me that they relate to the LLAU!Caliborn for differing reasons. I can only say that welcome this.
Caliborn canonically has the learning difficulties that I’ve also given the LL AU counterpart:

I like to keep this dialogue in mind when conveying his personality through my works, because I think it’s important to remember that he’s aware of his mind ticking differently from the perceived norm.
This didn’t stop Caliborn in the Homestuck canon as we all know, but the far more passive LLAU!Caliborn would display more struggles with accepting this part of himself.

I’m glad you’re liking the AU! It’s still very bare bones, but it makes me so happy to talk about all these little cherub thoughts with you guys… I’m getting spoiled over here with the way I keep getting enabled, aaaa…

I love Calamity, and yet…

CALZONES
I talked to Skel about the cherub father a couple of weeks ago and she proposed the name Caligula for him, and it fits on so many different levels that I’ve completely embraced this headcanon until we get more lore about him… IF we ever get any more lore.
I have some thoughts about the cherub father that I haven’t really brought up on this blog before… mostly because the implications frighten me.

Hey! I'm new here and i wanted to know what's going on with Caliborn and Caliope. Are they like siblings or something?
Hi and welcome to my blog!
Caliborn and Calliope are cherubs, an alien species from the webcomic Homestuck.
Every cherub is born with two souls of opposing alignment, one benevolent and the other malevolent. These two halves take turns controlling the body via sleep cycle - every time one half goes to sleep, the other wakes up.
The cherub will find themselves in a never ending mental warfare with their other half.
During maturation, one of the halves would eventually turn out to be weaker willed than the other, and the dominant half would then consume the weaker one’s soul and take full control over the body.
Caliborn and Calliope are the two halves of the same cherub body.
A cherub is incapable of experiencing love as we know it. Their concept of love is akin to passionate mutual hatred.
This lifelong conflict between the two halves conditions them for the brutal courtship and mating process they will later undergo (as giant space snakes… but let’s not delve into that)
As for whether they’re siblings or not…

Here’s where it gets a little bit more complicated, because both of them have mentioned at least once that they don’t regard each other as siblings.
That, however, didn’t stop them from playfully referring to each other as such.

And then later in the comic they omit the quotations entirely.

I guess the matter is further complicated by Caliborn’s one sided attraction towards Calliope, but I won’t be delving too deeply into that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Calliope does consider Caliborn disgusting for even suggesting that she may have caliginous feelings for him, so whether they’re siblings or “something like siblings”, being attracted to their other half is definitely outside the norm.

Because of the fact they spent 15-16 years chained up, I have this headcanon that Caliborn and Calliope fear being restrained.
Yes yes, absolutely! This also reminds me of some of the musings I’ve had regarding the Caliborn redemption arc AU.
I like to think that Calliope adores lofty architecture - skylights, tall windows framed with potted plants, fairy lights and a predominantly white interior to help the daylight reach every corner of the room.
She’d hate small spaces, especially those that lack windows of any kind. Being restrained would most likely cause her to have a panicked outburst (similarly to when she flipped the whole chessboard with unexpected rage.)
Caliborn on the other hand wouldn’t care much about where he’s at, though I’m sure he gets a certain level of comfort out of being in a dark place surrounded by rusted metal and humming machinery, because he struggles familiarizing himself with new things and it’s easier to stick with what he already know.
Though when it comes to being restrained, he’d probably handle it a lot better than Calliope due to him being… well, Caliborn

Hey, i just wanted to say i really enjoy your cherub content! Im so glad you did the cherub mother thing. I always headcanoned that the parents could be called "calamity" and "calumnia". Keep the good work!
Hey, thank you so much!
I’ve never considered the names of their parents before - in fact I settled with the idea that cherubs don’t actually have names, and that Caliborn and Calliope are the exception to the rule due to their unnatural upbringing influenced by outside sources.
I reasoned that an asocial species would have no need for individual distinction among each other, as they spend almost an entire lifetime without ever meeting another of their kind.
I’m glad that the Skaianet draft has proven me wrong in that regard, but at the same time it also leaves me thirsting for more cherub lore in general.
That said, Calumnia is a gorgeous name for a cherub! I really do wonder if all cherub names start with the Cal prefix, or if it’s the closest that cherubs have to a family name.
After all, cherub lore also includes other wonderful names such as Zillyhoo and Zillywut.

Something I love about your depiction of Calliope is that you let her miss Caliborn. People often miss the ones who were most horrible to them.
Tumblr media
I’m aware that it could easily be mistaken as something akin to stockholm syndrome, but all I’m trying to do is incorporate the behavioral aspects that Aranea has provided in her cherub exposition.
I still find myself drawn to the bittersweet fact that cherubs will grow to miss the half they’ve lost and the conflict they’ve once had.
Tumblr media
It must be especially difficult for Calliope since she has learned so much about the gentle and loving ways of humans and trolls with their friendships, families and moirallegiances. She can’t justify missing someone as horrible as Caliborn.
It’s very important to remember that cherubs experience love exclusively through hatred, and while we know that Calliope is fascinated with the concept of red romance, the natural mating behavior of a cherub calls for conflict with a cherub similar to the half they grew up with.
It’s a cruel and lonely existence, yet entirely natural for their species.
Unfortunately for Calliope, she doesn’t have the insight that we were given through Aranea’s extensive research.

Someone mentioned that they didn’t recognize the excerpt I’ve used in the post of my Calliope painting, so allow me to clarify:
I’ve copied the text from page 5964, although I fixed Aranea’s quirk to make it more legible.
