*puts hands on hollywood exec's shoulders, staring unblinking into their eyes* listen to me. you will never get people who hate musicals to like musicals by making your musical less of a musical. if you hide the fact that your film is a musical in the advertising, you're going to get a lot of low ratings from people who hate musicals and went into your movie not expecting a musical and got one anyway. people who hate musicals will hate them no matter how realistic and diegetic and lowkey you try to make it. they will hate musicals even if you completely excise anything complicated, over the top, silly, or even slightly challenging. they will hate musicals even if you cut half the songs. they will hate musicals even if you cast that a-lister who can't sing worth a damn. stop trying to market to people who hate musicals. they're a lost cause. your audience should be people who love musicals. this half-assed middle ground pisses off both camps. just embrace the fact that your movie is a musical. lean into it. don't try and trick musical haters into coming to your film when you could be marketing to the theater kids. better cringe than a coward.

i desperately want to know about the relationship between tinky & the spankoffski parents. i need to know literally anything about the spankoffski parents, actually. but like… if he wants “the whole set” do you think he’s gonna stop at the brothers? no.

also the only mention of the mother is said in past tense (“mom said [tap] would help me make friends. boy was she wrong!”) so umm entirely possible he already got her

i’m trying to get back into animating and i had a lot of fun with this. this did however take 9 HOURS which is a lot for under two seconds of animation. i think part of this can be attributed to not really knowing what i’m doing and using super inefficient methods for things, live and learn ig.

the place adventure time has in just culture in general is so so funny to be because it's so prevalent whether through just merch with characters on it or designs directly referencing the style/aesthetics and yet most people have not actually seen the show past season 1-5 (including me until like a year ago!) so if you try to explain any post s5 adventure time plot where it basically became a complete different show you sound fucking insane. they don't even know about princess bubblegum's gay cousin chicle. they don't even know about my dear friend fern.

and then, of course, the master himself, brosenthal, playing frankly 80% of the cast, but ESPECIALLY in this one scene. ONE SCENE:

“oh but joey left the scene for some of the quick changes in tto, he can’t do that if the spankoffski bros are supposed are supposed to have a conversation” FINE, the other option: just play two characters at once. which starkid has done before.

I think part of the reason why people find Hey Melissa so uncomfortable is because it has nothing to do with the supernatural. With everything else we've seen in Hatchetfield the horrible, evil things that happen are so connected to the supernatural that we can find comfort in the fact that those things don't actually exist.

But with Hey Melissa... That's just A Woman. She is not influenced by any Eldritch horrors, she's just like that. Most of the time she seems like a normal person, completely indistinguishable from anyone else you talk to each day. She could be any of the people you talk to each day.

Ok, but like, imagine if we got Joey!Ethan in Black Friday. Joey!Ethan has always struck me as more of a nurturing depiction of the character (in part because of the dialouge, but also in part because of Joey's performance I think), so I feel like their dynamic would be really sweet. But then, he dies. That would be devastating enough on its own. But then, imagine how fucking scary the "it's just like california" scene could be if it was THE SAME ACTOR WHO ALSO PLAYS WILEY. It could be so chilling to reinterpret the scene as Wilbur specifically taking control of Ethan. Just imagine that performance. You know Joey would fucking eat that scene and leave no crumbs. Haunting shit.
