A fantastic author who should be supported by anyone who likes to read.
"In the Court of the Nameless Queen" now available in ebook and paperback (wow very cool)
Tumblr media
Hello everyone it is I, award-winning speculative fiction author Natalie H. Ironside, author of The Last Girl Scout and Lead and Roses: Love Songs at the End of the World and as heard on the Tales to Terrify podcast, and I've gone and done did it again. If you like dark fantasy and queer erotica featuring big hot monster women and sword-swinging girls (both cis and normal) who love girls, golly have I got something for you!
Take a trip across the sundered worlds to the Queendom of Corynnod, a dark realm of sorcery and desire, ruled over by she who is Queen, goddess, and mother to us all, in four fantastical and titillating tales of wonder, adventure, love, sex, and—of course—spiders.
Herein you'll find the following four exciting and XXX too-rowdy-for-tv tales:
BROOD: A true and credible account of how Freydis Thorkilsdottir, war witch, became Freydis Gothi and the Mother of Abominations. Freydis Thorkilsdottir, soldier and war witch in the army of the Nameless Queen, has always struggled to find a place for herself as a transgender woman. She volunteers to lead men over the walls in a castle assault, in hopes that, should she survive, she might earn the attentions—and the favors—of her great and terrible araneidan Queen . . .
Chanting prayers to their Queen, they drew a circle of blood around the altar and lit candles, bathing the nighted cathedral in flickering light. As they worked, the Nameless Queen nibbled Freydis’ ear and whispered, “You know what’s about to happen, right?”
“I’ve… heard stories, my Queen.”
“The stories are mostly true.”
Freydis at once gulped in terror and moaned in delirious anticipation.
THE APOSTATE: An account of how Freydis Gothi made the acquaintance of her most beloved and treasured servant. Fleeing oppression and unspeakable abuse, Kristina Kaminski—a woman who loves women in a land where such things are not allowed—travels into the grim and mysterious north and meets a most peculiar woman upon the shores of the sea. As she settles into her new life, it comes to pass that a dark conversion often necessitates a dark baptism . . .
The two women kissed as, overhead, the sounds of revelry upon the knarr’s deck grew louder, more intense. Freydis nibbled Kristina’s lip as she broke off the kiss and said, “I must say that the thought of corrupting a Khethian nun is rather delightful.”
“I put myself here of my own knowing volition, Freydis. I’ve come pre-corrupted.”
TRANSMUTATION: An account of the coming of Steff Pelczynski, diabolist, to Caer Eldur and the court of the Marchioness. Steff is no man, but don’t try telling her that. When the young wizard travels into the north, seeking a change, she—with the help of a rather commanding older woman—finds a change she didn't know she was looking for . . .
“Be whoever I’d like. You know, on that same night, I met the most fascinating woman; a woman who’d been born a man. I’ve not been able to stop thinking about her since.”
The astrologer smirked. “Have you given any thought to why you can’t stop thinking about her?”
“I’m sure I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“You’re a terrible liar, wizard.”
THE CARNIVAL OF CARNAL DELIGHTS: An account of how Freydis Gothi acquired her legendary sword. Freydis Thorkilsdottir, Kristina the Apostate, and their friends take an excursion to a festival of wondrous terrors and delights where nothing is as it seems . . . and things already seemed pretty suggestive to begin with!
They came at last to the Queen’s bedchamber, a wide, circular room of black stone with spiderwebs spun along the walls. Freydis, as she had so many times before, strode through the darkness to the pile of silken purple cushions by the far wall and stood there with her hands clasped behind her back, awaiting orders.
“I would like to know more about what your body is doing,” the Queen said. “Disrobe.”
“As you command, my Queen."

Every single member of Parliament should be made to go on a safeguarding course! There are very valid reasons why a child would NOT want parents to be informed of them being trans, a school being forced to inform the child’s parents could very easily put that child in severe danger, from physical harm to mental harm.
I really hope that, come the 4th of July, the present Government all lose their seats and we have a new Government who actually care for all of the people in this once great country.
[Disclaimer] I work with special needs children and have undergone safeguarding training, if we are informed of something of concern by a child in our care we are first to inform the child’s school safeguarding officer, unless the concern is within the school, then we have to inform not only the child’s parents but also the County safeguarding team. If the concern is both with the family AND the school, we MUST inform the County as soon as possible so as to remove the child from potential harm. My job is to transport special needs children from home to (and home from) school, my current run lasts 2 hours twice a day and means that the driver and I (I’m what’s known as a passenger assistant) are the first people outside of the family that a child sees each day, we know the children we transport well enough that any changes to how they normally act will be noticeable to us which is where our safeguarding training comes in. We are NOT allowed to force a child to tell us if anything is wrong, they have to offer the information themselves and only after we have told them that we would have to let the relevant people know of any concerns.
guys why the fuck aren't we talking about what's happening in the uk right now

so after talking about this with both neurotypical and neurodivergent irls i'm actually curious, as a person who can't mask to save my life:
*While I am mainly seeking answers from other people with autism, answers from people with other neurodiversities that have "noticeable/stereotypical" behavior patterns would also be great!!
I know that there's gonna be a lot of sampling bias here but I think I just wanna hear from others like me. idk i've never run a poll like this before
feel free to elaborate in the tags if you're comfortable <3

Dialogue tips that actually work:
You are not writing a movie (ignore this if you are). The reader doesn't need to know every word the characters say for the duration of the story. Less is more.
Dialogue can happen within the prose. "And they awkwardky discussed the weather for five minutes" is way better than actually writing five pages of dialogue about the weather.
Balance your dialogues. Surprise yourself with a monosyllabic answe to a dialogue that's ten sentences long. Don't be afraid of letting your character use half a page for a reply or nothing at all!
Don't write accents phonetically, use slang and colloquialisms if needed.
Comma before "said" and no caps after "!?" unless it's an action tag. Study dialogue punctuation.
Learn the difference between action tags and dialogue tags. Then, use them interchangeably (or none at all).
Don't be afraid to use said. Use said if characters are just saying things, use another word if not. Simple. There's no need to use fancy synonyms unless absolutely necessary.
Not everyone talks the same way so it makes sense for your characters to use certain words more often than others. Think of someone who says "like" to start every sentence or someone who talks really slow. Be creative.
Use prose to slow down the pace during a conversation.
Skip prose to speed up the pace during a conversation.

Okay, there was a good post about not misusing mental health terms that I didn't want to derail but I do take issue with one of the examples in particular:
Tumblr media
(the example itself is saying "I'm literally about to have a mental breakdown" when you're "only a little upset")
and the thing is, they're not wrong that that kind of hyperbole, when it is hyperbole, is harmful
but on the other hand, people assume that it's hyperbole far more often than it is, especially because if you can articulate that you're about to completely break down and are at 99 percent but masking it, people don't recognize it as the calm before the storm and instead think you're fine
like, my point is just, don't assume people are misusing it. for any reason.
-if their tone is slightly flippant/silly (they may be extremely serious but trying to soften telling people out of anxiety. I know I often punctuate stuff like that with a nervous little giggle, which I HATE, but also can't stop doing
-if you don't see them break down (maybe they had a massive melt down in private and didn't interact with anyone until they were done. I've hurt myself from suppressing breakdowns until I was alone
-if their mental breakdowns look like shutting down instead of lashing out. people are just as fucking judgmental and awful and violent towards a person who is seemingly otherwise normal becoming completely incapable as they are about someone suddenly being loud and angry and self harming, trust me. I've been both
for any reason
I also disagree that using "about to have a mental breakdown" "sets the standard" for how a mental breakdown can look, precisely because mental breakdowns can look like SO many different things. someone NOT having an angry type mental breakdown isn't responsible for conditioning ableists into thinking it's not possible. I know that's not what OP meant, but that's what some people will read out of it, and that's just victim blaming
mental breakdowns can look like sobbing, like shutting down, like self harming, like shouting, like making threats, like laughing uncontrollably, like rocking and whispering to yourself, like covering your ears and curling up in a ball, like repeating only one word over and over again, like... etc
mental breakdown is a broad, general, colloquial term for everything from intense dissociation to autistic shutdowns to BPD splits to PTSD flashbacks to... again, etc
They're not wrong that it's not the same as being a little upset. But many mental illnesses, either inherently or in response to sanism or both, mask their traits right up until someone is in a crisis and sometimes even then. There have been times where I was actively planning to attempt suicide in less than an hour where I seemed like I was "a little uspet" to most people. I have had anxiety attacks without people around me thinking I'm anything more than mildly irritable.
(Granted, I've lost much of the ability to put up that facade over time, so most of this is from the past, but still)
Many mental illnesses are in fact known for this. Just because someone appears to be okay, doesn't mean they're actually just "a little upset".
And again, I'm not saying OP is saying any of this. This is not directed at their thing, but about memories their thing brought up of specifically how other people assume shit, and how that itself can be harmful and ableist. Again, my reason for making a separate post is not to vague them (which I've admittedly been guilty of) but to not derail their post.
Anyway, this goes for all mental health terms.
If someone is lightheartedly talking about extremely difficult symptoms they experience, for example, don't assume they don't actually experience them. Some people deal with their suffering with humor or by facing it and treating it with less deadly seriousness.
If someone talks about experiencing delusions that aren't negative but are still delusions (things like endelity, reality shifting/weird reality stuff related to delusions, posic identity rooted in delusions, etc), don't accuse them of misusing the term.
If someone says they're triggered but don't seem to be outwardly struggling, believe them and don't question them This one in particular is important to me bc often I spend all my energy trying just to hold myself together until I can "safely" fall apart and be vulnerable on my own, and I'm very much Not Fine In A Big Way. Some of my triggers, too, seem like non-issues to most people, and "why are you upset over something so small", is quite literally a phrase I have trauma around especially as a traumatized autistic person with OCD.
(It's not small to me. That's the whole point. To you it's a minor inconvenience but to me it's causing what feels like world-ending distress. Triggers are often irrational but the feelings behind them don't get any easier just bc you're aware of how utterly nonsensical it is to BE this upset by them.)
This post isn't to accuse anyone of doing this (or like we said, to vague anyone). It's literally just to say "hey, while there are some very obvious cases (like OP's examples of the use of the word delusional to mean "thinking about someone having a crush on you", and not in some extreme context like utterly believing that a celebrity that doesn't know you is your spouse/lover, which could actually be a delusion) just... don't assume that someone who appears to be relatively stable is misusing mental health terms.
If you have proof from their usage or other interactions, then it's fine to react accordingly. "Don't assume" doesn't mean "always assume they're using it correctly even when there's hard evidence to the contrary", it literally just means don't assume. It means only using what people are actually saying/doing, and not what you THINK they are feeling, to determine if they are misusing a term. It also means not using their actions to justify jumping to conclusions about their feelings.
Sometimes it's easy to tell. A troll saying "lol I'm triggered" over being called out on their trolling, for example. These blatant examples though are a common occurrence, but there's still plenty of people using terms correctly, in good faith, who get fakeclaimed and "called out" for "misusing terms" because they don't look like a person's biased expectations of what that symptom/illness looks like.
I guess my point really just boils down to "be careful and be kind"

The nazis that you see in movies are as much a historical fantasy as vikings with horned helmets and samurai cutting people in half.
The nazis were not some vague evil that wanted to hurt people for the sake of hurting them. They had specific goals which furthered a far right agenda, and they wanted to do harm to very specific groups, (largely slavs, jews, Romani, queer people, communists/leftists, and disabled people.)
The nazis didn't use soldiers in creepy gas masks as their main imagery that they sold to the german people, they used blond haired blue eyed families. Nor did they stand up on podiums saying that would wage an endless and brutal war, they gave speeches about protecting white Christian society from degenerates just like how conservatives do today.
Nazis weren't atheists or pagans. They were deeply Christian and Christianity was part of their ideology just like it is for modern conservatives. They spoke at lengths about defending their Christian nation from godless leftism. The ones who hated the catholic church hated it for protestant reasons. Nazi occultism was fringe within the party and never expected to become mainstream, and those occultists were still Christian, none of them ever claimed to be Satanists or Asatru.
Nazis were also not queer or disabled. They killed those groups, before they had a chance to kill almost anyone else actually. Despite the amount of disabled nazis or queer/queer coded nazis you'll see in movies and on TV, in reality they were very cishet and very able bodied. There was one high ranking nazi early on who was gay and the other nazis killed him for that. Saying the nazis were gay or disabled makes about as much sense as saying they were Jewish.
The nazis weren't mentally ill. As previously mentioned they hated disabled people, and this unquestionably included anyone neurodivergent. When the surviving nazi war criminals were given psychological tests after the war, they were shown to be some of the most neurotypical people out there.
The nazis weren't socialists. Full stop. They hated socialists. They got elected on hating socialists. They killed socialists. Hating all forms of lefitsm was a big part of their ideology, and especially a big part of how they sold themselves.
The nazis were not the supervillians you see on screen, not because they didn't do horrible things in real life, they most certainly did, but because they weren't that vague apolitical evil that exists for white American action heros to fight. They did horrible things because they had a right wing authoritarian political ideology, an ideology that is fundamentally the same as what most of the modern right wing believes.

There’s no such thing as work-life balance for neurodivergent & chronically ill people.
This is because everything in my life requires work:
maintaining friendships
keeping up with my hygiene
managing bills
making money
remembering my basic needs
sleeping regularly
outputting creatively
All requires some aspect of work for me.
And when everything in your life requires work, your balance goes out the window.
If you're neurodivergent and overwhelmed — I see you.
If you're chronically ill and overwhelmed — I see you.
You're not dysfunctional.
You're not incapable.
You're doing your best.
